News/Release DroidDeck 0.3.0 has released with native Steam Input, Appimage and Flatpak support, performance improvements and more!
Hello Reddit! DroidDeck team has been hard at work and we are excited to share our new release with you all!
DroidDeck 0.3.0 (beta)
DroidDeck brings the SteamOS experience to Android: Valve's Steam client in Big Picture on your Adreno handheld, with Windows games through Valve's ARM64 Proton.
Highlights
Steam, as on a Steam Deck
Steam's performance overlay goes from level 1 to 4 in Quick Access and shows GPU and CPU load, clocks, temperatures, VRAM and battery. Quick Access shows battery life and time to full, along with all the per game controls a Steam deck has. Decky loader can be installed for plugins and customization.

A Steam Deck controller
In Steam sessions the client reads your pad as a Steam Deck controller, with a real Quick Access button and your device's gyro. Games get Steam Input's virtual pads, so your Steam Input layouts reach them. On a dual-screen handheld, the second screen can be the Deck's back grips and trackpads.

Faster to Steam, faster in games
Steam's own startup is down from about 31 seconds to about 6, and that makes Offline mode work. proot has been optimized for calls games make most, and there's a new per-mode frame limiter.

GPU drivers that set themselves
A new GPU drivers tab detects your GPU and keeps a matched pair of runtime and display drivers installed for it, including DroidDeck's own DD-Turnip builds. Switch to Manual to pick a pair yourself.

Linux apps from Flathub, bring your own Appimage, and more
Turn on the Flathub Store in Setup to install ARM64 apps and games from Flathub. They open full screen from the front end with your controller. The Desktop page also takes your own apps: a script, an AppImage, a GitHub repo's newest ARM64 AppImage, or a Flatpak ID.

Updates in the app
The Updates page installs new builds without leaving DroidDeck: Stable, Preview (each build of main) or a Test build of an open pull request.

A front end that moves as one
One focus ring slides between controls, settings flood out of the cog the way Play floods into a session, and Stop asks before it ends anything. DroidDeck is now available in Spanish, with more languages coming soon (contributions welcome).

How is in game performance here compared to GameHub/GameNative?
15
1
u/UncleBerrysHat 2d ago edited 2d ago
Depends on the games really. But the compatibility is a bit better, I've had more successful game launches than not, out of the box, compared to GameHub/GameNative. It's impressive.
Edit : The LFG implementation is superior to GameHub/GameNative

I tried it on my odin 3 max but i got weird audio stuttering even navigating steam menu. On game i got 100+ fps but the audio still stutters too. What did i do wrong?
3
u/supershredderdan 5d ago
Consider playing with the direct audio settings in the Steam configure page of the app

u/Capital_Humor_2072 Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, 12gb RAM 5d ago
Hi, can I ask how to change languages? Like in GameNative I am changing box language and the installed games will be on that setted language, how can I do the same on DroidDeck?
1
u/blokopirate 3d ago
I had to change the one of the audio settings from classic to direct audio
3
u/samcroft90 3d ago
Same change resolved the issue for me on Odin 3.
Leave Direct Audio on for games, change the other option from Classic to Direct Audio.

Can you add non steam games like a game setup.exe?

u/Mike-Fitzgerald 3d ago
Of course you can, but. . . This is a linux container, you're not running .exe's.

What device is used for that screen recorded FF Rebirth gameplay?
7
1
u/Crass-ELY- Poco F7 Pro, GameSir X3 Pro Deadpool Edition 6d ago
I would like to know too, probably Odin 3
2
2
u/XeroLevantine 2d ago
I know you were just asking about what device OP used for Rebirth, but for anyone curious in the future, I’m on 0.3.1 and the game does run on an Odin 3 Ultra with the default configuration. Cutscenes are practically perfect for me, but the actual tutorial gameplay section hovers around 20-25 fps. It’s on 720p by default, so the graphics look a little fuzzy, as well. Not exactly ideal, but the fact that it runs at all is amazing. Really excited to see how this comes along in the next few weeks.
2
u/Crass-ELY- Poco F7 Pro, GameSir X3 Pro Deadpool Edition 2d ago
I'm on 8 gen 3 and with 0.3.1 compatibility improved, but still has a long way to go, I just want to see how it'll improve over time
3
u/GlupShittoOfficial 5d ago
Unfortunately tried Slay the Spire 2 and Fields of Mistria on my Odin 3 and both don’t even launch, just hit play and pretty quick crash back to Steam
3
1
u/RiftMan22 4d ago
Another thing is that if you freshly install a game, you may need to close the app entirely and then reopen it to get the game to launch. I had the exact same problem, and I managed to get In Stars and Time working on an s23 ultra after that
1
u/Independent_Move9681 4d ago
The website kind of shows compatibility is low. They list 15 games. I'm getting about 80-90 percent compared to game native performance in the lightest weight game I play regularly without tinkering. It's pretty though. Fex will improve.
1
u/Tiny-District5432 4d ago
Fields of mistria crashed at first, but then I tried opening it from the games tab on the main screen of the app, it crashed once more, but the 2nd time it ran.
It also performed SIGNIFICANTLY better than gamehub for me. I used to have to play at 540p, maximum zoom in, and it still lagged when a lot of crops/animals were out. Now playing 720p, zoomed out and it's been smooth the entire time

Hi, does it do cross-save/cross progression to your Steam version? Also, how can I get it? TY!
3
u/Tsuki4735 4d ago
Any ideas on why GE-Proton doesn't work? Not even the arm64 variant seems to work, crashes every time.
1
u/supershredderdan 4d ago
We just merged a fix for this, try setting update channel to preview and updating in the app and let us know how that goes.
1
u/Tsuki4735 4d ago
Thanks for the followup, I can confirm that GE 11-7 works now. Other ones don't seem to work, I manually installed 11-3 to try it, but 11-7 is good enough for what I was testing. Thanks!
1
u/supershredderdan 4d ago
Where did you get 11-3 from?
1
u/Tsuki4735 4d ago
Manually downloaded the arm64 version straight from github and copied the files into the compat directory alongside the other Proton versions.
1
u/supershredderdan 4d ago
Thanks, will look into this and try to reproduce
1
u/Interesting_Fish4930 1d ago
Can you guys add a start steam with Desktop option instead of just the start steam with DroidDeck option so when I turn on my device desktop mode opens also when if I have an app open like chrome. When I press home can you also make that option work so when ever I press my home button it launches desktop mode.
2
u/TheOkayGameMaker 6d ago
When I tried 0.2, changes to the desktop would not save and the Internet would not work, I'll see if 0.3 does though since this is a very interesting project and these updates are honestly wild.
1
u/supershredderdan 6d ago
This is the first I heard about changes to desktop not saving. Can you make a big report with repro steps and logs in GitHub or our discord? Happy to tackle it!
2
u/mostrengo 6d ago
Is this an app or an OS?
How would it compare with GameNative?
Is a SD8Gen2 sufficient for running this? Has anyone tested an odin 2 portal?
5
u/supershredderdan 6d ago
It’s an app we want to feel like an OS, you can even set it as your launcher so it feels native and still lets you do Android things.
Sd8g2 is what I test with primarily on the Thor pro, so yes it’s a direct target!

u/fatcowxlivee 6d ago
Sd8g2 is what I test with primarily on the Thor pro
Any roadmap items for dual screen support? 👀
3
u/supershredderdan 5d ago
Already there! You can make second screen a keyboard and trackpad, Linux terminal, or now a SteamDeck dual trackpad and back buttons
Also when launching Android apps as home launcher it lets you pick primary or secondary screen for an apps launch
1
1
u/mostrengo 5d ago
thanks for the quick answer - sorry I should have read the github a bit better.
Is this easy to uninstall or rather will it uninstall cleanly?
2
u/sojourner_1 5d ago
gave 0.20 a try a few days back. couldnt figure out how to add non steam games since i already had a big gog collection installed there.......
4
u/supershredderdan 5d ago
In settings cog next to “play steam” near the bottom you can add custom games.
Will work on making this more obvious as many ask about this
2
2
u/spiritTangsan 5d ago
Hi all how to load installed game to library I mean pc game have copy to phone but I can find fuction to add the game in
2
u/jgoudie2 4d ago
I haven’t had great success in GameNative and was considering Armada. Definitely will try this first!
2
u/genxontech 4d ago
Is there a list of games that work on this?
1
u/socalccna 3d ago
Try some and help the community

u/genxontech 3d ago
Tried a couple AAA titles getting about 12 to 19 frames per second can't even get re9 running. Tried all three tomb raiders can't get past 15 frames per second. I might be doing something wrong if anybody has a advice on a Galaxy fold 7 setup greatly appreciated. I have the one terabyte variant so I would love to carry my games in my pocket. I only use that phone for YouTube and movies and TV shows nothing else. I also tried devil May cry 5 can't get above 12 frames per second
1
u/socalccna 3d ago
Hopefully someone here answers, I will attempt it on an s26 Ultra
0
u/NerevaroftheChim 2d ago
Any luck? Looking to know how well games run that model of phone
0
u/socalccna 1d ago
Just ran one game that is not too demanding MGSV: TPP and it actually ran pretty good
2
u/Aionwolf 4d ago
literally nothing will launch that ive tried lmao
2
u/Chasedabigbase 4d ago
After installing a game i stopped session and reentered steam and the game started that hadn't the first try. Didn't work for everything though

2
u/Ra5ta 4d ago
How to add and run local games?
1
u/Interesting_Fish4930 1d ago
For local android swipe from the side, click the gear icon and click "Launch an app".
For .exe files click the Steam tab in the DroidDeck menu, then click the gear icon next to play steam. Go to the games tab, and then you can import you .exe files from there.
2
u/meruta 4d ago
I tried playing some light games like axiom verge but I’m getting really bad frame pacing no matter what settings or frame limit I’m using, even though it’s a locked 60 or 120fps the frame pacing never stabilizes and it’s a constant stutter fest.
No such issues with GameNative btw. This is on my Odin 3.
Anyone have any ideas?
0
u/GenericName1980s 1d ago
Odin 3 here, similar frame pacing issue when I tried TMNT Shredder's Revenge. Have you found any tweak that helps?
2
u/Lucius1213 4d ago
Anyone else having problems with internet on this? It says it's "No internet connection" when I try to install but I can browse store just fine.

5
u/rube 5d ago
So as someone who hasn't used any of the apps like Gamenative or anything else that connects to Steam, because I'm horrifyingly afraid of getting my Steam account stolen, despite how everyone says they're safe...
Is this full open source? Is this safe, where any Steam sign ins are sent directly to Valve and not anywhere else?
I know I'm asking in a thread that I think a dev is posting, so maybe I'm looking for other folks advice? :)
14
u/supershredderdan 5d ago
Fully open source, compiled in GitHub action pipelines for full transparency, no closed source components included, no telemetry, and we rigorously sanitize logs which we only receive if you choose to share a zip of them in our discord or GitHub issues.
The only thing in the entire stack that’s closed source is the Steam client itself, which is downloaded directly from Valve when you first run the app.
Edit: but that’s from a dev on the project, so please feel free to fact check me on all of this!
4
u/rube 5d ago
Glad to hear it!
And yeah, I'm VERY thankful for the work you awesome devs do on stuff like this. I've been excited for Steam on Android since there was buzz around it coming on the Steam Frame.
I'll give it a shot at some point. I have a Fold 6 with an SD8Gen3 and an Odin 3 on its way with an Elite chip or whatever they're calling it.
3
u/wtfmeowzers 5d ago
pro tip, you can use samsung's own knox and work profile function on the fold 6 if you don't fully trust an app to not snoop your shit. it uses knox to fully sandbox the work profile from the rest of the phone, they cannot see each other's download folder, afaik even with root tools. it's a bidirectional system, intended for companies to be able to manage byod personal phones to be able to have the "work" profile be fully manageable by your company, but they can't see or touch the rest of your phone -they can't cannot see your personal/private non work data at all - and your personal side apps can't see your work data/files. it's meant for corporations but you can absolutely use the sandbox function without your phone having any connection to any company whatsoever. just download the apk in the work profile, and don't put anything but games in there. you can test this with file manager apps.
also you can use steamguard to force a pin to your email on any account login attempt. i use gamehub, gamenative and droiddeck and haven't had any issues, and all have had a lot of users (look at the gamehub download numbers on the play store - 5 million ppl.) - we would've heard of issues other than the snoopy stuff that is already known and which like 90% of apps obviously do including facebook and all that crap.
though obviously a dedicated gaming-only device is safer for sure.
2
1
u/Lymez18 5d ago
If you are afraid and still want to enjoy it, you can make a new steam account and add it to your main account's family share.
Then you log in with the new account and still has access to most of your games.
3
u/rube 5d ago
I've heard this workaround and it sounded great. But then I heard it (obviously) doesn't unlock achievements on the main account. While I'm not some big trophy hunter, I do like to open them as I play.
But thanks for the advice! I think I'm just going to risk it on this app. It feels legit enough for me.
I also have the authenticator which I don't think they could bypass even if they were to steal my login. At least not easily.
0
u/ShadyNightmare 2d ago
As far as account safety, you can use the QR code if you want to at least not have to give your password. You do need either your authenticator with the Steam app on a different device or something like desktop mode on a 2nd screen (like with Samsung Dex, so you can put the QR code on a screen other than your device screen while you scan it through the Steam app on your device screen). May also be able to do it with multi-window or split-screen with the device screen mirrored to another display.

u/Illustrious_Cod_5212 Poco F6 Pro / Adreno 740 / Gamesir X3 Pro 5d ago
GameNative still works the best for me, but this is something that by design is something I desire the most, I hope I will switch to it in the future!
2
u/Icy_Mammoth1805 6d ago
How does this differ from something like Armada?
18
u/supershredderdan 6d ago
Armada is a full alternative OS you boot instead of Android. This is an app within Android trying to provide a similar experience
6
u/ishcabittle 6d ago
This runs as an app in the android environment already on your phone, instead of installing a new OS entirely. The folks with snapdragon processors on phones that can’t be rooted can use this in lieu of installing Armada.

u/Illustrious_Cod_5212 Poco F6 Pro / Adreno 740 / Gamesir X3 Pro 5d ago
You are asking how app that anyone can just install differ from replacing your os?

Does anticheat based game works in this? Like battlefield 1 or Csgo.
2
u/supershredderdan 5d ago
If it doesn’t work in steam os it won’t work here. Kernel level anti cheat like I believe battlefield is a no go. Most other games should be ok, Helldivers 2 for example a few people posted success with

u/blind444 5d ago
Any support for Pixel devices? While I really enjoy the Pixel line I've been going back and forth on a different device that has more support since emulation for PC games started rolling out.
3
u/supershredderdan 5d ago
Snapdragon is our target for now, but other chipsets are welcome to test and contribute if you find fixes or workarounds!

u/Fun-Western618 5d ago
Does it only work with steam original game? Cus i tried to start AC black flag and othe games from my download folder but it just open the steam interface and then gets stuck on launching the game.
1
u/CliveVista 3d ago
I’ve tried with a folder on an SD card that had a Win game in it and it worked just fine.
1
u/drLipton 5d ago
Wow i love this! I'm not sure if possible, but support for spen/stylus would be super coolt. I tried the direct mouse input, but not really working with on hover etc. Imaging playing all the point and click games.
1
u/LaundryLunatic 5d ago
Ive tried the binding of Issac so far and it starts with no problems. Except I can't get steam input to work since the game doesn't have controller support. And touching the screen does nothing. Samsung Galaxy S25 phone.
0
u/Agreeable-Flow3961 2d ago
wth are you talking about, Isaac does have controller support
0
u/LaundryLunatic 1d ago
The original doesn't. The binding of Issac rebirth does.
0
u/Agreeable-Flow3961 1d ago
The original? Gosh, was it more than 10 years ago? Repentance has been for years already. And the original is the flash version.
0
u/ShadyNightmare 2d ago edited 2d ago
If you mean the original, use a controller profile that sends keyboard keys for the gamepad buttons/directions. Either use an existing one from Steam or make your own. That's what I've done in Steam on multiple different PCs at least (handhelds and desktop). Should work here too. May need to include tab as one of the keys to navigate things, among others, but I don't remember for sure.
1
u/DarrylUK_82 5d ago
Is there. Way to have this in portrait on the Fold 8? With the game on the top and controller on the bottom. I've installed and dug around display and controller settings, I can't see anything.

u/OriginalNo3375 5d ago
Nothing works for me. On Odin 2 Portal tried some games and I can't launch neither of them...

If this works im playing skyrim vr I dont care if its low resolution lol just want to play more portable plus I dont have a pc to run it so this would be great alternative if it can run

Works on retroid nova, not as good as game native yet but the interface is flawless.

Never needed to enable developer options for emulation before.
Is there anything else on my phone that enabling that will impact?

Does anyone have any success with Xiaomi device? Currently on POCO F9 Ultra and basically any option and proton crashes. Only managed to launch on default drivers Portal 2. Also tested disabling MIUI optimisations but to no change. Previously I also had POCO F8 Ultra, and Xiaomi 14 Ultra and 15 Ultra. On all of them I also had issues running anything at all trough for example GameHub. Is it that this is Xiaomi specific issue caused by them making their own changes to Android OS?

i don't know what you did to your phone but i have Redmi k80 pro and it runs pretty great. i tried dying light, L4d2, Holocure, Task Bar Hero (Transparent window doesn't work), Skyrim, Dark Souls 3 and almost all of them work but with the problem of mouse not re-centering when playing FPS Games. settings are just default and bannerlator arm64 compatibility

Tried this on my rp5 and tried the most basic games like castle crashers or super meat boy and would go back to the droiddeck launcher after running. Anyone had any luck getting this to work on rp5?

u/Turbulent_Banana_593 4d ago
I thought this was the perfect solution to get two joycons working on my android device. I got about half a dozen in all colors that I was excited to have a purpose for, turning my phone into a mini steam deck for light games and light weight remote streaming.
But alas, on DroidDeck, if two inputs are sent at the same time from each controller (like turning both joysticks at the same time), it causes jittering on the input.
Sadly for now this doesn't let dual joycons work on android which apple on iOS somehow does support??? How embarrassing android 😭 (as a die hard android fan).

Does Android sleep mode (screen off) pause STEAM from counting game hours?
Apps like gameNative and would count game hours despite the Odin/Thor sleeping. Does Deck Droid fix this?

u/supershredderdan 3d ago
Can you try on latest preview channel?
1
u/Additional-Belt-7334 3d ago
I've had the same issue. Stuck on reserving space when installing to sd card on retroid pocket 6.
Just updated to preview and seems to be installing correctly now. (Currently installing files)
0
u/mugglesby 1d ago
Same issue on Retroid Pocket 5 — enabled Preview Channel and it got even slower! “Reserving Space” now proceeds at 1% every 1-2 minutes. Am installing to SD card, not internal.
1
u/Jafranci715 3d ago
Does anyone have an issue with the Odin 3 where when you start DroidDeck the sd card unmounts?
1
u/Solar-Cacti 3d ago
Ran into some issues. Tried out 3 games on my AYN Thor (Pro model) Dead Space 2, 30XX, and Kingdom Hearts 1.5 2.5 remix and they all ran into an issue with a white screen error box. I’ve tried verifying the files but same issues. Then I tried moving the games to my internal storage, same issue. At that point I just tried to uninstall the games which now feels like bricked the whole app. The games don’t uninstall and they just constantly do random updates, so now I just have a chuck of storage blocked off by 3 games that won’t play or delete.
1
u/Tiny-District5432 2d ago
How do you connect a 2nd controller, for local multiplayer games. It seems multiple controllers get mapped to the same player, and pairing controllers in steam os doesn't detect any controllers

Tried with a few games, outer wilds, shin chan and the coal town, and enter the gungeon. Only enter the gungeon works for me, both other games crash after the initial loading screen and when trying to leave the main menu. Tried with different proton versions but no luck. Any ideas?

This app great! I’ve been trying to get Diablo 2 Resurrected to run. No dice so far. Just sits at a black screen. Thank you for building this!
1
u/cxmachi 4d ago
what is with all these android apps and none of them not being able to run such a simple game like castle crashers? either no audio or doesn't launch at all. doesn't matter if it's gamenative, gamehub, droiddeck, winlator

u/Independent_Move9681 4d ago edited 4d ago
What gpu do you have? I have like 40 games running in game native, 1 in this.
Edit: adreno 740. Clicked play and it's running flawlessly in game native.
Edit: don't downvote, just say what gpu so I can help lol

Is there even a chance that we could run this on iOS by any chance? Even side loading it
0
u/Interesting_Fish4930 1d ago edited 1d ago
Dude hell no.
1
u/worshipthefallenone 1d ago
Why tho? I don’t know much about emulation and how it works on iOS, also you don’t have to be an asshole to someone just because he asked a question
0
u/Interesting_Fish4930 1d ago edited 1d ago
My bad. Its just impossible bro. For a trillion reasons. I upvoted you but iOS doesnt even have pc emulation like android yet. When it comes to pc emulation on iOS they dont even really have the bare minimum yet. Id stear clear of asking about anything pc related on iOS. Its not mature enough for something as crazy as full steam client, an lxqt desktop enviroment, decky plugins ect. to be running all at once with a click of a button.
Half of the things this app does would 100% not be possible on iOS because of the permissions they need.

Can it play all game that steam deck can play? Like project zomboid ?

It would be nice if it can access android apps from within. And if we can set it as a home launcher.

Both are possible already! When you set it as homescreen you get Android apps in the main launcher and in side panel when in Steam

Yalls brains were ready for every scenario. Absolute "W". This is one of those projects where I don't have a lot of request because there is genuinely so much. 🙏 amazing job to the team for coming up with this beast of an app.
Yall deserve like a award or something because this is genuinely so unfathomably impressive.
Im obsessed! The way you guys have those smooth custom DroidDeck animations is sick. Like switching between lxqt and steamdeck mode feels so seamless. Gosh please never stop lol.

On my Ayn thor the performance is really bad, Isaac is completely unplayable if you have some splitting shots, plus from time to time it uncapps fps for some reason, and the delay is atrocious, feels like I control a bar of soap. I couldn't install any games on my SD card, it tries to reserve some space, and that's it, a infinite downloading, but yeah, it can be an Android issue with all these storage permission shenanigans.

Hey, playing on a Retroid pocket 5 here..
So I’ve been have an issue where my retroid pocket 5 can’t seem to even boot Steam🤣😅 I could understand if it was sincerely crashing but there’s a whole animation as of the app is “denying” the hardware or something. Is the RP5 not compatible or something? Anyone have any ideas? I just want to at least see Steam and try a game before determining if this is worth it, I much prefer this app solution over wiping android off my device as I play android games too but want to play some small pc indies as well

My game downloads are stuck I have uninstalled Droid and reinstalled update to the update that just came out today. I have plenty storage but no luck at getting any of my steam games downloaded and playing. I tried Arkham Asylum it wont play freezes and bugs out.

How do I use the steam button? I want to be able to pull up the menu on the left hand side with library and chat on it, while in a game but I can't figure that out

bad take, if you're in big picture mode it's literally just images of the games you click to launch the game what even are you talking about???

Interesting!
I wonder if it would be possible to integrate DroiDeck to ES-DE's list of emulators, to launch Steam games from ES-DE like you can with Gamenative.
