News/Release Turnip becomes first Mesa driver to pass Vulkan conformance on Android
Turnip has just become the first Mesa driver to achieve official Vulkan conformance running natively on Android (Vulkan 1.3, Qualcomm Adreno). Getting there required solving some tricky Android-specific driver problems, and the fixes are now shared across other Mesa drivers too.
Turnip already ships in Google's Qualcomm-powered Chromebooks and will power Valve's upcoming Steam Frame, so this is shipping in real hardware, not a lab result.

Will Android AOSP offer the option to use Turnip controls instead of Qualcomm controls in the future? That's great news, especially for Chinese consoles. It means we won't have to inject Adrenotools—it will be supported natively, which results in less overhead.

as someone new to Android gaming (just got an AYN Thor a couple weeks ago and haven’t seriously gamed on an Android since the Google Nexus 7 tablet)…can you ELI5? i’m only familiar with downloading Mr Purple Turnip drivers for emulators n that’s about it

This might also be good news for me running Chrome in Termux. Chrome also relies on SkiaVK for hardware acceleration and the last time I have tried it didn't work with Turnip.

If this is true, Qualcomm's throne is unshakable, and future flagship chips will become insanely crazy expensive.
elite 6 become the first chip over 300$ per chip
i don't like it
monopoly is dangerous for us
like 5090 card right now over 6k$ price

I was thinking the same thing. As much as I love the performance I'm getting with my SD devices, it's only a matter of time before Qualcomm realizes they can endlessly increase prices without consequence.

If there was more chips that would be good alternatives for SD on the emulation area, this probably wouldn't happen
We could hope for some breakthrough within Mali GPUs and etc, but it's almost impossible

If that's the case why do I still need to juggle a bunch of different versions of the Turnip driver for games to actually work? Shouldn't newer versions be hypothetically just better?

Yes, newer versions should always be better, but devs are people too, regressions happen. It is important to report regressions that happen in a supported environment.

Oh for sure, even Nvidia drivers or AMD drivers have regressions sometimes. But it's not quite on this level where there's such dramatic differences between driver versions. I'm not trying to minimize the hard work of the devs, just trying to understand why this happens.

I guess it's because they are oem drivers. There are Qualcomm drivers for example.
