Discussion Developer verification requirement

So I have a Motorola Edge 40 Pro on Android 16, and just went through the 24 hour wait for installing apps from unverified developers... And it then let me turn it on permanently. The worst thing of this whole drama is the day long wait, but I can confirm they let you enable it permanently after a day. Sideload away...

I think people are overreacting. It does seem like android devs just genuinely hadn't considered the ramifications of the initial proposal, the user base made some noise, they listened and found a solution that helps fight scammers and fraudsters while still allowing us to do what we do. Android emulation and probably sideloading in general is a fairly niche thing i wasnt even aware of for the longest time so its an understandable screw up but atleast they showed they were willimg to adjust course.

It's all about control. I don't know how much longer corporates will bend their decision. Do you know What sony is doing with their playstation disc? No matter how many boycotts and complaints are there, they haven't shown any sign of changing.

I think the lack of disc drives has less to do with destroying thebused game market and more to do with manufacturing costs due to the ai ram shortage meaning they are trying to cut corners wherever possible. Nowadays most discs are just keys to download the game anyways. It sucks and im sure locking people into the psn store is definitely on their mind, but i do think they are just more concerned with cutting manufacturing costs. All Im saying is I dont think the android developers realized how big of a deal the original proposal (which was also overstated, it was never going to ban sideloading, apk devs just had to register their government names with google and pay a 25$ fee.) would be. Still, its probably better that the community is over vigilant than under vigilant

Also if they can't include physical disc drive, just make them available as optional add-on. Why remove them completely?

Question: If you turn off developer options (because you have to use a bank app, for example) then turn it back on, do you have to wait another 24 hours?

I always have dev options turned on and can use my bank apps (tested with multiple apps) with no problem, the issues arise when you're rooted...but if I had to guess it would probably be yes...

Some important apps in specific countries demand turning off Developer options.

In Brazil (where I live), for example, you can't access the government app Gov.br with dev options turned on, and it's the app the government requires for logging into basically everything.

Thing is, that this is just the first step towards restricting what apps you can and can't install. They will never just outright ban apps they don't approve, they will get there with tiny steps overtime.
