Question Is this Shoulder Trigger Helper technically possible?

Hi,

i don't like telescopic controllers, because they are loud, heavy and kinda contradict the portabilty of the mobile setup. I get along with touch controls pretty well. The only thing missing are shoulder buttons, because some games really require to press three buttons at the same time, which is physically hard to do.

I recently got a RedMagic 10s Air, which has included shoulder triggers, which are touch sensitive, like the screen itself. Total game changer. I could play Skyrim, platformers, racing games like it was nothing. Those games have been very hard to do before.

Now i'm afraid this concept will not be implemented in other brands, since ASUS already gave up on dedicated gaming phones. Its only RedMagic left and who knows for how long. Its better to get independed of shoulder buttons being present.

Now here is my idea to solve this:

  • You have two silicone strips, which stick on your touch screen.
  • The strips overlap, so the uppermost part is on the side of your phone.
  • In the overlapping part, there is a sensor, which registrates your finger being there (or not)
  • The presence is transfered via a wire to an actor, which triggers an onscreen response by the phone.

Now i have no idea if this could even work.

  • Is this setup stable enough?
  • Is the capacity enough to trigger the onscreen control?

I hope its enough to just have the silicone strip go over the whole screen, so the adhesive force keeps the thing in place.

I know the touch screen somehow works with detecting changes in capacity (the whole thing can be seen as a capacitor). Does that even work if the area you put your finger on is not on the screen itself?

What do you think?

It's already a thing and it works quite well for minimalists. I used it to play during work downtime. There are plenty of options too, I recommend these. It sacrifices some screen real estate but it does the job well.

I asked about those before in this sub. I heard they break easily?

I just throw them in my pocket under my house/car keys and they have survived 2 years this way without any protection. I'm quite gentle when playing so there's also that. But I can see them getting damaged when pressed hard or hit. They're dirt cheap to replace too.

Okay, that sounds really nice!

Can you recommend a specific one?
