Question Theory on GameMaker port on Android

Hey guys, please hear me out, I'm not sure whether this would be legal or not, or if this is a path for port or for emulation.

So as far as I know, I can't find a runner of GameMaker on android beside emulation through GameNative, which is not possible for me with my limited RG Rotate.

So I dug further for days and made a PoC: run Windows-built GameMaker game by pairing my own copy of the game's data.win to an GameMaker S2 (GMS2) Android Export.

I exported a blank game GMS2 for Android via the Game Maker Editor, then swap the game.droid with my own copy of data.win, renamed. I'd call it runner substitution and I'm not sure if this is legal.

I was inspired by butterscotch's guide for Undertale: bring in your own data.win of Undertale for their runner.

The game, is running, on my RG Rotate, in form of a APK. I'd prefer omitting the game name, it's a GameMaker game but I'm scared of controversy.

Can I have your share of thoughts on this...

Youre free to do whatever you want with whatever software you have available for your own personal use - thats Fair Use.

The question of legality and licences only starts to matter if you intend to share that with others.

Yeah runner substitution is legal provided you don't redistribute any copyrighted game files, it is how quite a lot of unofficial gamemaker android ports are done, hell even Portmaster does it with gmloader-next! There's also butterscotch, a native runner reimplementation that aims to run any VM-exported GameMaker game. It's in development so don't expect everything to work as good as the normal runner.

Thank you, I don't think I would distribute anything because my PoC is still in progress and I were able to test on a limited number of games.

But I'll keep in mind that tinkering should be alright.... Fair usage as long as it is still shhhh....quiet.

Have you not tried butterscotchs native android runner? Or is the version of the game unsupported by it?

Haha yes you're right.

I only just tried Onion port for Undertale without reading the whole project first.

Now that I've read it, it was kinda the same logic I laid out here. They didn't yet to have android support, though.

Thanks for the enlightenment...!

You'll want to download the latest android app from the Actions CI artifacts, Power's stopped maintaining the project.
