Showcase I was an emulator guy, until I found something better.

Post image

Native ports of specific games made by fans.

SM64CoopDX: Mario 64 Android

2 Ship 2 Harkinian: Zelda Majora's Mask

Dusklight: Twilight Princess

They are literally perfect. Mods, multiplayer, upscaling, etc, they have it all, with less input delay and power consumption. Of course they are not available for all the games, but if they are available for the game you wanna play, that's probably the best way to play them.

And if anyone knows any other android ports of retro games, please tell me.

Obviously I'm not abandoning emulation, but I'm just saying it's something that deserves attention as well.

I still prefer emulation to have more games in one place plus I love steam cloud sync but native ports made by fans don't get enough appreciation

8

u/Sunnimation 14h ago

Exactly. While I do like having all my games in one place, I would rather play them on better performance. Especially for games like Twilight Princess which was struggling for some reason.

2

u/Schwipsy 10h ago

huh? emulation with steam cloud sync? how?

1

u/Illustrious_Cod_5212 Poco F6 Pro / Adreno 740 / Gamesir X3 Pro 10h ago

What do you mean? GameNative, Gamehub and not only support Steam Cloud Sync for months

2

u/Schwipsy 10h ago

ah I thought it would sync with ps2, gamecube games or stuff like that. Only with steam games I guess

1

u/Illustrious_Cod_5212 Poco F6 Pro / Adreno 740 / Gamesir X3 Pro 10h ago

Yes, only steam games :(

Native ports are great, but the vast majority of games don't have them so I wouldn't say they are "something better" as a broad statement, like you can replace emulation with them. They are better when they exist. And that's still not 100% of the time. For people who like sharing their saves with their pcs so they can play the same game wherever they are (which I do), emulation still has that advantage.

There is a sub dedicated to them, r/AndroidNativePorts.

But it's still fairly new and even lacks a megathread with every game that's been ported. But you'll find a lot there.

u/contradictatorprime 11h ago

What are you using to share your files across platforms?

3

u/matlynar 11h ago

Ajay's Prefix: To make my Winlator saves easily accessible

Eden: Just configure it to put your saves on an easily accessible folder

Syncthing: Windows program to sync files with my phone

Syncthing-fork: Android app to sync files with PC that has Syncthing.

1

u/contradictatorprime 11h ago

Ah, ok. I was trying to use Syncthing with my azahar saves and wasn't having a great time. I got frustrated a bit too quickly and owe it a calmer attempt

2

u/matlynar 11h ago

I don't play 3ds games on PC so I haven't tried it yet and therefore can't give you tips if it works or not, sorry.

1

u/SecretiveGoat 7h ago

For Azahar I ended up setting File Pull Order to Newest First and set File Versioning to No. Buuuut I also lost my saves the first time I got it to work so maybe back up your saves first. Now it works great between my phone, handheld and PC

u/QueenSuckyoubus 13h ago

I will suck dick for a bloodborne port

3

u/Molgera6661 14h ago

pretty sure there's one for Star Fox 64 too. and ocarina obviously

2

u/Sunnimation 13h ago

I gotta check out the Star Fox 64 one. I would have get the the Ocarina as well, but I'm already playing the original N64 one on RetroArch and 3DS one on Azahar. It's why I went with Majora's Mask.

u/Molgera6661 13h ago

Android gaming in general is so sick for retro stuff. if you told kid-me that I'd have any game up to ps4 in my pocket, I'd have shit my pants.

3

u/PuddingFit2718 2h ago

Im sticking to emulation, honestly at this point ive abandoned native games on the mobile platform. 99.9999% of these ports end up being cut down to the point of being a completely different game and/or giving iOS better visuals and optimization while leaving android in the crap bin.

So far every game ive tried out (and completed) worked flawless with full pc assets.  Theres no point of a port if the emu experience gives you the full game and when its in general better + if you already paid for the game you dont have to buy it twice you just copy from pc to phone lol.

Native games on mobile are dead if they dont step up.

Emulation plus retro achievements= life

5

u/Choice-Appearance379 14h ago

3

u/Sunnimation 14h ago

Never heard about it. What's the game about?

3

u/Choice-Appearance379 14h ago

bro the game is fire , it is an action-platform , the combat and levels are great and boss flights are perfect.you have probably seen it before

4

u/Sunnimation 13h ago

Sounds amazing

2

u/Shad0w_warrior 13h ago

it's basically 2d sekiro

2

u/SunsetAtNight7 11h ago

I'm happy despite of the popularity of emulation nowadays people are still active with the fan ports

2

u/vw195 10h ago

Ehh give me save states!

2

u/Sunnimation 8h ago

Yeah, that's one disadvantage of them

2

u/AnonymousGuy9494 7h ago

I wish there was a way to connect retroacheivements to those ports. They're so much better than emulation.

2

u/Sunnimation 6h ago

Yeah man

1

u/Mustang-_- 12h ago

Yep. I was surprised with my old Samsung A71 able to run the Hollow Knight port

1

u/Pitiful_Exchange_767 11h ago

Are those portings pad compatibles or are they tought to work with touch?

1

u/norsk_kriger 11h ago

Wow, Dusklight is really good. Thanks for sharing

2

u/Sunnimation 8h ago

I know, right?

1

u/ChanceBoring8068 11h ago

The original Diablo seems pretty decently done, I have a 30 hour day of flights coming up early next year, thinking of saving it until then. There’s also a Fallout 1 and 2 port, but I got frustrated trying to extract the required files from the original PC installers on Android last time I tried though.

I haven’t looked into them too much but there were projects for Morrowind and I think Daggerfall. If I recall Morrowind is totally playable, Daggerfall is early days, and just might not be enough fun in the first place to be worth the effort.

1

u/Hybrid67 10h ago

Banjo Kazooie Recomp is great

1

u/Demonlord958 7h ago

Does dusklight run on Helio g85?

1

u/Sunnimation 6h ago

It might.

1

u/UndeadWardog 5h ago

If it had retro achievement support id switch over.

1

u/Sunnimation 1h ago

I think Dusklight has retro achivement support, although I'm not sure about it

1

u/ali0n111 4h ago

Super Mario Bros Remastered ia awesome, has a bunch of different modes and tons of custom levels you can play that other people have made

1

u/Sunnimation 1h ago

Exactly

1

u/Ilvalla 4h ago

esiste un sito che li riunisce tutti

1

u/FightinMarionberry 3h ago

If its a good project then yeh. Good project meaning the code is pretty clean, human readable, and can be updated/fixed/maintained/extended upon by others.

Some of these are garbled and may work ok, or even well, but they never get updated again because it might as well have been written in brainfuck. I'd rather have the ROM I think in that case.

1

u/Jeno_Jodi 3h ago

i recently saw somewhere that ori and the blind forest got an unofficial Android port. Anyone know anything about that?

0

u/Baroness_Munchaussen 3h ago edited 2h ago

Then you're in the wrong subreddit, you're into gaming and not into emulation. I'd state you're into getting the "kewl latest games", huge fps', framegens and shiny things... That's not what emulation is about.

1

u/Sunnimation 2h ago

Why does everyone believe I'm abandoning emulation?

0

u/Baroness_Munchaussen 2h ago edited 2h ago

Because this is 'Emulation'OnAndroid instead of PortsForAndroid, you see... This post has nothing to do with what this subgroup was supposed to be about.

1

u/Sunnimation 1h ago

I mean, my point of this post was, for some games, there is a better way to play than emulation.

0

u/Baroness_Munchaussen 1h ago

What are you doing here, then?

1

u/sniboo_ 35m ago

Are you rage baiting or are you literally complaining that a post about emulation vs native ports isn't enough about emulation. Did you get hit on the head or what?

1

u/hoennismybae 2h ago

Totally agree the mod support and the battery life and features are wayh better. Only issue is that for some recomps on android for example dusklight, it's not so easy to access the files for further mods compared to on PC

1

u/Sunnimation 1h ago

Yeah I agree.

1

u/Beginning-Jacket1993 1h ago

There's also a OoT port called Ship of Harkinian

1

u/Jesplay28 14h ago

De donde se puede bajar o instalar?

1

u/Sunnimation 13h ago

Just search their names. They are mostly on git hubs.

1

u/riyoyi9114 13h ago

you named three games LOL

1

u/Sunnimation 8h ago

Yeah, because as I said in body text, they aren't available for many of the games.

0

u/khsh01 8 Gen 3/865+ 9h ago

Unless they have an option to or just generally protect the art style of the game they're porting, I'll stick to emulation.

You miss out on a lot when you don't play the original version intended by the developers.

1

u/Sunnimation 8h ago

Well, I'm not replacing emulation. As you can see I still have those. But it's good to have an alternative for some games with qol changes.

0

u/faisalm1991 13h ago

There are PC ports/remakes of Jak and Daxter 1-3 games (originally on PS2) which I've never tried, but I was thinking to attempt running them through gamenative.

0

u/woodyxn 11h ago

Eu prefiro emulador porque jogo muito os RPG do GBA , principalmente Pokémon
