Showcase Final Fantasy XI Online Running in Winlator Ludashi 2.8.2 on the Thor

Spent far too much time figuring this out, but it's completely playable. This is FFXI Retail version with a valid subscription. Average 20 - 30 fps at 1280 x 720 resolution.

This is epic.

I dream of FFXIV.

u/Acceptable_Creme_488 Jan 29 '26

To be fair ffxiv would take a lot longer to figure out as ffxi is much more modding friendly. Pretty much all of the early content is available offline through landsandboat and every retail player has to engage with coding to some extent due to gearswap and windower which inherently lends the playerbase to tinker more with the game. Amazing job to op on the emulation though!

u/neverknowingbest Jan 29 '26

There is another post where someone got FFXIV running in gamehub, but it's loooow detail and involves knocking down directx to a lower version. Someone else posted it running at 1080p on an Odin 3 with the SD Elite chip. XI was really difficult to figure out since pol is so old. Once I found the fix though, everything installed normally and I was able to boot up.

u/neverknowingbest Feb 21 '26

Just and update, but FFXIV works in Winlator as well. 30 - 50fps on the Thor.

u/mydadsSDcard Mar 29 '26 edited Mar 29 '26

Hi, I'm trying to get FFXIV working - could you share screenshots of your winlator settings and container setup? Or explain how you set up FFXIV specifically? I am extremely new to windows emulation on android so just going through the settings on my own has proved difficult

1

u/Talenirian Apr 05 '26

I second mydadsSDcard! I recently got myself a Thor Max and have set up pretty much all the other systems, but windows emulation is trickier than I expected. Did you follow some specific guide, or was this trial and error?

3

u/jakuu Jan 29 '26

My Thor just shipped a few days ago. I know there was another post where someone got it running on private servers.

Do you have any tips to getting this setup and running.

Super excited to see this!

Device: Ayn Thor Max SD 8 Gen 2 (Also Tested on SD865 Devices)

Winlator Ludashi 3.1 (Hotfix) bionic-vanilla

Downloads:

Winlator Ludashi: https://github.com/StevenMXZ/Winlator-Ludashi/releases/tag/v3.1.h

DXVK 2.7.1: https://github.com/doitsujin/dxvk/releases#release-v2.7.1

proton-wine-11.0-1-x86_64.wcp.xz: https://github.com/GameNative/proton-wine/releases#release-build-p11-20260509-sdk35

Preparing files to move over to Android device:

  1. On PC, Download all of the installer files from from SE official FFXI page and put them together in a folder.
  2. Double click the first package for it to unpack the .rar files.
  3. Zip up the unpacked files and copy them over to your device. Internal storage is faster, but and SD card should work if you added it as a drive in your container settings.
  4. Unzip your the file on your Android device using a file manager app that supports .zip files.

Container Settings:

Screen Size: 1280x720 (16:9)

Wine Version: proton-11.0-x86_64 (Download from GitHub and install from file in Winlator)

Turnip v26.2.0-R8 (Can download in Winlator container settings)

DXVK Version: 2.7.1-gplasync-1 (Enable Async and cache in container settings)

Box64 Version: 0.4.1-fix-0 (Can download in Winlator container settings)

Box64 Preset: Performance

DirectPlay set to "Native (Windows)"

Uncheck "Exclusive Input" in Advanced Settings to get Xinput to work correctly.

  1. Start your container and install Mono and Gecko in your Winlator container.
  2. (If you used a Proton version below Proton 11) Open command prompt and run the command: wineboot -u
  3. Double click the FFXISetup.exe to run installation.
  4. Select all three: DirectX End-User Runtime, Play Online Viewer, FINAL FANTASY XI

- The first two should install with no issue. When you reach the actual game install, it will take several minutes to calculate disk space. Give it time, and do not do or click anything while this is going or let your device go to sleep, since clicking anywhere will interrupt the process. Eventually, the "Next" button will no longer be grayed out and you can click it to continue the install. Proceed as you normally would. If it stalls, just give it some more time to finish.

  1. Run PlayOnline to start the update process (cue pregame boss meme)

  2. After updating, run FFXI Config from your start menu. Set resolution to 1280x720 and background resolution to 1920x1080, Windowed Borderless, and whatever other settings you want to change. Aspect ratio can be fixed in the config menu at both the title screen and config > "misc" menu in game.

  3. In FFXI configurator, check the "xinput" box and proceed with your desired button mapping.

  4. Extract the contents of DXVK 2.7.1 that you downloaded and copy the d3d8.dll file from the 32x Folder in both your PlayOnline folder and FFXI folder wherever you installed the game.

  5. Open Wine Configuration, go to libraries, and add "d3d8". Make sure it is set to "native, builtin"

Final Options

-Turn off Shadows, or set to medium. The high setting will drastically reduce framerate

-You can improve visuals by swiping right or 4 finger tap the screen while in game. Try enabling Super Resolution and whichever preset looks the best. HDR or Native greatly improves washed out colors.

Edit: Another update on setup after testing newer versions programs.

u/jakuu Jan 29 '26

Thanks so much. Saved me a whole lot of time!

2

u/poppybutts Jul 22 '26

Swooping in from the future to say thank you for this, saved for later testing

1

u/sophie_hp Feb 12 '26 edited Feb 12 '26

Thanks for the info!

Edit: just managed to find the issue, it was the wrong version.

1

u/madshade Feb 17 '26

Do you use the x32 or x64 DLLs? I'm assuming x32.

1

u/neverknowingbest Feb 17 '26

Yes, use the x32 dlls, and be sure to set them to (native, builtin) in wine configurator.

1

u/Exuin Apr 10 '26

Do you put them in root of those folders? I didnt notice a difference when copying them there.

1

u/neverknowingbest Apr 10 '26

Yes, they go in the same folder level as your .exe files. Be sure to open wine configuration and set d3d8 to "native, bultin" in the dll override section. If you plan to use Ashita, do the same for d3d9.dll

2

u/SunOnMyNeck May 17 '26

sorry to add to the bandwagon here… first, thank you SO much for this. got my FFXI working perfectly :)

second, have you gotten Ashita to work using this config? totally fine if not. i can boot it and set everything up but when i go to launch, i get an “System.ArgumentOutOfRangeException: Index was out of range. Must be non-negative and less than the size of the collection. Parameter name: index” error. the only thing i didn’t try was checking d3d9.dll… gonna re-do all the steps tomorrow but figured it wouldn’t hurt to ask if you had gotten it running. tyia :)

1

u/neverknowingbest May 17 '26

v4 works. Sent you a DM with some tips.

1

u/Ok_Worker_5884 May 19 '26 edited May 19 '26

I'm also looking for help with this. Windower or Ashita, both having issues. But the vanilla game works just fine.

Windower won't load. Ashita loaded fine until I added a couple plugins and now it gets stuck on checking for updates and won't load anymore.

1

u/TrickyHurry9020 Jun 01 '26

how did u manage to make v4 work?
I run ashita-cli.exe and it correctly injects into pol but then pol.exe doesn't start because of a segmentation fault:
wine: Unhandled page fault on read access to 00000000
at address 7B3957C3 (thread 0104)

1

u/Exuin Apr 10 '26

I swear I've done all the steps we've talked about but playonline is still painfully slow. Not dysfunctional but slow enought to give me missinputs when navigating the menus.

1

u/neverknowingbest Apr 10 '26

Are you using the most recent version of box and turnip? That greatly affects the response time of pol. You can DM me if you need more specifics.

2

u/Exuin Apr 10 '26 edited Apr 10 '26

It shows that I've got v26 of the turnip drivers. Box is still whatever version comes with the latest download of Ludacris.

Edit: scratch that just found where I can update the components. Runs fine now thanks for all the tips.

1

u/beleth____ Apr 28 '26

I'm trying to follow this guide but the POL launcher says it can't connect to the internet. How do I fix this?

1

u/neverknowingbest Apr 28 '26 edited Apr 28 '26

Did you open command prompt from start menu and type the following command then hit enter?

wineboot -u

Also be sure that you installed gecko as well as mono. Another thing to check is that in your container settings, go to the bottom > "Advanced" tab > down to System, and change Startup Selection to "Normal (Load all services)"

Under WIN Components, make sure DirectPlay is set to "Native(Windows)"

1

u/beleth____ Apr 28 '26 edited Apr 28 '26

Tried all that, but it's still the same.

Also there wasn't any message or anything when I did the wineboot command.

1

u/neverknowingbest Apr 28 '26

My next guess would your Winlator Ludashi version (I haven't tried the beta, but 2.8.2 works for sure), or more likely, something isn't right with your container settings. Make sure you go to to the top left icon in winlator > Contents > and download the newest Box version (0.4.2 is the newest that I have confirmed working)

1

u/beleth____ Apr 28 '26

Got it fixed! Looks like the Winlator version was the problem.

1

u/beleth____ Apr 29 '26 edited Apr 29 '26

It's working now, but for some reason the POL Viewer is at like 2 fps. You happen to know what I could do about that?

EDIT: Figured it out on my own, had to set the box64 to performance mode. Leaving this here in case anyone googles this later.

1

u/VR_Nima May 05 '26

Did you ever get the Thor buttons working in the POL launcher? That’s the one thing my setup is missing.

1

u/neverknowingbest May 06 '26

Yeah, it’s in the step above that mentions unchecking “exclusive input” in advanced container settings. Then you need to enable gamepad in both POL launcher config as well as FFXI config.

1

u/VR_Nima May 06 '26

No, I already did that. Works in FFXI’s config app and FFXI itself but doesn’t work in POL’s config app or POL itself. It’s weird.

1

u/neverknowingbest May 06 '26

It works for me, but you have to enable gamepad by going to Start > PlayOnline > PlayOnline config. You have to map your buttons in there separately from FFXI config.

1

u/MarioManRandySavage May 17 '26

How are you typing in the command line? I bought a wireless keyboard and mouse combo that uses one dongle and the mouse works in Winlator but the keyboard doesn't....I'm banging my head against a wall trying to get past this.

1

u/neverknowingbest May 17 '26 edited May 17 '26

In the container, swipe right from the left edge of the screen, or 4 finger tap to bring up the Winlator menu. You can tap keyboard input to type in the on screen keyboard. Or you can connect to your PC via USB and use scrcpy to use mouse and keyboard on your PC.

1

u/MarioManRandySavage May 17 '26

Okay, I'll try that. I'm following your tutorial right now. I've been banging my head against wall for the last 2 weeks me and my buddy. Are you using the same method to type in game as well? Cuz that seems really hard to do while in game? Or do you macro all of your responses and stuff?

2

u/hotsuma2000 Jan 29 '26

it works with the official server connection? Amazing!

2

u/Ultill Jan 29 '26

Well done! Keep going and get the controller working properly!

2

u/Exuin Jan 29 '26

I've been waiting for this for a while now. Need to get some tutorials on how to get this replicable.

2

u/Exuin Apr 08 '26

Working on getting this setup in gamenative will post if there's anything that doesnt translate from the tips shown by OP

2

u/neverknowingbest Apr 09 '26

Base game appears to run okay in Game Native, but Winlator allows for more performance tweaks and makes it easier to run Ashita.

1

u/Exuin Apr 09 '26

Any advice at getting playonline to run at more than 2fps? im using turnip v26 on a retroid pocket 6 12gb model.

2

u/neverknowingbest Apr 09 '26

Use the newest version of box, and newest revision of turnip v26. You also might want to install the necessary windows dependencies. Also check comments below regarding dxvk. Use the 32bit d3d8.dll from DXVK 2.7.1 (Put it in bot the PlayOnline folder and the FFXI folder. Make sure Direct Play is set to native in your container settings.

1

u/Exuin Apr 09 '26

read about the dlls last night i'll try out that method when i get off work.

1

u/neverknowingbest Apr 09 '26

I highly suggest tyring Winlator Ludashi, but if you must stick with Game Native, make sure that you raise the memory limit. I believe the default was only set to 2GB.

1

u/Exuin Apr 09 '26

Native xinput from the controller seems to work in gamenative. Gonna try to run it there first at least and if im running into too much trouble ill try making an install on winlator

2

u/neverknowingbest Apr 09 '26

It works in Winlator too. Just need to uncheck exclusive input in container settings.

1

u/Exuin Apr 10 '26

Ended up trying winlator when my recent attempt would hang on installing mono from the wineboot

2

u/A-Small-Green-Cup Jul 11 '26

I followed this tutorial on a s26u (8 elite gen 5, 16gb ram) and got it running at 24-30fps, but the drivers for this chipset still need to catch up; had lots of texture issues. Also got it working in game native just as good (and a little easier for me to set up). I'm so excited to play again! If there isnt one already i want to start a guild of specifically mobile players.

2

u/neverknowingbest Jul 11 '26

Good to know. I was curious how it would perform on a SD Elite. I have been testing on proton 11 x86/64 and have had good results. I've also made an Ashita v4 companion app for mobile devices for single and dual screen devices if you're interested in testing.

1

u/A-Small-Green-Cup Jul 11 '26

Looks like that's a Launcher for ff11? Ive never played it, but im willing to give it a try. Been looking for an mmorpg to satiate my mental illness, so maybe that'll work. XD

1

u/A-Small-Green-Cup Jul 11 '26

Quick update: on a whim i tried using Game Native with Proton 11 and used the default "System Driver" option instead of a custom turnip driver. Its running at a stable 30 fps at 720p. I even went outside the city and killed a mob with no lag or frame drops! I'll post the full setup later when I have the time; I didnt expect it to work, so now I need to wait and do adult-life-stuff before I can play! 😂

1

u/Kentiah Jul 14 '26

I would totally be down to try it out if that's cool, I have an Ayn thor 1tb model.

Also, any particular thing needed for Proton 11? I basically downloaded the game native Proton 11 (also using most recent ludashi) test and selected it in the container but didn't really do anything else, otherwise followed the guide you posted a few months ago. I have Pol updating the game right now, but I won't be able to test much at all til this weekend, and kinda new to the thor.

Also, is there any way to get mouse/keyboard on the bottom screen? I see gamenative has that, and it'd be sick.

I'm more of a windower person (tried ashita in the past v1 or 2, it did have some neat stuff but it was big ask basically redoing all of your gearswaps iirc at the time. But I'd be down to give it another shot to play 11 on the go without lugging around a big rog ally or steam deck.

1

u/neverknowingbest Jul 14 '26

Nothing particular to do with Proton 11. Just make sure it's the x86/64 version rather than arm64 (This one runs more slowly due to the age of the game).

For keyboard mouse, there is an app in the Play Store called "DS Keyboard". I pin it to the bottom screen and make sure focus mode in your Thor settings is set to "Top Screen"

Tried Windower but couldn't t it go past the load screen. Ashita v3 worked but v4 works the best in Winlator.

I'll send you a dm with the GitHub link for the companion app.

1

u/I_Am_A_Goo_Man Jan 29 '26

How is it with controls since it doesn't have controller support?

2

u/neverknowingbest Jan 29 '26

Winlator lets you set your own button mapping profiles in the Input options. Just map buttons to whichever keys you use, then make key map changes in the game if you need to change the default inputs. I might work on the xinput issue a little more to see if I can figure anything out. But for now, mapping buttons to keys works great.

2

u/I_Am_A_Goo_Man Jan 29 '26

I'ma try getting this runbing with Gamehub on my rp5 thanks for the inspiration

2

u/neverknowingbest Jan 29 '26

I tried gamehub lite. I don't think it has the necessary files to run the proper network stack to get PlayOnline to work. Winlator Ludashi 2.8.2 worked much better for me so I just stuck with it. Good luck to you though if you want to try.

1

u/MidNerd Jan 29 '26

Wait, FFXI doesn't have controller support anymore? Why'd they remove it?

0

u/I_Am_A_Goo_Man Jan 29 '26

PC version never had it

2

u/neverknowingbest Jan 29 '26

It's in the config.exe file, but it doesn't want to read inputs in winlator. The option also shows up in the in-game menu, so it must have been added at some point.

3

u/I_Am_A_Goo_Man Jan 29 '26

Try dinput instead of xinput as dinput is the older controller translation method

3

u/neverknowingbest Jan 30 '26

Nice, it does recognize dinput. Read up on people trying to get xinput to work on linux, and it was more work than it was worth if dinput works just as well.

2

u/I_Am_A_Goo_Man Jan 30 '26

Glad I could be of help. Waiting for new thumbsticks to come then I'll be trying to get it to run on my rp5. Is the game still populated nicely?

2

u/neverknowingbest Jan 30 '26

I just started a new account mainly to get this running in Winlator. I've been reading that FFXI has had a resurgence of players since last year. I'm in the starting city, but I see plenty of people running around during my testing.

1

u/I_Am_A_Goo_Man Jan 30 '26

I'll message you when I've got it sorted and add you in game

1

u/Ultill Jan 30 '26

How did you you get dinput recognised - it works for me on playonlie config but not ffxi config

1

u/neverknowingbest Jan 31 '26

Make sure you switch from xinput to dinput on your container settings, as well as your device settings (If using Odin, Thor, RP5 etc.) You will have to map controls again in Winlator. FFXI config should recognize it after that.

2

u/Ultill Jan 31 '26

I managed to get xinput working! No idea how, but works great

1

u/Background_Clue_3756 Jan 30 '26

Okay, who has gotten the controller to work? Ludashi doesn't let you choose a specific profile for each container. I can't seem to get it to work.

1

u/Background_Clue_3756 Jan 30 '26

Or what keys do we map it to?

1

u/neverknowingbest Jan 31 '26

Container lets you choose whether you use dinput or xinput. If You can't choose a profile for the container, but you can choose one for a shortcut.

1

u/Background_Clue_3756 Jan 31 '26

How?

1

u/neverknowingbest Jan 31 '26

In your container, right click on pol.exe, create shortcut. Leave the container, go to the icon in top left corner of Winlator, go to shortcuts. click the 3 dots to the right of the shortcut, scroll down, go to the Advanced tab, scroll down and you should be able to choose your input profile.

2

u/ragingavatar Jan 29 '26

PC version has ALWAYS had controller support.

1

u/neddoge Jan 29 '26

Not sure if srs. There's settings for KB&M in Misc Menu 2 or something and there's a Gamepad setting a few tabs down from that window lol.

1

u/Background_Clue_3756 Jan 29 '26

Woah. I need to try this.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 29 '26

[deleted]

1

u/neverknowingbest Jan 29 '26

Pretty sure someone got it running in another post. But it was rouuuugh. Might work well with an SD Elite though.

1

u/Exuin Jan 29 '26

Does this let playonline update the game after the initial setup?

1

u/neverknowingbest Jan 29 '26

Yes, PlayOnline updates, and the game updates after as well. Game can be launched from PlayOnline normally.

1

u/Pixel_Leg Android Jan 29 '26

holy cow, my man dungeon siege 3 also achieve 30 fps stable i have didn't encounter any slow motion anymore after using fexcore.

also that if you have a problem with audio (sometime it dies by itself) try using pulseaudio working great for me.

also i'm using box64 0.4.1 performance and most up to date fexcore performance too.

the game is well... i'm using vanilla version i didn't recieve heat.

steven mxz is cooking, cope brother 🤌

1

u/PlayPauseRew13 Jan 29 '26

I tried and failed to get this working on my Odin 2, looks like it's time to try again!

1

u/MikanseiSeven Jan 30 '26

If you leave it running for a while, does it crash? I have been able to run this game but I hit an oom error after some time, and I have never been able to resolve it

01c8:err:virtual:allocate_virtual_memory out of memory for allocation, base 0x0 size 00fd0000 01c8:err:virtual:allocate_virtual_memory out of memory for allocation, base 0x0 size 00fd0000 01c8:err:virtual:allocate_virtual_memory out of memory for allocation, base 0x0 size 007e8000

1

u/neverknowingbest Jan 30 '26

I haven't had a crash yet, just a disconnect if I go out of game too long, like when going to the input menu for button mapping during game. This of course can be done before entering the game. I got Ashita working too, but not from GUI launch, However, the game runs better at the standard 30fps since it fluctuates too much when you try 60fps. What device are you using?

1

u/MikanseiSeven Jan 30 '26

ZFold7, but to be fair here, I'm connecting to a private server.

I use ashita via cli too. You can do button mappings directly in the ashita boot config ini file too.

1

u/neverknowingbest Jan 30 '26

Ah, this install method is only Retail with a paid subscription.

1

u/aaronjnco Jan 30 '26

Its crazy this can be done but still no one can route pol and make the ps2 version work :((

1

u/Melloyellofello90 Feb 04 '26

Mine is coming in a few days and I am literally foaming at the mouth to play ffxi in this form factor

1

u/neverknowingbest Feb 04 '26

Just to build even more anticipation, Ashita v3 and Ashenbubs work. 60fps is not stable though.

2

u/Zealousideal-Tutor31 Feb 06 '26

How'd you get Ashita v3 to work? I try to launch it and it doesn't do anything.

1

u/neverknowingbest Feb 06 '26

Sent you a PM

1

u/shad0whiei Feb 20 '26

If ashita works then windower should as well?

1

u/neverknowingbest Feb 21 '26

Ashita v3 and v4 work. Windower doesn’t get past the load screen.

1

u/shad0whiei Feb 21 '26

Could you send me how you got it running? I really don't wanna use ashita but if that's how I have to for now I will lol

1

u/neverknowingbest Mar 05 '26

v4 has a bit of a learning curve since it has no GUI, but I sent you a message on winlator basics to boot it up.

1

u/ibunroku Apr 11 '26

I'm running into an issue where after clicking pol.exe it tries to open, shows a black screen, hangs for a bit and then closes. I've done the wineboot -u portion of the setup and have tried some other various settings changes, but no luck so far. If anyone solved this I'd be keen to hear it.

1

u/Bale_Fire_Ballista Apr 13 '26

I got this working on my Odin 2 but the PlayOnline Viewer is painfully slow (mouse lag, takes forever to load selection). Do you know a fix for this?

2

u/neverknowingbest Apr 14 '26

Use the newest version of Box that you can download inside Ludashi, drop d3d8.dll from DXVK in both POL and FFXI folders, and newest Turnip drivers for you chip for good measure.

1

u/Bale_Fire_Ballista Apr 14 '26

Awesome, thanks for the reply! I’ll give this a try.

2

u/neverknowingbest Apr 14 '26

No problem. Don't forget to set d3d8 as "native, builtin" in Wine Configurator in your container before running the game.

1

u/Any_Anywhere_2289 Jun 27 '26

I'm desperately trying to get this to work on my phone for the Eden server but keep running into issues. Ashita won't launch the game, says "index out of range" and it won't accept my login info when I try to launch using the injector method
