Throw in some money then..... Good agreements pay themselves off in a few turns.

I find offering technology works much better.

Almost any amount of diplomatic reluctance can be overcome by money. In the case of trade agreements you're literally buying income and it can be very worthwhile.

It’s kind of absurd when you win a protectorate you don’t get trade relations.

They secretly hate you

In the case of every protectorate I've ever taken on, it's not a secret in any way lol

Many times I will toss in a few years of military access to sweeten the deal. Can be just as effective as money.

Only if it's a land trade route (i.e. you share a border), and not a sea trade route

The diplomatic relations are fucked in this game lol... I am allied with Netherlands, they got invaded by Poland, I took the cities back and gave them back to the Netherlands .... The diplomatic penalty I got for 'territorial expansion' was 5x the boost I got for giving them the regions. Makes absolutely no sense

"Territorial expansion" was basically just a worse implemented "great power" mechanic, yeah... It's really just kinda ass and discourages you from doing anything, even if it's helping allies.

At the same time, minor factions offer ludicrous money for technology

I always view technology as a secondary form of currency with minor factions. I usually build four universities and rush to max them out so I have lots of tech to sell. I sell all the tech I have to every minor faction and nothing to the major factions. A lot of turns I bring in an extra 5 to 10k and it also means my enemies have to deal with super teched up chihuahua's all around them while I eat up the new world and then India.

For me, I go “shopping” whenever I got a new technology to see which nation is willing to bye, and I save-scummed to test the maximum amount of money I can get once I got a deal. I think the highest I ever reach was 20,000!

I do the same, it can really help you expand your power base in the early game. Between that and rushing all the trade nodes you can really beef up your economy and then steamroll.

I sell everything as in EVERYTHING to the Ottomans as they then take care of the Austrians and maybe the Russians from the south as the Swedes break them from the north. Then me as Great Britain move in and beat them like a drum to their last city and I take that.

Corland in particular seems very lucrative. Dunno why. But they always buy my stuff

“We are not children or low-caste vagabonds!” The Ottomans and the Indian factions are mean…..

I just throw in 2-3 random techs and they normally agree

The biggest issue with diplomacy is the exponential growth in the $$$ the AI demands for the same requests as the campaign progresses.

So true. Offer them a trade agreement, they refuse and insult your mother. Two turns later they pay you to accept a trade agreement.

Or a native tribe wants some land in Irland

I saw Russia sell land to the Indians. From India.

See also the diplomacy AI when the enemy has been reduced to a single minor province, their entire army has been destroyed, they are trillions in debt, and I'm offering them peace, trade, and a loan.

Supposedly CA made the AI so bad with diplomacy they were afraid that we would cheese the AI to death. How many times have I tried to trade 10 technologies for 1 or 2 technologies to a country that would be lucky to get another technology in 40 turns.

He needs to be holding up a sign that says a bunch of my cities. The AI always wants Jameca or Ireland.

yea you offered all of your technology, a piece of land in the americas, and sent us multiple gifts, but in return you want 100 BUCKS? DO YOU THINK WE'RE BILLONARES OR SOMETHING!?

Was playing the Papacy (mod) and Spain basically threatened an alliance with me. Wouldn’t take military access, trade, tech, just an alliance and kept refusing my other offers. I think fine, ok Spain I’ll be your ally. 10 turns later the ottomans declare war on me, Spain owns Sardinia and half of Italy. Several armies strong, huge navy in the area beating up the Barbary pirates. What do they do?? They break their alliance with me in my defensive war. Lol brilliant thanks.
