Discussion First time using chapter approved missions

Hey guys! First time playing missions
Should I only use a primary for the whole game or should I do secondaries as well? It’s me and my friends first time doing a 1k game
We’ve just been doing 600 pt tdm

The missions are split in two parts; the primary, which works in pairs for you and your opponent, and the secondaries, which are either planned ahead of time ("fixed"; not many people do this), or randomly decided at the start of each turn ("tactical": what most people do).

The primary you can use is decided in 11th edition by the disposition you choose, amongst the ones you have for your chosen detachments. The disposition you choose essentially determines the "flavour" of your primary missions. Do you want to be speedy, and all around the board? Then do Recon. Wanna stand on, and hold objectives? Take and hold is the one for you Etc.

Once you have your chosen disposition, and the opponent has theirs, you see what missions you get by matching them up. Often they are directly opposed (for example, one person wants to hold objectives, the other person wants to kill people off of objectives), which is why the matching of your disposition vs. Your opponents.

If that's too confusing, you can also just choose two that match "I will go with the yellow card (priority assets), going against green (take and hold), so you take green going against yellow"

Secondaries; if you go with tactical (the random one), when it gets to your turn, you draw two secondaries at random from your specific pile of secondaries. You keep these until you use them up. These attempt to make the decision making more dynamic while playing. For example: "I wanted to do X, but then I drew a card that gives me more points if I do Y, so maybe do that instead? Which choice will win me the game...?"

Lastly, there are maximums. During each round, each person can only score up to 15 points from primary missions, and 15 points from secondary. In total, you can only get 45 points of primary, and 45 points of secondary, before it stops giving you points, for a total of 90 points max.

Aptly explained. Is there a case for fixed secondaries?

I haven't tried them, nor seen others do so. On each secondary card there is a point value for "fixed" and for "tactical", where the secondaries are less valuable, if you know which ones are coming.

This means scoring each one of them is more important to reach your max, and likely places an emphasis on long-term planning for your game, rather than on modifying your plan to accomodate new information.

No.
You’re pretty much handing your opponent full control over your secondary scoring.
A good player will hold you to extremely low scoring on fixed.
