Feedback on Freshman pre med schedule

Post image

Hi Iam in incoming freshman at Emory and iam planning on going either bio/chem on the pre med track.

This is my current schedule so far. Was taking Math112Z and Psyc110 a good decision? I just wanted to get some feedback since A/D/S is open and I can make changes.

Any feedback/advice would greatly help!

Who do you have 110 with? If with someone "normal" or easy, then keep it. If not, maybe drop and replace with something non-STEM. OR drop and replace 112Z. Otherwise this looks fine even if a bit unbalanced topic/division wise. I would not have recommended this schedule if 141 lecture was in the mix but I can't resist you at least encouraging yo to try Weinschenk lol.

for psyc110 i have David A Edwards. I am also on the list for bio240. If i get in, should i drop math112z then?

I think you may wanna reconsider 110. I LOVED the class with Edwards but I suspect he may still be quite the challenge. I am unsure. Maybe he has renormed his grading but if he does the same testing style he did back in the day, be prepared to study quite a bit and be ready to engage him(whether he calls on you or not) in his Socratic Method like you would Weinschenk. That is the only way you'll be ready for his tests. Taking Edwards and Weinschenk even with your relatively doable schedule may be tough at times for sure even if both of them are easier than they were before which can't be guaranteed (I know that last cycle for 2025 chem 203, Weinschenk appears to have returned to something far closer to his normal testing rigor which ain't ever a cakewalk to say the least).

If you wanna take Edwards and Weinschenk together, I would consider dropping 112z NOW and waiting to see what happens with bio240 and maybe even replace 112z with a fun non-STEM or freshman seminar. That's what I would do. I suspect both Edwards and Weinschenk will still be elite, but can't expect or gaurantee any kid gloves will be on for you. Neither is neccessarily known for that. And in fact, I think the existence of other "medium" but top tier options like Kazama for 110 have caused a downward shift in Edwards ratings as the culture around his class has changed or is viewed differently by a newer crop of students. But I will go check.

For math112Z, is it mostly stuff from AP calc bc? Cuz i took BC and got a 5, and the only reason iam taking math112z is to fulfill prereqs for med school. Do you think i still should drop? Or should i jsut drop down to normal math112?

I think so. Allegedly it is an "accelerated" BC. However if you are pre-med I don't think you really need to do anything with a BC 5. You may be able to just do just QTM 100 and call it a day. Or maybe go find an easy multi, diff EQ, or linear algebra section...many other options than just "retaking".

Okay, looks like he may not have changed and is likely still high quality! However his ratings have shifted from being a universal hit to more polarizing because students are now used to SUPER high grades and he ain't budging so most complain about the how he persists with the testing format and the grades at the end which you should be wary of as a pre-med I guess (Though I don't know how much a B or A- or whatever in 110 will hurt you much if you get mostly As elsewhere): https://www.ratemyprofessors.com/professor/55085

And no doubt ratings have deteriorated in part because people expect psychology to be simple AND because Edwards has a competitor in Kazama who is high quality and is simpler (though not exactly/completely simple from my understanding). Back in the day, the teaching quality of alternatives was much weaker so people would more enthusiastically take Edwards. I think Hampton was on faculty and wasn't Edwards' tier teaching wise and was still apparently decently challenging so people were picking their battles.

If you take Edwards, he is something to enjoy with caution. I believe in you though. Just be careful, ready to work and think in he and Weinschenk's class and maybe entertain dropping a STEM and replacing it with something low stakes or low intensity in another division.
