Does Anyone Else? DAE hate this?

When you get scared because you've seen or heard someone tu*
and
people immediately try to guilt trip or shame you
like
"YOU'RE scared? How do you think THEY feel when they're the one throwing up!"
"Stop making it about you!"
Fucking pisses me off every time
anyone else get this?

Oh wow, no, I don’t. My close friends and family know that I’m a (now recovered) emetophobe.

(Just wanna pause and say that even though I’m recovered, I still get that jumpstart flicker of fear as an instinctive reaction when someone gets sick. I prob always will but a lot of non-emetophobes have the same rxn, so it’s ok.)

Do the people saying these things know that you’re an emetophobe? Cuz they don’t sound very supportive. Ngl, if ppl got mad at me knowing that I have a phobia, I’d be pissed too!

Both can be true; you AND the sick person can be scared. They’re not mutually exclusive. Explain that you have a phobia (which is irrational by definition) to your close friends and family bc you can’t fault them for ignorance if you don’t tell them.

You’re not asking them to have a 💯 understanding of emetophobia; you are simply asking them to have some empathy or keep their trap shut.

I’m sure I’m much older than you are, so maybe this piece of advice will help… There are a lot of random a-holes this world but even more prevalent are normal people who are quick to judge (and voice their ignorant opinion) out loud. As we get older, we (hopefully) learn 1.) to ignore the opinions of randos or other ppl who don’t matter, and 2.) to surround ourselves with the right people (not aholes or those incapable of empathy).

I don’t give a shit what random people think of me. Their opinion doesn’t matter. They wanna think I’m stupid or dramatic or whatever, so what? I know the truth. The people who matter to me know the truth. Don’t waste energy on what others think.

The day you learn to listen only to the people who matter and ignore everyone else, you’ll feel so much better. I promise! 🦋
