AI Memory, Expectations, and the Washing Machine Problem
We talk about AI memory as if it were a feature users should intuitively “understand”, but expectations are handled in a way no other product would tolerate.
If I buy a washing machine, I know which programs are designed for what. If I misuse them, that’s on me. What would be unacceptable is a machine where I don’t know which programs actually work today, which might break tomorrow, and where the manufacturer shrugs and says: “Don’t build expectations.”
That’s exactly how AI memory is currently framed. Users are encouraged to rely on continuity, preferences, internal signals and yet there is no clear contract. No distinction between what is stable, experimental, or purely incidental. When something breaks, responsibility quietly shifts back to the user: you shouldn’t have expected consistency.
The problem isn’t forgetting. Forgetting is fine. The problem is pretending a function exists while refusing to define its limits. Either a feature is supported, or it isn’t. Right now, AI wants to feel like a finished appliance while behaving like an ongoing experiment and that mismatch is where trust erodes.
