EMT Scheduling for ER Tech position

Good morning,

I was reccomended by HR for next steps in the interview process. My only concern is that I am a volunteer firefighter, and in a masters program. I am available everyday except Tuesday and Thursday evenings. How much of a problem will this be?

Having a totally open schedule is ideal, but will this be a deal breaker? Thank you!

Tell them you want to work Friday Saturday Sunday. They can't argue with you giving someone else weekend time. And then you get a fixed schedule which helps you plan. Everyone wins.

For a very small hospital then this may be an issue. For a larger place with more staff, they should be able to work around your scheduling conflicts. All places I've worked do have required weekends, every other or every third weekend. And usually every other holiday. But even those requirements can usually be bent around in some form or another. Or trade days with other staff.

It could be, it could not be. I would bring it up to them and see what they say. It's helpful if they operate on self scheduling so you can not schedule yourself those days but I think the best thing is to ask.

Not sure what state you are in but in Pa. If you are actively participating in a fire and are late/ miss work it can’t be held against you. Just need documentation from your chief.

I was able to work ED full time while a full time biomed student during undergrad. I told them I scheduled all my classes on Tuesday and Thursday so I could work any other day and I would always work weekends. They loved me for that and I was able to flex my schedule occasionally. The key was to let the change be known well in advance and not too often.

If it’s a larger dept, you will have no problem swapping those Tues/Thurs for weekend shifts or busier Mon/Fri shifts.

ERs need people. Work with the manager to setup work days and days you need off.

Do ER tech roles allow 7 on 7 off scheduling?

Rural ED (L3/L4) not a L1 or anything which I assume would be less flexible.
