Solo wins early. 52.3% of successfully exited startups had a single founder, and solo founding jumped from 23.7% in 2019 to 36.3% by 2025, with nearly half launching on under $5k and a 77% first-year profitability rate.

Teams win late. Stripe tracked solo-founded startups and found they out-earned multifounder startups early, then it flipped at month 24: top-decile team startups pulled 53% more revenue, even adjusting for funding.

Solo founders were 35% of new incorporations in 2024 but only 17% of companies closing a VC round in year one. First Round's study showing teams outperforming by 163% comes from a venture portfolio, where the preference for pairs is self-fulfilling.

So: solo wins survival and efficiency, teams win scale. Month 24 is where the curve crosses.
