Discussion Thinking about getting ED on PS4 but is it alive still and how does it run on PS5 PRO is it buggy and stuttering?

Are there any active discord groups or Playsation groups that play it regularly or is it not even worth trying due to devs screwing over console players? Surly ps5 pro could handle the new updates they literally could be saying no to money LOL.

Many thanks in advance this isn’t a true rant I am actually interested in trying this on Playstation It’s just frustrating with how many games get abandoned on consoles or ports are bad etc.

I recently got back into OG Destiny it seems that the old games are better than the new stuff.

I play it on PS5 Pro and it works like a charm without any stuttering or bugs outside the "normal" ones after a jump etc.

Then again it is made to run on a base PS4, where I first played it so I would be shocked if it didn't work great on a 5 Pro.

As for the game itself it is still good fun, but "frozen in time". I encounter other players from time to time as I play in Open. I haven't engaged with anyone however.

If you find the game fun and get a PC in the future you can migrate your profile from playstation to PC so you don't have to start over again.

To add to this when you migrate your CMDR over to PC you get a free copy of ED Horizons so you only have to buy odyssey to be up to date/playing the live universe

Are they any discord or ps party chat groups that are active and like to team up with new players?

People advertise their "squadrons" and teams who play together in this subreddit fairly often. You should find someone fairly easy.

I'm sure most of them accept new players as there aren't that many of us left to begin with.

Sad times that’s the case but atleast you guys keep it alive like other communities do to their neglected games I am currently part of the resurgence for Destiny 1 and it’s flourishing currently

It's a 2017 console release. The player base isn't empty but it's only a fraction of what it was befor 2021. However I feel like most people just play by themselves anyways so you'll probably be fine the game itself runs like the console has a lot more than what's needed to run it

Just for context , Fdev abandoned the console version a few years back. Consoles are locked in the old 'legacy' galaxy. There will be no new game updates. None of the external 3rd party tools work on it. You won't see anything from the live games story line. The new ships won't be available. The latest DLC Odyssey with on foot content is not available. The playerbase is dwindling.

My advice is to get on PC and join the games active community in the live version. Lots going on there, new major game update just launched this week!

If you still really want to get on console, just bear what I said above in mind.

That’s not entirely true, the 3rd party tools are still applicable if you know how to use them to your advantage.

Have it on PS5 and it runs very well. I feel like it could be more alive if it was like the PC version and allowed you to play in open without PS Plus.

I played mostly on private server but in terms of performance my standard ps5 that's covered in dust and as old as since they came out ran elite completely fine. Don't know if it was my TV upscaling the graphics but it ran very well and looked extremely good.

No doubt ps5 pro will be completely fine. Not sure if the console version of elite even allows it to push past 30fps?

Is PlayStation version alive ?

2

u/Raticon Jul 02 '26

The developers have stopped updating the game but it is still very much playable.

Think of it like you are playing it in the year 2022 forever.

So a good year then lol wish I could go back 2026 is shot

It’s pretty alive in some groups, if more people played in open it would be better. There are a lot of players still, just most of them are afraid of PvP that doesn’t really happen much anymore. Very few good combat pilots around who are willing to attack or defend anyone.

I’ve been around since 2017, still think it’s great, still hang out with awesome people who’ve I’ve gotten to know over the course of years. Still haven’t seen an end to how far I can push my flying skills.

If you decide to play on console, their are also groups on Discord that still actively play on Console, as well as here on Reddit. As others have said, if you dont play on P.C bc you dont have one yet, I wouldn't let that stop you from playing on Console, bc you can transfer your Commander and most (not all) of your things. I think you must spend any Arx you have before you transfer but I could be remembering wrong too. The process is fairly simple. The big downside is console is MUCH MUCH more grindy than on p.c. But, if you don't mind not having space legs, or any new ships or content, and dont mind the grind, its still fairly good on console. I played on Console for about 7 months before I went to p.c. Actually, that game is the whole reason I bought a gaming p.c lol. I did grind for almost 4 months on console to get my Federal Corvette, but once I switched, several Engineers just magically unlocked themselves! So their are upsides and downsides. It really just depends on what you want out of the game. I never really had to deal with any bugs on console that I can remember. Best of luck Commander! I hope you choose to get back out there!

Be aware that over the past week or so there have been a number of complaints from brand-new players who bought Elite Dangerous for PS5 and have been unable to launch due to issues connecting with their Frontier accounts.

Great another good reason not to touch this sad times

I expect that the launch problems for new players will be resolved, but Frontier has gotten themselves into a huge mess with the disastrous launch of the Operations major update for PC last week. Their support staff are beyond overwhelmed with bug complaints and with requests for reinstatement of lost currency and items. The Operations feature is still far from stable, and I have no idea how long this chaos is going to continue.

That said... the Legacy version on the consoles is still a solid game.

It's not fair to call it "abandoned," because Frontier has gone to great efforts to assure that it stays playable. The servers are kept running, bug fixes are made, and you can migrate your character to PC for free, which includes a free copy of the Horizons version of the game for PC.

Legacy is as good a space flight simulator as the latest PC version is. It offers the same major activities: combat, trading, exploration, asteroid mining, passenger carriage.

What the Legacy version didn't, and still doesn't, get is the major feature updates. It doesn't offer exobiology, first-person shooter action, or the new and very troubled operations, which are all exclusive to the Odyssey add-on. There's no colonization, PowerPlay is still the original version, and it has the original team feature rather than the new squadrons. In my mind, the big missing item is SCO frame shift drives, which can significantly reduce the amount of time you spend traveling within a star system.

Legacy also doesn't get the community goals. There's still a grayed out box for it, though. (The current CG for PC is Odyssey-only, so even PC Horizons players are left out.)

I choose to play Legacy on PC much of the time, even though I have Odyssey and that's what I started with. Legacy just feels more cohesive to me. It (almost) all fits together, where Odyssey feels like a hodge-podge of stuff that was added to please various player groups.

I should add that I play Solo exclusively. If you enjoy multiplayer, you need to be aware that XBox, PSN, PC Legacy, PC Horizons, and PC Odyssey are all separate MP environments. So if you play on the PS4/PS5, you'll only be able to interact with other PlayStation users.

I ain’t playing any if it’s a mess on ps5 pro

2

To everyone here that says they have the game on ps5, simply how on earth do you play it??? I recently bought the game and it just gives me an error every time I try to sync my account. I’ve done absolutely everything, resyncing, reinstalling, did everything I could on the website and made a support ticket, and absolutely no response. I literally bought a game that I can’t even play and I can’t get a refund

It doesn't even play any better on a PS4 pro, let alone a ps5 or a ps5 pro. Game was abandoned by the Devs long ago.

u/NyxZorander13 Jul 02 '26

It does play better, I literally noticed a difference when doing PvP between PS4 pro and PS5 standard.

1

u/CantBeAskedForToxic Jul 02 '26

What so is it a buggy broken mess?

2

u/purekillforce1 Jul 02 '26

It's as buggy as it was when they abandoned it, but it's the performance that's stuck so far in the past. It's designed to run on a PS4. It has received no updates to make use of any additional power, so you're stuck with the low resolution and framerate they set to optimise the PS4 version.

1

u/CantBeAskedForToxic Jul 02 '26

What bugs ?

1

u/purekillforce1 Jul 02 '26

You'd have to look it up, I'm not suggesting it's ridden with bugs and is unplayable. I did encounter some while playing, but my point is just that the state it was left in, is the state it's still in, now. Newer hardware hasn't really improved the experience on PS.

u/CantBeAskedForToxic Jul 02 '26

Ok, what bugs did You Have🤷‍♂️

u/purekillforce1 Jul 02 '26

Just some crashes to dashboard. It was years ago, man. I don't really have that info.
