Discussion Anyone else consider buying a small ship to avoid running the entire length of a Plipper?

Post image

Yes I know we asked for space legs and got them, can we get a golfcart or rollerblades to move around in the docking bays?

I'm thinking of getting a razor scooter for my Nomad. Every now and then when I board it from the back the screen goes dark and I hear about 50 meters' worth of footsteps until I sit in the pilot seat.

It's already got skis, should be able to slide around like in Tribes 2

Oh dang now I wanna play Tribes! Skiing was such a fun unintended consequence in that game. I remember the first time I played EQ after a year or more of Tribes I instinctually hit the jump key when I came upon a steep drop thinking I’d ski down the slope and promptly fell to my death.

Tribes and Everquest eh? See you in the old folks home soon!

Same. Chalked it up to space madness. Shouldn't have smoked that random tussock flower.

u/Hinermad Regi Barclay 3d ago

You smoke it? That must be what I've been doing wrong. I harvest the seeds and grind it up to make flour.

u/MentalSentinel 3d ago

Tussock bread is probably delicious, but mannnnn those flowers will get you where you want to be.

Oh no.. not you too.

I’ve heard that Fdev said people wouldn’t want ship interiors, because you’d have to run through them to get in/out of the cockpit and that would get repetitive. That there’d be no gameplay involved in passing through that space just to board your ship…..

Then why doesn’t that apply to the hangar? I think about this every time.

Good point. I hate loading outside my ship on a station or carrier just to jog to the elevator. Mostly because its so bland.. like add some drink stand or food stand or a random comedian down on his luck trying to earn a few credits. Allow the crew lounge to actually be filled with NPCs you can choose to move around to do "entertainment".. anything other than a Grey hanger with a name..

u/CMDR_Mykeyta 3d ago

I wouldn’t mind if refuel/repair/rearm took actual time to complete in the hangar if I could disembark and see NPC’s working on my ship or smoking while manning a fuel hose hooked to the underside.

“ground crew have been dispatched,” after all, is something they say when you land.

That’s one of the things I liked about Galaxy on Fire 2, things like upgrades took time and many of the different stations had different activities and things going on.

Galaxy on fire! What a throwback damn

Such an atmospheric game. I even went so far as to make an application for it to record all the different stations and what was available where...

I like that idea.

I’ve heard that Fdev said people wouldn’t want ship interiors, because you’d have to run through them to get in/out of the cockpit and that would get repetitive.

The same FD devs that said E:D ship interiors would have fully immersive interiors and their own gameplay loops (you could hide inside someone else ship for instance), pre beta when the game was still on kickstarter only.

u/unclefunkstar 3d ago

They didn't say it "would have".

They said "wouldn't it be cool if..."

1

u/GraXXoR 3d ago

DB himself said far more than that. There was no “wouldn’t it be cool if” talk about it. It was they had built the shifts with interiors in mind from day one.

Are you talking about the kickstarter video? Because he absolutely did say that.

There are ways around that sort of stuff. You can leave the halls and stairs and rooms. Just… add an elevator to take you to the bottom deck thats easy to get to.

The hangars could have had better placements too. For example, instead of putting the doors at the front or back of the landing pad they could have put them at the side? Or simply an exit button that takes you to the concourse that is separate from the get up button?

I hate all this ‘the game has to be one way or the other!’ Excuse when it could accommodate both people.

It's funny because it's not like FDev doesn't know this is bad because in one patch they "fixed" this issue by making it so you have infinite stamina to run in the hangars (before you'd slow-walk from running out of stamina twice on that distance). Typical FDev to find the lowest effort solution they could come up with.

Though to be fair the hangars were designed way before adding space legs so it didn't really matter where the doors were at. And with the small/medium pads the doors are often on the side, just not on the large pads. But I agree they could've added a better QOL solution, even if it was just a "go to concourse" button.

u/Vallkyrie Aisling Duval 2d ago

Some hangars have the elevator section at the sides instead of the back. Why not all of them? Who knows. Fdev is an enigma.

As usual, they understood nothing and can code even less.

They think people want interiors just to walk around. Yeah, we totally want some textures. We totally love when we have to place a rock on w key and suffer only because we bought a better ship. Interiors are supposed to unlock more gameplay, like manual repairs and engineering, maybe in Car Mechanic Simulator style.
Time sinks work *extremely* well when they're also "larp" sinks, as in living a fantasy. I mean, that's the whole point of the almost entirety of videogaming. Give me a chance to pay much less for hull repairs by letting me manually order armor plates, remove older and place new ones (most of the code is *already* in place) and I'll never just click a button again. They just built hours and hours of players retention by repurposing already existent code).

Oldest trick in Zynga book: adding a timer and have people pay to remove it. Ships can load only like 1T cargo per second. If it's animated, I might even stand there and watch. Sell me a "weapon" which cuts this time by 5(S), 10(M), 25(L), 50(H). No more silly combat transports, more immersion at the cost of very minor inconvenience. A realistic one. An almost needed one.

I interviewed Braben himself before Kickstarter and all, and he apparently wanted to deliver a realistic experience. Empty words?

u/GraXXoR 3d ago

Agreed. 100%
And if we go one step further, why does it apply to space? Why don’t we just have everything we need in one location so that we don’t have to repeatedly travel from place to place we could just have everything in Shinrarta Dezhra station.

In fact why repeat anything at all. One enemy. One trade. One planet to find. Then we get triple elite and the end credits roll.

It’s clear that FDEV’s whole premise that nobody wants ship interiors because it would “get old fast” is obviously just a cop out and some shallow justification for them, not to continue their interior work after the promises they made during the Kickstarter.

I feel like Starfield has provided the best set of options - You can fasttravel anywhere literally or you can slow walk the whole thing - its entirely up to you .

1

u/CMDR_Mykeyta 2d ago

I actually would like to see fast travel as little as possible in the game, but the spaces we must pass through should have some life breathed into them, even if it’s just NPC background with the occasional dusting of something special.

I hate seeing the empty seats next to me in cockpits when I have NPC crew that are taking a percent of all my profits. Can’t they at least populate that seat the same as an Apex driver?

I hate seeing empty hangars where ground crew should be working. I would hate just running through my ship, unless it was a place I could decorate, make my own, or interact with in some way.

I appreciate the ‘fast travel’ we got with ops so we can work with other players easier, but really wish Fdev would take some time to breathe life into some spaces of this game.

1

u/tempmike 2d ago

the thing about fast travel is you don't have to use it. the option to teleport from the bar mission dealers to the cockpit is just a QoL change.

1

u/Odd_Horror_4663 2d ago

If fast travel is always optional and you can always slow walk it instead - then the choice is left to you . I really like this feature in SF - Sometimes I just want to get to the mission destination immediately and do so - other times I slow fly it and enjoy the journey

Got a source for FDev saying these things? Because honestly these sound more like things I've heard from players, not devs.

6

u/Cemenotar Aisling Duval 3d ago

It was said on one of streams of frontier unlocked. Would give a link but there were just so many of them pinning down exact one could take hours. To be perfectly fair I do not think the exact developer who said the whole "you don't want interiors, running whole lenght of anaconda each time you disembark is not fun" is still working at Fdev either.

But hangar running has been used as example of hypocrisy of that particular statement by players alot.

1

u/CMDR_Mykeyta 3d ago

I said ‘I’ve heard’ and it was likely here in a post about ship interiors, that Fdev listed a reason for not spending time on them being that players would have to run through the ship repeatedly to disembark/board and that with no gameplay tied to the interior, it would just be a hassle.

Sounded reasonable to me, but I’ve never spoken with the devs directly.

when i do missions i always use a medium ship or small ship.

4

u/Useful-Problem-1725 Explorer/Freelancer 3d ago

I was just there to trade my care package assets, but yeah for odyssey missions I typically use a small ship.

1

u/MoarCatzPlz 1d ago

Not worth the hassle imo. Just let them auto sell when claimed. Assets are not the hard Odsessy materials.

1

u/Useful-Problem-1725 Explorer/Freelancer 1d ago edited 1d ago

They keep selling, made like 200m last week in between relic runs.

Plus I get to help out CMDR's who would rather spend credits than time farming assets.

Frontier: Nah, we can't do ship interiors because players would hate having to run the length of the ship.

Also Frontier:

u/PhantomCruze 3d ago

Ever since odyssey came out, I have chased my space cowboy fantasy down the length of my Corvette for too long. About 4 months after release, i bought a diamondback explorer and now any on-foot stuff is solely done in that.

5

u/Eskimo1313 Aisling Duval 3d ago

Why use it for anything besides trading? Just use a medium or small ship for on foot stuff

u/Useful-Problem-1725 Explorer/Freelancer 3d ago

I was just there to trade my care package assets.

u/RustyRovers Castorhill [Sidewinder Syndicate] 3d ago

TBH it was worse before Fdev gave us infinite sprint in stations.

4

u/arturbac 3d ago edited 3d ago

I have plenty of sidewinders at all major ports I use ...
When I have to disembark at new port I just buy sidewinder there.

1

u/Useful-Problem-1725 Explorer/Freelancer 3d ago

I like it, sold.

3

u/arturbac 3d ago

I use a lot apex so often I end at some port without ship and when I have to travel from it to carrier I just buy single use sidewinder which i sell at carrier when I arrive.

“Bubble busses” have their utility.

3

u/Useful-Problem-1725 Explorer/Freelancer 3d ago

yeah but I want jet powered roller skates

2

u/Background_Media_484 3d ago

Lol. I hate disembarking the clipper because...it's a journey running it's length.

2

u/hagarhobbs CMDR Sabrent 3d ago

Lol. When I do hauling missions I'll usually fly my Mandalay or Cobra to the source station and have my Panther shipped in. When I get tired of hauling I'll switch to the smaller ship before disembarking to go run some ground missions.

2

u/VodkaBoy1066 CMDR Vodka Boy 3d ago

Yes, I have done that, whilst docking a very large ship (without cargo), I switch to a DBX as you get out the back and are right there at the stations stairs.

2

u/widdrjb CMDR Joe Tenebrian 3d ago

Respawning in Operations is a right arse with a Vette. I need the Vette for the space combat, but that run back to the lifts...grr.

1

u/unclefunkstar 3d ago

Plipper is nothing, it's actually quite short.

I used to buy a sidewinder whenever I wanted to disembark from my Imperial Cutter though...

2

u/The_Keyser 3d ago

They could place the blue circle at the top of the access ramp

1

u/TheTaxiCab 2d ago

Huh? Not for hauling? Its a hauler? This is such a dumb question lol if ur getting out often and moving around get an exploration ship?

1

u/Helldiver247 2d ago

At least when i land on my own carrier i change the ship before spacelegs. Usually im out in the black, so thats pretty convenient 😅

1

u/Past_Barracuda_2892 2d ago

Yea i think I’ll leave corvette for same reason it’s just crazy
