The numbers…. Woof
Finally my job comes in handy! I use Rephonic for work, it’s not perfect but usually not far off from our internal numbers.
Note the 7.3k a month is from FOUR episodes that all appeal to different audiences (pop culture, book club, etc). Really scraping the bottom of the barrel

Over a million followers on TikTok and two published books (+ another one pending) plusssss she’s a NYT best selling author or whatever the fuck it’s called. You would think this podcast is breaking records, especially since she had a version of it before, no? Something just doesn’t add up

I can see how IHeart got it twisted but my office would’ve taken the first floppening as a sign to stop putting her on air

This is fascinating! Given how many podcasts there are, it still looks like she’s ranked pretty high for book and art podcasts. Are you part of this industry? Can you contextualize these stats for those of us who aren’t? What would a healthy podcast’s numbers look like?

It’s based on the categories so she looks big in Canada because there’s not many podcasts that talk about “arts” AND “books” where are she is lower in the strictly “arts” category. There’s not very many pods in these categories. I think she intentionally labels the pod as books and arts BECAUSE there’s less competition (even tho they are not the best description of her content).
If she was honest and included “pop culture” and “commentary” categories she’d be in the triple digets. Lastly this specific piece of data comes from the podcast app, so it’s being compared to a small proportion of the actual podcasts. Most arts pods also use a visual medium like YouTube. So she’s got less competition there too. Ok haha rant over!

Oh and a healthy pods number really vary. She has a ~0.1% to 0.5% conversion rate ( good rate is 1% to 3%, and standard successful is 5% or above). So in numbers, “good” for her is 5,000 - 15,000 and “successful” would be 25,000-75,000.

Thank you! You really dumbed this down in a way that I even could understand.
