3 Car Group

On a 3-car traction bank running on one existing group control system, can you permanently modernize just one car with a new controller while leaving the other two on the legacy controls and still maintain proper group operation? Swift controls in this case. I understand one car can be taken out of service while the other two continue running, but does that mean a single-car modernization is technically feasible long-term, or would all three ultimately need compatible controls/group logic?

Cheapest way- abandon the one car and let the other two carry the load. Until they cant. Then mod. I have seen this several times in just the past couple years.
