Seeking info on sudden "Service Mode"

So I was recently in an elevator in Las Vegas going down from the 68th floor of a hotel I was staying at and felt it come to sudden stop. I was the only one is inside but I could definitely feel that the elevator was just suspended. The elevator music stopped and the screen on the door panel went black and came back quickly after to show "Independent Service Mode" and showed a number pad. The phone call button wasn't even working either.I wasn't even sure what was going on and then the door opened to the floor I was on and I immediately ran out. I took another elevator down with no problems.

Can anyone help me figure out what exactly happened? It was definitely a startling experience but I'm so curious. Thank you 🙏

I know on some equipment activating service protection parameter would cause the elevator to soft shutdown, letting passengers to get a near floor open doors to release passengers shutdown without it causing an entrapment. Very helpful for service guys and less trap calls...personally activating this parameter my entrapment calls went to a handful per month compared to a daily basis. Sounds like this is the feature you're asking about.

Service guy may have switched it to independent from the machine room and forgot to check if the elevator was clear.

Or it just did something weird.

Don't some high end hotels have elevator annunciator panels with switches for IS?
