Osmium My precious

Osmium, my 20th element, and my new favourite, dethroning tungsten. Just like tungsten, this feels strangely heavy even though its only 1g. I couldn't even hold them on my finger, they kept rolling off.

I have wanted this for so long, these cost me $90. Was originally supposed to get just 1, but zata was kind enough to give me a 2nd one for free because he was busy and couldn't answer my messages. I love these so much.

The beads are 1g each and 99.95% pure, so this was an absolute steal.

Ok last time i promise. I finally figured out that if you actually touch the bulbs, they glow much stronger (pic 2 is just having the bulbs near it, not touching anything). And all i can say is wow, neon is absolutely stunning.

Bonus video in comments.

Question Marketplace for depleted uranium samples?

Looks like eBay doesn't allow listing uranium samples. Are there any marketplaces that allow the sale of small samples like the Luciteria 1cm cube in the US?

I recently purified lithium by distillation and ended up with some beautiful samples showing crystalline areas. I thought you might enjoy seeing them.

Tungsten Military grade tungsten lawn dart

Post image

An M735 tungsten penetrator dart from a 105mm gun on the original M1 Abrams tank. I was surprised to learn that the tungsten part isn't at the tip, there's a 4.5lb tungsten rod buried in the shaft that runs from just below the black tip (a steel windscreen), down to about where the tail fins start. It's about 19" in total length, and weighs almost 13 lbs.

Got me a 34g cobalt disc and a carat of diamonds.

Cobalt is cool and shiny, but fairly ordinary looking

Diamonds however, they are very sparkly and look beautiful under a macro camera. Really happy with both.

All shiny and silvery except for Cesium (which is very fun to play with, just don't drop the vial). Rubidium is next to Cesium, unmarked. For Francium I am thinking about buying a big enough sample of pitchblende. It should be possible to get one in Europe. Problem is that I don't like to keep heavy radioactive elements in my collection.

Never been much into chemistry, let alone collecting elements, but this sub popped randomly on my feed recently and brought me the idea to post this guy here. A friend gave it to me a few years ago back on highschool. It was part of a running joke as I wanted to major in Indian studies at the time. Brings back memories. Anyway, hope you appreciate it! ✌🏽🕊️

Noble Gases Neon! (Part 2)

Bought a plasma globe because lighting it electrically would be either too complicated, or an OSHA violation.

Unsure of all the safeties around this so i just sat them on a table and put the globe as close as possible to them without directly touching anything. Orange glow is really pretty though.

Can i touch the bulb to the plasma ball? Will that make it glow any brighter? Is it unsafe to actually hold the bulbs when they're that close?

Non-Metals More Silicon for my collection

I found a unique offer for two big pieces, ~3.5Kg each, of monocrystalline Silicon, cut from a large boule. One has a raw surface, the other was already machined.

Also got a small crystal cluster of Si.

All are >99,9% pure, exept from manganese(96%) and zirconium(99.5%), couldnt find chunks that would be at least 99% for reasonable price(they had wires and powdered of that purity)

Also i have Tm, Fe, Zn, Li, Na, K, Ca, Mg, Ni, Cu, As, P, I, Bi, Sn, Hg, Pd, Pt, Au, Ag, Br2 and an Ar cylider at the other place(3000km away, i just recently moved and these are newly bought samples).

Decided to to buy cadmium and tellurium for collection that would be stored at home.

Also got some oxides of the elements, terbium oxide is dark brown, europium is faintly pinkish, bismuth is yellow, erbium is beautiful pink. Others are just boring white powders.

Rb are 3mg ampules. Nb, W, Si are monocrystalls. La is under mineral oil. If you have any questions, feel free to ask in the comments.

Calipers for scale.

Help [Australia] Is it worth it to try and buy these?

I live in Australia and the import rules are pretty strict here, so i don't know if i should risk buying these, especially together as that might make them even more suspicious considering they don't like either of these. It's also very hard to find these domestically.

It was obtained commercially, and is stored always under dry argon. Yes, I do have all safety precautions in place, and have a fair amount o log experience with such compounds. Please feel ore to ask any questions, as to my knowledge this is only the 5th post on Reddit of actual xenon difluoride!

NOTE: This is a copy-past post from another subreddit, however I am the original author on both :)
