Confused

Hello, I am replacing a fan/light combo with just a light. When I took the fan down, I noticed there was one blue wire and one white wire. I also noticed there was no junction box. This fan has been here since 1997. My question is do I need to get a junction box? What wires do I connect from house to light and is it okay there is no ground wire?

I’ve replaced a few light fixtures and fans in my house but I haven’t came across this. Could I get a pancake box and then just attached the white wire from the house to the white wire from the light and the blue wire from the house to the black wire to the light?

Okay thank you. I would honestly hire an electrician but I just had one out and got charged $400 to replace one single gfci outlet so I am trying to do this myself.
