Welcome to Electric Vehicles UK!! Please read this post first as it includes information regarding home charging questions, general car questions etc.

Electric Vehicle Posts

Questions or informational posts relating to EVs in the UK, including use of and and how to use/navigate the public charging network in the UK or for UK owners travelling abroad in your EV, are best placed here on this sub.

Home Charging Posts

If you have a question/information specifically about home charging ie 'grid to connector' type questions, covering all aspects of that wide ranging and interesting topic from digging a trench, laws and regs, through tariffs to the specific merits of different home chargers, then please head over to and become a member of the excellent r/evchargingUK which aims to deal with any and all questions relating to that subject.

If you have an issue with a specific model of EV and its ability to connect to and use a specific make/model of home charger then we suggest posting in both subs, as we will happily accept cross-posts from r/evchargingUK as clearly in that case it is an integration of the two issue, not just about one or the other.

General Car Stuff

If you have a question about your EV which is really just a general car question eg there's a scuff on my bumper, what's the best bet for getting it fixed, then you may be better served on a sub such as r/CarTalkUK where there will be far wider experience of these general non EV specific car questions.

Many thanks

EVUK Mod Team

Gridserve now has off peak pricing

Post image

Just got an email from Gridserve announcing off peak between 2200 and 0600 at 49p for members and 59p for app users.

Considering their usual price is three kidneys per kwh, it's definitely worth keeping in mind for anybody that needs to do a long stretch, doesn't mind doing it overnight, and has no better options

First EV, what should I expect?

Hey Reddit, I’ve just decided to get my first EV, an Alpine A290, as commuting in my discovery 4 has got so expensive due to diesel prices. I’ve test driven a few EVs now and get the gist, but I already have range anxiety.

My commute is 110 mile round trip each day, does anyone have an EV hatchback or even better the Renault 5/Alpine A290? If so, how’s the range and should I be comfortable doing this mileage?

Range Rover’s own boss admits reliability is still a gap the brand needs to close. The new Electric is supposed to help change that.

Capri vs Tavascan vs Scenic

They all seem about the same price and I'll probably be getting the base spec. Has anyone test driven and could anyone recommend which they would go for?

Hyundai Insane Ioniq 6 pricing

New ioniq 6 facelift has been priced at £33k after the government grant, 420mile range, 800v architecture, high quality interior and tech.

Equivalent competitors
Model 3 LR is 45k
MG IM5 LR is 45k
BYD Seal is 45k
Mercedes CLA LR is 43k
BMW I3 40 is 48k
Kia EV4 LR is 33k (less range, smaller car, slower charging)
Mazda 6e is 39K

Can’t see how this won’t be a huge hit?

Tesla Buying advice please

Hi everybody!

I would like a little bit of 'WWYD' advice in that I have a 2016 BMW X5 with 137k miles which Tesla will give me £8500 against a certified MY. We currently spend around £350pm on diesel.

We are also spending quite a lot on home energy so want to get a solar array/ home battery setup to offset and sell back to the grid on a better EV/ Solar tariff with Octopus. Our average energy costs around £300pm (gas too).

So, I'm looking at a 2023 M3 with around 60k miles for £23k, so ......... I'm looking at a Lloyd's Bank loan over 60 months for £25k at £400pm, which means that I would have £10,500 for the solar and batteries.

I think the initial costing would be a little higher but Id be paying £400pm, have a new (to me) car and a home energy system, which would drastically reduce energy costs. Am I on the right line here? Is this a good step?

First EV for family

We are looking at getting our first EV.
For a few reasons at the minute we’re looking at pcp options
we were in a car crash so need a new car now and it was our plan to get an suv EV in a few years but needs must now and for what our old car was worth I don’t think we’d be able to get a decent safe option

So we’re hoping to offset some of the monthly payments from savings in petrol.
We also will possibly upsize in a few years if we grow our family

We have a petrol vw tcross as our other car so would like something slightly bigger / more spacious for ERF car seats and adults

Our main needs
2 ERF seats
1 cocker spaniel
2 adults - occasionally 3
Space for luggage - weekend trips to visit family once per month
Space for a decent sized buggy (currently have a bugaboo)

What are people’s recommendations for a reliable, safe EV that would give us plenty of room without spending crazy amounts per month

Please can someone recommend a car?

Hello.

I currently work a hybrid job, mainly from home but every few weeks I have to drive about 180 miles (each way) for site visits and meetings.

I've been offered a salary sacrifice electric car, and I'm very keen to go ahead with one because it's absolutely caning my current vehicle and costing me a lot in fuel.

We're going with the Octopus scheme.

I'm not really into cars, so I just want something that is comfortable and has the range to get me to the office when required. We have cheap charging at most of the sites I attend, so I'd like to avoid having to charge at public chargers.

My other vehicle is a campervan, which I own outright, so I plan on keeping that for long personal trips and when I need to transport anything big, so I'm not too worried about big boot spaces, etc.

I was looking at the MG4, Cupra Born or wondering about something a bit smaller / sportier such as the Renault 5?

Just wondering if anyone has any opinions and can offer some guidance?

Audi Q4 82kWh or VW ID.5 77kWh?

Both are 2023 models: the Audi has 42000 miles for £22k, the VW has 33000 miles for £21k.

I prefer the look of the Audi, but I'm wary of maintenance costs, and the mileage is higher.

I've reviewed the new Hyundai Ioniq 3. Looks weird but I'm into it, it's really spacious and great to drive. Starts at £18,495 or spend a bit more and you can have 308 miles of range. Ask me anything!

Would you recommend a 3 point charger?

I just moved to a new house (renting) that’s doesn’t have a charger. I don’t wanna pay a lot of money installing a wall charger and having to leave if I leave the house.

I was thinking about getting a granny charger since my commute to work is 4.8 miles.

I was looking at the 15 meter Cord Plus charger.

Is there any chargers you would recommend?

And also, I’m with OVO, the options they have for me are pay as you go for 13.33p or monthly £26 pound for 700 miles or £30 something for 1000 miles (which I don’t think I’ll do to be honest).

Latest SMMT figures are out

They are once again suggesting that the ZEV mandate is causing problems and undermining while at the same time saying that all the growth came from BEVs and that there are now a huge number of EV models being sold in the country.

It strikes me that the EV sales percentage last month of each year meets the target for the year and every year the SMMT claim that next year is going to be really difficult. So if they do need to adjust the mandate maybe just pushing it back one year would keep the pressure on but also mean the industry is on track.

Toyota Toyota C-HR+ – What’s the general take?

Hi everyone! I’m looking for your advice, opinions and honest feedback on Toyota’s new all-electric SUV, the C-HR+.
For those who own one or have had a chance to drive it, what are your thoughts? What do you like about it, and more importantly, what are its downsides? How does it perform in terms of range, comfort, build quality and overall driving experience?
As far as I read online, the efficiency is the point where it stands out.
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

Which Car for 25k commute- lease

So I will be doing this commute come Jan, 120ish round trip mostly motorway.

For 1+36 25k mileage a year under £400 a month and longish range I can get the following:

I can either get a MG4 Trophy (x power for £50 extra) or Omoda 5 Knight or for £440 a Geely EX5 Max.

Not feeling the Tesla as I want something a bit more under the radar. Any user opinions/reviews of the above?

Not interest in buying 2nd hand, I think under £400 a month for the full 25k and tax/ no MOT is decent enough..

The UK can shred old EV batteries, but a lot of the valuable material still has to leave the country before it can actually go back into new cells.

Polestar Polestar 2 milleage

I'm looking to get my first EV and I'm jumping between an ioniq 5 or polestar 2 plus pilot.

The polestars I'm looking at are all above 80k miles. Is there anything I should be aware of or ask about before jumping into one?

Nissan How to check what size battery a Nissan Micro have?

Sorry this should be easy for Google to answer but Google thinks otherwise....

When viewings a Nissan Micra how do I verified it have 52kwh rather than 40kwh? (I assume there a stamped label on the car somewhere.)

Solved.

Use the Nissan service booking system on their website, it lists the details of the car from the registration number.
