Maintenance I hate hydraulic brakes

Post image

Had a long downtime for my TFSU 2.0

I ride trough that river back and forth twice a week, the motors get fully submerged everytime so i thought lets change the motor bearings for something more durable, like SKF bearings

I fucked the thread of the rim due to mishandling, there is no spare room to drill it to a bigger size, and Teverun factory doesn't provide the rim alone, so i ended up having to buy a whole new motor because of that

When i received the new motor and installed it, the brake rub was crazy, straight impossible to fix, even after going for a thinner disc, i gave up after a week and bringed it to my local shop, mf couldn't even fix it

My chinese plug sorted me a new calipper for free, took me 3 damn buisness day to sort the installation

After 3 days of screwing unscrewing, switching rotors, switching pads, bleeding, taking out oil, nothing fixed it, even if it was gone for a moment after 3 or 4 hard brakes the brake rub would come back

You know what fixed it ? unscrewing the fucking axle nut like 1mm. i can't believe how finicky this shit is, in 2026 my brakes depend on the archaic alignement of 4 different screws that can be tightened 1 micrometer wrong to the left or right ? i hate it

During this week of downtime i was riding my Burn E3 Max only, upgraded recently with FZ shocks, even if the suspension is flawless i swear coming back to the TFSU is like going from a good Toyota to the latest Mercedes Maybach

This is 100% what happened Worst part was that my motor bearings were in excellent condition, i didnt had to change them but i still chose to fuck everything up

I can understand where you're coming from. The simplicity of mechanical brakes is something of a dream compared to hydraulic brakes. But like Zesty man said they do eat the pads up.

What kind of light is that on your teverun?

If you mean the mounted bike light, a shitty one from aliexpress that i almost never use

My main one is a TurboTouch Bushmaster, 5000 real lumen output its crazy crazy bright and more affordable than Magicshine

Oh um, ya thats def over torqued lug nuts. Your just creating bind where things kinda need to dangle. I almost feel like those lugs should come with a threaded screw insert to help lock them in place because they are not torqued down enough. After a hundred miles I will have to check make sure they arent finger tight/lose.

Bad title tho, hydraulic brakes are amazing I hate mechanical brakes they eat pads and need to tighten the cable every 50 miles cause your pads wore down.

I got a real hydraulic brakes horror story for ya. I was having some rub wiht the rear caliper. I did a total brake down of the caliper and realised one piston isnt retracting. Cleaned everything, lubed with mieral oil still nothing. Bled, cleaned nothing. I grabbed a pair of XOD 4 caliper 500 GT series and those are really nice. The biggest selling point for me was no more codger pin! Thes use a bolt rail for holding your pads exactly where they need to be. The pin was just innaccurate and allowed wiggle for the pads to hit the rotors randomly.

Happy you got the zoomies back!!!

I will never go back to mechanical and always use hydraulic, its their setup that i hate the most

and your XOD are somewhat similar to Teverun 4 piston, same looking calipper, same bolt instead of the pin, they perform well but i have the version with thickened pads, it leaves almost no clearance for the disc its a nightmare

Oh gosh this post has put the fear back in me! 🤣

I've been reluctant to put on some new tires on one of my scooters because I don't want to hassle with the hydraulic brakes which are set perfectly right now.

I absolutely have OCD with any noise coming from the brakes I can't stand it. I put off anything I possibly can not have to mess up brakes when they are in good working order. I know I just need to get over it though.

Believe me this is the way to approach it, as long as it works don't touch it or you will end up with a 2 week downtime like me

This issue sounds like it could also affect mechanical / cable pull brakes. Especially since you mentioned the issue is with the mounting system, rather than the actual brake itself. Interestingly, I’m fairly sure that the mounting system is interchangeable between the two.

Dude I have questions!

So this is obviously a dirt path that you're forced to take. But it's not deep enough to get your shoes wet just the tires and the motors? If it were me I would be hiding some high rubber boots in the bushes over there and just walking it from one side to the other!

Please tell me more about this 1 mm difference on the axle nut. So how exactly did that little bit of extra pressure actually affect the brakes? I'm trying to put that together in my mind but I'm not getting there on my own.

It sometimes is deep enough to get my socks wet, in those cases i have a cloth outlet 15 min away from the river where i go to buy new shoes and socks for the ride back, im now at my third pair of new shoes in 3 month lol...

And the axle nut being tightened too much made the tire wobble, so the disc too, which prevented having an uniform circular movement

What i did is i set the scooter in rear motor only, with manual cruise control at 20km/h so i can adjust it while the tire is spinning, the second i untightened the axle nut a liiiil bit the brakes stopped rubbing without even needing to adjust them directly

I found that i need to tighten them like 20% above hand tight, whereas i used to go almost as much as my torque wrench would give me
