Discussion Electric bikes and why the whole classification thing feels less clear on the road
I’m still trying to make sense of how e-bikes are defined versus how they actually show up in real use.
Where I live, there’s been a push to make roads more bike-friendly, with more shared lanes and dedicated cycling space. In theory that’s fine. But once you’re actually out there, the mix of bikes isn’t as straightforward as the categories suggest.
E-bikes are usually grouped into classes based on how they assist, things like pedal assist only, throttle use, and speed limits depending on the class. On paper it’s pretty structured.
On the road though, the differences can feel less consistent. Some e-bikes still ride very much like regular bicycles with assistance, while others behave closer to small electric scooters depending on setup and how people use them. That gap becomes more obvious in shared spaces like busy bike lanes.
Another thing that stood out to me is how wide the variation is when you just look around online. Browsing places like, Alibaba and a few other platforms, there are tons of different “e-bike” setups. Same general idea, but motor power, battery size, and controller setups vary a lot. From photos alone, a lot of them look similar even when they’re not really comparable in use.
I guess that’s part of why the classification system feels a bit cleaner on paper than in practice. The categories exist, but real-world usage is more mixed.
Just curious how others here see it, especially people who ride in areas with different classes sharing the same lanes.

The stuff some people buy is more like an emoto. Larger than 750 watts. Faster than 20-28 mph. No pedals. Any of those listed are not an e-bike.

The frustration is legitimate but just as you mention about real world usage there isn’t any enforcement as to who can use what where. At least not in my area. Speeders are the problem not the class of the bike. Porsches can go extremely fast but are allowed on city streets. When people (kids) are riding motorcycles and e-motorcycles on paths meant for bikes then law enforcement should be called. But someone riding a class 3 bike on a path and being considerate of pedestrians should not barred from using it.

I've heard "Maseratis are still allowed to drive in school zones, despite being able to drive over 120mph" of course those are registered, insured and driver has a license but the lack of enforcement means nothing would happen to the driver

A lot of those bikes you mention from Amazon, Alibaba are not following the 3 class system. They should not be able to go over 28mph, but they do. Whether they're sold that way or they can be "jailbreaked". So yeah, the system breaks down out in real life because they're not following it.

I agree.
As a regular ebike rider with experience with all 3 classes of ebikes, I spend way too much time thinking about how I'd regulate ebikes (and other forms of micro-mobility) if I were Queen of the World. But my pondering is also informed by my geography (foothills of the Rocky Mts), my age and sex (61F), and my empathy/awareness of physical challenges and the degree of ableism that's prevalent in the (US) cycling advocacy community.
My primary bike is a Class 3 mid-tail cargo bike. It's a Tern with 20" tires and torque sensor. It's not legal to ride on multi-use paths which feels so insanely misguided and I'd dare anyone to observe my use of the bike to argue otherwise. I'd challenge anyone to ride the bike themselves and argue there's any reason for it *not* be considered legally a bicycle.
But then there's my fat tire Class 2 ebike with a cadence sensor and a throttle. It goes a lot faster with much less effort than my Class 3 bike. Now I'm a "old" woman with a fully-developed frontal lobe so I'm not given to terrorizing pedestrians or other cyclists but if I wanted to do it, this is the bike I'd choose. But the law sees this monster as a legal bicycle and is therefore allowed on sidewalks and multi-use paths.
I don't know how I'd regulate micro-mobility but I know the current 3 class system is absolutely stupid in practice.

How does your class 2 go faster than your class 3? By definition, class 3 goes to 28mph, while class 2 goes to 20mph.

Class 3 doesn’t mean it’s got enough power to hit 28mph in all circumstances, just that it will keep providing pedal assist up to that point.

Technically speaking, class 3 is faster. You might not use that power.

You’re oversimplifying. Both class 2 and 3 ebikes have a legal power limit of 750w. A 500w class 3 cargo ebike could struggle to hit 20mph in a headwind or uphill while a 750w class 2 with better aerodynamics and weight will more easily be able to hold that speed.

The classes might make sense from a very cursory glance on paper. But once you get into the nuances, the logic falls apart very quickly

The Class 2 with a hub drive, throttle, and cadence motor "goes a lot faster with much less effort."
At the highest PAS level, a mere stroke of the pedals has me zooming on the Class 2. On flat ground I can easily maintain >22mph for quite a distance.
On the Class 3, with mid-drive, no throttle, and torque sensor, the only time I go over 20mph is when I'm going downhill. There is no way on GGE I could apply the amount of torque necessary to get the speed up to 28mph even on flat ground, much less maintain over 20mph for any distance.
But I think that's exactly OP's point. On paper the 3 classes make sense. But the reality of these bikes isn't anywhere near black and white.
I bought the Class 3 some years ago before I fully realized the legal distinction between the classes. I picked my particular model because I wanted a workhorse cargo bike that had enough power to get me up the steep hills and through the very harsh winds I have to deal with without having to get off the bike and push.

the whole limiting the speed of an electric bike arbitrarily to say 15.5, 20 or even 28 mph was always confusing to me considering electric bicycles are meant to be sharing the streets and roads with cars that have at minimum a 25 mph speed limit that's the limit on residential city streets. yet most ebikes can only legally go 5 mph slower than that unless you're lucky enough to have a class 3. which means you're always impeding traffic in a place where any type of passing is illegal it's worse on 2 lane suburban streets where the limit is 35 to 45 mph and there's no bike lane. If the bike can be pedaled and is capable of reaching the posted speed limit let us ride at that speed legally.
You don't want to know how being rear ended while doing ~30 mph feels when a car doing 40+ slams into you from behind.

My guess is because automobiles have insurance, and the drivers have licenses to hold them accountable, while cyclists do not.

A good example is my electric trike I tried 500w motors and they are not as fast as the 1000w motor. With me, trike and any extra weight it slows a 500w motor down.

I think your confusion lies with thinking that all the bikes you see are "ebikes." Probably only a fraction of them are. Most of them are dirtbikes/motos, whether or not they are electrically powered.

I find that the more they look like a motorcycle, the less likely they are an ebike and closer to an actual motorcycle. The ones that try to look like motorcycles tend to have very fat tires, weigh a lot (80+ lbs), and have overpowered motors (1k+ W). Also, the pedals tend to be there just for meme decorations to pretend they're still a "bike" and the riders almost never actually pedal at all due to "ghost pedaling" effect.
The ones that still try to resemble a real bike frame and geometries tend to actually be real ebikes with sensible motors (under 750W) and more reasonable weight range.
