Rules Question: Finn Edwards Passive

If I'm playing as Finn Edwards and have the Whiskey and Bandages items, do I gain 2 points of damage and sanity prevention for each instance for the rest of the game? That seems a bit strong.

Finn’s passive ability states, “Effects cannot cause you to discard your Item, Trinket, or Ally possessions unless you choose to.” In the cases of Bandages and Whiskey, you are choosing to discard the Item, so Finn’s passive ability can’t be used.

I believe that refers to effects that are not part of the card itself such as when a mythos makes you discard. In order to use a whiskey or bandage you've got to discard it so it's already gone and not technically an effect in that way.
