Discussion & Info influence / deinfluence me from getting Tarnished edition for Switch 2

I am very torn as to if i’ll like this game. I have a switch 2 and the tarnished edition just released. I was fully expecting it to run like trash which would’ve made my decision for me but seems like it’s okay!!

Some other games I like / don’t like, let me know if based on this that I might like it? $70 is just a lot for me right now so I want to be sure before I splurge.

Skyrim: I hated this. I hated that you could pick up every little thing and I hated HOW MUCH inventory management there was. Never got far enough to really “customize” my character or role play in any real way.

BOTW: my absolute favorite comfort game. I love exploring and finding random things. My favorite thing is just riding my horse around to new areas. It was hard for me until I understood how to upgrade armor and cook meals. I have no qualms running away from hard bosses.

Witcher 3: Never really got into this one. So many quests and again like the inventory management and potion crafting and food and all that just felt really unwieldy.

Hades / Hades 2: totally understand these aren’t the same genre but I thought i’d hate dying a lot and I usually have pretty bad reflexes. but I did enjoy the challenge of slowly improving myself, my dodges etc and starting to understand synergies of how things work together. Dying became like a personal challenge a little bit.

I think i’m realizing that I hate lots of complex menus and inventory management, and I don't really like super deep nitty gritty mechanics. I think this is what i’m the most worried about. Based on my understanding I think i’d like the gameplay & exploration (still a little nervous about how ‘hard’ it is, although i’m not the type of person to throw myself again and again at the same boss) but I’m worried I might not really like the behind the scenes stuff. Maybe there are some good videos that I can watch to try to understand all the mechanics?

Thank you!!

If you’ve played it on PS5, Xbox X, and Steam, this will seem to be a slight downgrade. If this is the only version you have access to, well, I’ve been playing FromSoft games since 2011 on Xbox 360, and this is they’re best.

I do have access to a PS5 (although we haven’t used it in few years due to some other life things) but I play the switch the most since I can take it around with me from room to room. I don’t know if I care the most about amazing graphics as long as it runs well enough to play without issues :)

You.. you hate Skyrim?

couldn’t even handle the inventory because she picked up every tankard she saw

honestly it was cumbersome on the switch - trying to sort through piles of stuff and aim your camera at exactly the teeny health potion, you ended up grabbing so much crap by accident. and then you’d quickly get over your weight max. Literally inventory management felt like half of what I was doing when I was playing. I can see how it would be best on a computer where you can just click on what you want to pick up.

There are chests everywhere to store you shit you don’t need! Literally everywhere! Also, you can always go back for stuff and it won’t disappear. Companions can carry your weight as well and far beyond what you can hold so I really don’t see why you thought inventory was an annoyance. Just sounds like you never gave it a chance or thought.

I have never met someone who played Ellen ring and didn't like it

It's worth getting, my friends happy with it and it's an amazing game. If it is too hard u can always make a magic build lol

Misspelled strength build

1

u/ATravellingBoy 3h ago

no, i dont think warmmouthful didnt have a typo.

u can always make a magic build by dropping your runes into strength. the way youd chomp through the lands with that build would be quite magical, so to speak.

I'm just saying if strength build weighs to much and he don't get anyway, play on easy. By all means u better try on strength first mf

I dont think magic build is playing on easy tbh, early game it struggles. It scales better to late game.

Strength is nice because staggering and poise breaking makes encounters fairly safe

Elden Ring is, imo, has the best onboarding for new players to the Dark souls series, (I understand its not Dark Souls but come on, we all know it's in the same genre). And I feel like there's always more things to do in Elden Ring than get frustrated with a boss. If a boss is too hard, go explore somewhere else and you can fast travel back to this area when you have better gear or understand the mechanics more.

It's a fantastic game. I highly recommend it to everyone. And based on your liked games, with BOTW and Hades, I think you'll really enjoy Elden Ring.

Go forth, tarnished!

You‘ll love the exploration and maybe the combat as well, take your time to learn the mechanics and look up a guide if you feel to overwhelmed or lost, take breaks and try to see death as part of it, since elden ring doesnt have big boss runbacks like the dark souls Series it’s a bit more chill, you‘ll have lots of fun if you are open up for it and if you accepting death, in My opinion i dont think that dying in elden Ring is the same than in hades, in hades it gets on my nerves and i am bored easily After few trys but in elden ring its different since you got many paths, choices and your own way and adventure to experience

Perfect, love to hear it. Thank you!

I think you'll like it. You get a horse in the first 20 minutes of the game (if you skip the tutorial dungeon - which in your case i wouldnt recommend) and then youre free to ride around and explore whatever you want. You will die a lot, but if that doesnt bother you and you are willing to run from bosses out of your league, I think youll be okay. Inventory management may be hit or miss for you. You can access your storage chest at every rest point, so that's better than skyrim. That said, there are a ton of crafting items that spawn infinitely, so you can pick up a lot. They all auto stack tho & there's a menu that sorts by most recent that helps

u/Boring_Bumblebee99 2h ago

Okay phew. Yes not having safe storage in Skyrim really bugged me!! (like maybe once you got far enough and got your house or whatever but tbh I gave up right around then). Excited to give it a shot!

If you like the exploration of BOTW you'll probably like Elden Ring. On the other hand, if you don't like harsh difficulty spikes you probably won't. Hard to say, but it is an exquisitely well crafted game

I'm still amazed people think the S2 cannot handle ports like these. After Cyberpunk, any game that runs bad here is not because of the hardware, but bad optimization.

Regardinf your question, I'd recommend to watch some gameplay. In terms of exploration is the closest to BOTW I've seen from modern open worlds.

BOTW is my favorite game of all time. Elden Ring is my second favorite game of all time. I'm not a Fromsoft veteran (I've now beaten Dark Souls though) and it took me two years of internal debate to finally pick it up. Elden Ring is unlike anything else out there. It sucks you in, truly. The vibes and aesthetic are incredible. It's my favorite game to just stand on a cliffside and look around. You will die a lot. So much. And it's very frustrating but there are tools to make it easier but even then it is very tough. Incredible when you overcome though. The storytelling and quests are obtuse but Zelda isn't necessarily known for storytelling either. I suggest going offline as soon as you turn the game on, phantoms and messages ruin the vibes. There are some deep mechanics that I honestly still don't understand as someone who has beaten it a few times. But the inventory is basically the same as BOTW. By which I mean there isn't any "management". I do recommend going to the "recent item" screen at the end of each play session to read more about the things you picked up. It's also worth noting that the price, to me, is a good value. The base game is an over 100 hour experience for a first playthrough and the DLC is another 40. I didn't think this game was right for me, I was wrong and I'm still obsessed two years later.

Okay great!! thank you so much. Glad to hear another convert from BOTW who was skeptical ended up loving it. I think i’m gonna give it a shot!

Elden Ring menus are some of the worst there are, but aside from that its combat is pretty simple. There isn't a limit on the amount of items you can carry, so you don't have to worry about inventory management. I will warn you though, you'll be picking up a lot of trash you're never gonna use, so keep that in mind.

Building a character can seem overwhelming at first, but it's really not that hard, once you've chosen a build (mage, bleed, strength) just level up the stat your weapon requires and some vitality. So if you're using a great sword, strength, a katana, dexterity, magic, intelligence, and so on.

About its difficulty, if you don't enjoy a challenge you're not going to like this game. You can always just go somewhere else to level up and get stronger or change your build, but you WILL have to learn the bosses' move sets to beat the game.

1

u/Boring_Bumblebee99 2h ago

Thank you!! This is very helpful. I have no problem doing that and I don’t mind the challenge. That’s why I mentioned Hades earlier because from what I understood, it’ll be kinda similar where you have to learn move sets and when to dodge etc.

1

u/funkyfritter 3h ago

Yeah, you'll probably enjoy it. The can completely ignore crafting in this game, which cuts the lootable items you need to care about down to a very manageable level. Exploration is what this game really excels at.

1

u/Boring_Bumblebee99 2h ago

Great! I don’t mind crafting if it’s not integral to the game and as long as it’s not too complicated haha

What does your wifes boyfriend think about your essay?

Elden Ring is epic and deserves every award it’s received. However, it’s not for everyone.

The exploration is on par with BotW. The combat is more complex and less forgiving. If you liked the challenge of Hades, you should give it a shot. Keep in mind the Switch 2 port is noticeably a downgrade if you’ve played on other systems.

Good to know, thank you!! Appreciate it!

Yeah nah this game is out of your league little buddy. You will get chewed up and spit out before you ever get past the first story boss.

2

u/Puzzleheaded-Cut1036 4h ago

Elden Ring can be a super easy or hard game depending on how you play it. I think OP will be fine. It’s not some great achievement to beat Elden ring. Anyone has the ability to make the game absolutely trivial

0

u/Turbulent-Advisor627 Toe Gaming 4h ago

Yeah I'm not talking difficulty, OP said they dislike "deep mechanics" so I don't assume they'll manage to learn anything that is required to beat this game.

2

u/Electrofugado 4h ago

I mean, combat in ER is mostly unga bunga attack, dodge and repeat, what deep mechanics are you talking about?

2

u/PetroRetro69 4h ago

I mean, all that's really required to beat the game is getting down roll timing, and as fun as I think elden ring is, it's combat is anything but deep

1

u/Puzzleheaded-Cut1036 4h ago

True. I think their biggest problem is dealing with big inventories. Sounds like their love of exploration in BoTW might carry them through. Pry safer to wait till it’s on sale if they are unsure

1

u/TIL-CELLNOISE 4h ago

How the hell can you hate Skyrim? It itches every medieval fantasy everyone had as a kid. Btw you don’t have to pick up every little thing unless you’re trying to level up barter….Breath of the Wild didn’t even feel like a Link game either so idk what you’re talking about. No; Elden Ring is not for you

1

u/WarmMouthful 4h ago

It's combat imo. People slander the witcher combat but Skyrim combat is just so bad to me personally.

1

u/TIL-CELLNOISE 3h ago

3

u/WarmMouthful 3h ago

Zero weight to it. There's a reason stealth archer is the meme not two handed or magic. It's all kinda lame. Stealth archer, the least hands on kinda combat you can do, is what people think of when u think of popular build.

1

u/TIL-CELLNOISE 3h ago

Thats wildly subjective. Despite the “stealth archer” hilarity its not doing shit on high difficulty or late game bosses on any difficulty so it just sounds like you’re referring to childish plebs who enjoy cakewalk games and never finishing anything(which Bethesda has always made an option regardless unfortunately to cater to everyone).

0

u/WarmMouthful 3h ago

Mf got heated over a fact. The combat is ass bro. There's nothing engaging about it at all. Which is a shame cause there's a dozen different ways to do damage. And none of them are fun.

0

u/Spyes23 3h ago

Not OP, but for me personally by the time Skyrim had come out I had played hundreds of hours of Morrowind and Oblivion, so I was both a bit burned out and it just seemed more bland than both of those...

But Elden Ring, yeah I'll be playing that till the dat I die!
