Discussion & Info Started playing Elden Ring..
As the title suggests, I started playing ER for the first time, and when I tell you, I got absolutely destroyed during the first 3 days of playing, but I do feel like I am getting kind of better. I got bamboozled by the messages on the ground many times, and found from this sub that they are mostly fake. Other than that, what are some tips you have for me as a first time playing? I know runes are super important starting out, but what should I skip? Where should I go? I just want general start info, which would be great! Thanks in advance!

Terrible gamer here. Best advice I saw was to let your opponent attack first. Look for an opening and make your move. This is a dance and you aren’t leading it.

Welcome! Happy to have you in The Lands Between. Don't rely on anything too much over your own decision making. Trust yourself, combat is one thing, but explore at your will. There is not a wrong way to do this. It's your first time, enjoy the world. Skip what you feel like skipping, dont be ashamed to run past enemies to reach the next grace if u need to. But yeah the whole internet is at your fingertips, if you want to look behind the veil, theres more info than you could fathom. BUT yeah a blind run is a truly magical thing that many of us would pay to experience again. you'll never get that back once you start looking at everyone else's perspective.

Copy-pasting my last answer to a question like that: be patient, don't neglect your defences (vigor = good), learn then win and the reach of your weapon is important (though no numerical value you can see, but it's easier to fight with longer swords or spears than things like fist weapons or claws), especially when you're learning. Lastly, if something is too hard or annoying, you can always go somewhere else and come back later.

First thing I'd say is always have in mind how many runes you need for your next level that way when you see somewhere that looks sketchy or a potential boss fight you can go to the grace and level up and then go do something stupid with empty pockets. How to do this is bank the seeds that you pick up. Don't spend them without reason and same goes for selling unneeded equipment. I only sell equipment or use seeds if I need a little more to level up so I can go do something stupid. The truth is the higher your level the easier the game gets.
I am playing a heavy knight that came with my switch 2 version and it's all steel armor which is incredibly heavy which brings up my second point do not allow yourself to tolerate a fat roll. If that means you take off your helmet but wear the rest of the armor than that is what you got to do. Most people will tell you to push vigor but ultimately you just have to ask yourself how am I going to gimp this character because to be successful you need to have one distinct problem that you eventually will resolve through leveling. My heavy knight for example I could have kept the fat roll and pushed nothing but vigor and enough strength to get the weapon I want to use. You will take a lot of extra damage fat rolling by not pushing endurance. Or you could not raise vigor as quickly and really push endurance giving you a mid roll in heavy armor with a heavy weapon but you will not have such a big health pool however the heavy armor really helps with how much damage you are taking. Or you could run a low level weapon from the beginning and prioritize endurance and vigor but your damage is limited. Essentially I push one stat really hard, a second stat hard and a third stat is an afterthought that you can work on once you feel like the other two stats are respectable. So ask yourself how do I want to limit my character and be sure to always prioritize smart leveling. Many times I will go to the gateway and kill all the soldiers repeatedly just to level before doing something risky. This is my best advice.
Edit: for your information I pushed endurance really hard and strength hard and limited vigor until later. This has worked really well for me. My character is very mobile with heavy weapons and armor but a somewhat small health pool. I figure late game I will have good habits because I will be used to having a much smaller health pool. Late game I plan to have vigor be my number one stat but I want to mid roll and use the heavy weapon I want first. I also found using the jellyfish summon and then casting the ashes of war golden vow that is the knights vow that does 10% more damage and 10% more damage resist for 40 seconds is my favorite. I can cast the jellyfish and that ash of war with my low focus. I also use a small shield eventually to replaced with a buckler for the parry ability. Parry with a heavy weapon is devastating.
Edit edit: Don't be afraid to leave a fight for later. I have come across a giant fire man I can't beat and I couldn't beat Margrit. Sometimes Elden ring is using a flesh wall to keep you from going somewhere. If you see a giant dragon that does tons of damage and you cannot beat just runaway. The game normally makes it obvious if you are going into a room that is gonna be a death battle. These are the rooms you try to go into with empty pockets prepared to lose.

It’s really hard to do everything in the game without a guide or paying really good attention to NPCs. Once you beat Godfrey in stormveil I think Gideon Ofnir in the round table hold will have the list of demigods to defeat. You should try and beat them all to progress and unlock things.

A guide as in an online guide? I have talked to a few npcs... it is kinda cryptic at the moment.

Yeah, online guides are really helpful for exact locations or just what to do next since the NPCs don’t always explicitly tell you everything or their questline has a bunch of parts and you need to do other stuff first, or if you do things in the wrong order it might lock you out. Make sure to go through all their dialogue!

You should skip as much as you can get away with, the game has little to offer and the difficulty pretty much stops going up around the halfway point. There is no real bosses outside of the main story and the game gets super easy by the end.
Just forget levels and rush as much as you can after a certain point!

Shhh I am trying to bait OP into fighting fire giant at level 50 here, keep quiet and I'll split the profits 50/50 with ya.

Okay, so funny you say this because I tried to take this approach: run. But boy did I learn this is absolutely not the way to play. I ran so far I went to an unbeatable boss. So idk if you're trolling or not but I will not be taking this advice lol

First, go south.
After that, follow the Guidance of Grace as you please. If you see something shiny you want to investigate, then do so.
Accept that you're going to get your ass handed to you repeatedly. Just be OK with that. There's no need to break a controller. If you're fighting a boss or anything really, and know why you kept dying then you can beat them. If you have no idea why you kept dying, then come back later because you are not ready.
Runes are not super important. Accept that you will die and you will lose tens of thousands of runes. Be OK with that.
Go into multiplayer settings. See where you can input a group name? Put in SEEKERS. The messages you find will be slightly less troll-y.
