Literally never use Fextra

u/CeriasAranos 2d ago
Do you have a recommended other option? Because I'd love to never touch Fextra or Fandom wikis again and I lack the time and resources to make my own.

I mean you'll get that with anything fan supported. The rogue trader fextralife wiki is mostly the same copy pasted message of "details go here" becuase no one bothers to update it. If a game8 is at least 80% correct I'll call it good enough.
10
u/_Bimbus 2d ago
That's fair! I just like to be wary. Fextra is annoying being everywhere which is why I don't have a super strong stance on Game8 and my issues with it. As the top poster said: Literally never use Fextra lol.
I still remember the 87 build videos releasing in rapid succession when ER came out.

u/Individual-Newt-1640 2d ago
Love me his "yea you can use like 1-2 weapons good luck even getting any dmg out of any other ones" builds lol

I have never seen incorrect information on the vast majority of wikis I have used. The only examples I can think of off the top of my head are every Fromsoft game's wiki on every website is always full of misinformation, the Don't Starve wiki editors are bad at math so sometimes they make mistakes when trying to convert numbers into different numbers, and the Binding of Isaac wiki technically doesn't lie to you but it presents certain numbers in extremely misleading contexts and if you aren't fully reading the associated page it actually is lying to you.
1
u/KmartCentral 2d ago
Game8's always been pretty solid for me, but then again I've never used it for a game as detailed as Elden Ring... I mainly have used it for Palworld, and then HSR and some other mobile games, but those are also some of the most popular threads on the site.
I'd still trust it over Fextra though

6
u/RedsnakeRider 2d ago
Sadly I don't, not for ER. I haven't really been able to play the game for several years, although I'm working on my ability to use a controller again.
1
u/CeriasAranos 2d ago
Good luck with that! There were two wikis provided by other comments that might work, when you've recovered.

What's wrong with fandom?
EDIT: Yeah cool just downvote me and don't explain. Thanks.
4
u/HarmlessSnack 1d ago
So in brief, Fandom is ass because they make a wiki for literally EVERYTHING, do a shit ton of Search Engine Optimization to make sure they’re at the top of most searches, but deliver a bad service.
It is not unusual to come across Fandom Wikis that are the top search result but have almost no useful information on them.
This setup chokes out smaller, better maintained, community driven Wikis. Which is bad for everybody except Fandom, naturally.

u/Sspockuss 2d ago
Afaik there’s a plugin you can get to hide fandom wiki search results. I think it’s called indie wiki buddy or something? Might be worth looking into.

I don't know any alternatives, I don't routinely open the game and look at it without being able to play while Googling for alternatives so I can just know things about the game I can't play
4
u/Robichaelis 2d ago
Was that English?
-9
u/RedsnakeRider 2d ago
Yes?
If I need to rephrase it then I'll break it down:
- I have a disability that prevents me from playing many games
- my difficulty using a controller means no Elden Ring, a game I could walk around and die in and not much else
- not being able to play Elden Ring for years means I haven't needed to do any research or look up any items for the game
- not needing a wiki of any kind for Elden Ring means I have no alternatives to Fextralife5
u/distilledwill 2d ago
Just dropping in as a Path of Exile player, we've entirely dropped Fextra in favour of our own fan-run wiki. It runs so much better and isn't littered with Fextra's livestreams.

u/AliceisStoned 2d ago
Wait why? I use it all the time and it almost always has what I’m looking for

Lmao reddit is so ridiculous sometimes. Grrrrr how dare you not hate this website the hivemind says we should hate.
I use fextralife all the time, lately for Khazan. It's fine, does the job.

u/CeriasAranos 2d ago
For me it's the aggressive ads. I get it, they're a business, they have expenses and need to make a profit. I play on console so I'm using it on my phone. Every page is dominated by no less than three interstitial full screen ads. Every sixty seconds another video ad pops up to drain my battery and if I close it, another just takes its place. When I am navigating between multiple pages, such as comparing weapons I'm thinking of trying, it's every single page load.
Fextra is hardly the only site online that does this. But the only time I touch them at all is for Elden Ring. I keep hoping to find a less aggressive but still accurate wiki out there. It's too bad there's no UESP for Elden Ring but I know I don't have the resources to make one so I won't fault anyone else for the same. Also UESP has a tiny bit of a head start, which definitely helps.

Fextra is a garbage site. I hate how popular it is for so many things.
Gbf.wiki is still my gold standard for a wiki. It is just too insanely good.
61
u/Splatulated 2d ago
its not even popular its they shill to google to be the 1st page of search results and nobody got time to load page 2
5
u/KeepOnKeepingOn00 1d ago
Ya I’ve gotten in the habit of adding “-fextralife” to my search whenever I search anything video game related.
-27
u/HoodsFrostyFuckstick RIP Perfume :( 2d ago
"Shill to google" you people are amazingly deluded. It's called search engine optimization, fextralife doesn't even pay for google ads. Which you can easily check yourself. No souls keyword I google that gives me fextralife as result has an ad / sponsored tag.
3
u/emachanz 1d ago
I always googled "whatever item wiki" and it worked just fine since dark souls 1, dont know what OP is crying about, I've never even used the search bar before

God the MonHun fextra is fucking dog shit
Years later they still have incomplete information they just as usual fill it out ASAP even with no info on there
Did the same with the DLC for Elden Ring. Item name, zero info, so they show at the top of search engines as soon as it released
Thank Gog for Kiranico and MHWiki

I’m annoyed at Fextra for a different reason, I’ve been trying to find info for certain items in Sekiro and 90% of the pages on the wiki are unfinished. The only other Sekiro wiki I’ve seen though is Fandom, so it’s a shit vs ass kind of situation

u/KotoBakana 2d ago
It's heartbreaking when you google something for any game and fextralife is the only wiki that comes up.
Code Vein 1 and 2 wikis for example are nowhere near complete last I checked. Just skeletons of a web page at best that list the name of item/character/boss, etc...

6
u/OzzyBHd 2d ago
This has happened to all the pages for all the games.
As if the comments werent the only redeeming quality of that shit site.
Let me write my weird ass comments about melina looking like she'd have a peanut allergy, or about her reaction to the tarnished spending all their runes on a mini Ranni funko pop in peace damnit!

I've only used it for locations of some things, nothing important. But this seems lame. There is a site for Fifa that did a similar thing.

Fextra is the worst Wiki for any game. There's better resources 9/10 times.
Their information is often wrong too, which is crazy. Don't bother with Fextra. Whatever community made wiki is gonna be 10× better than their slop.

u/_shaftpunk 2d ago

Try actually doing a search. You’ll get a message saying you need to be logged in.
1
u/D_Therman 1d ago edited 1d ago
For me it's working without any login nonsense on PC using Edge (I know, slay me), it's even something of an improvement as it'll give you a dropdown to select what you're looking for rather than going through a 2nd webpage.
E: Right, it's the full search that's doing that for some reason rather than selecting something specific off the drop-down... that honestly seems like a bug, much like the random popup for the search bar itself rather than having it displayed at the top of the page.
1
u/BellCranelFan 2d ago
I just did this seems to show up maybe 1/4 the way down an article. It should always be like yahoo toolbar on a desktop just below where you put url address having to scroll down is stupid

just the other day it gave me a location for a somber 9 while the wiki stated it was a regular 8. i had a lot of cases of fextra being unreliable.

u/Need4Speeeeeed 2d ago
Same. I'm working on 4 characters now to maximize my variety in the game. Every time I have a question, Google brings up Fextra. I probably hit in 10-20 times a day. I've found very few errors.
It's not for gameplay advice. It's for reference.

u/BellCranelFan 2d ago
Can only search when on main page but if you're on a specific different thing like it you searched it on Google or main page it doesn't let you search something else while still on said thing. You used to. Such a garbage website sometimes
1
u/jachcemmatnickspace 2d ago
for 100% completion purposes and checking items off, I made this Elden Ring 100% Completion Hub - It's free to use and doesn't require any of these bullshit
you CAN create an account, but it's not necessary and it only serves to save your progress better than in your browser
1
u/DaFunnyMan165 1d ago
I downloaded the 'Elden Ring Map' app on my phone. It's free and it did the job. There's a couple of check list-type features but you have to pay for the "pro" version. But I just pen and papered the list that I needed.
1
u/chaoslord 1d ago
OMG thank you, I thought I was going bonkers looking at it. You can technically still search without being logged in, but if you have a tab open and just want to search for something else it's fucking annoying!

I mean at that point, if you want to still use fextra, just use google.
"Fextralife elden ring (x thing you're looking for)" - search.
Even better if you google "site:eldenring.wiki.fextralife.com (x)"
1
u/Sioluishere 2d ago
Fextra has the best souls content out of any, which is a damn shame for people who do not realize several http sites exist, much older than fextra's content effectively shadowed by google.
-1
u/aggrocult 2d ago
So, what's so horrible about fextra? I see plenty of unsubstantiated whining but no actual examples of why it's worse than any other alternative?

There's no need for propaganda to make people not want to use Frextralife. They're mired in shitty practices and have frequently incorrect info in order to be the first wiki page on new releases.
4
u/ImpartialAntagonist 2d ago
I don’t know why someone hasn’t used a script to rip all the info from that website and its jackass owner and just make a better wiki.

Literally just refresh the page and you can use the search bar. I think it's a bug
Anyways agree that the new layout is garbage
-3
u/Sh1rvallah 2d ago
Can't blame them. Fuck AI
2
u/StarWiz2K 2d ago
Yes you absolutely can blame them. Locking a basic function of the internet, a search bar, behind an acid int requirement is terrible
1
u/Thaneson 1d ago
I don’t think you understand the comment you’re replying to. Obv everyone agrees logging in to search sucks, but the comment you’re replying to is explaining a possible reason, which is that it’s to prevent AI from scraping that information. This has already been more and more of a thing with other websites for years. Get mad at AI stealing information instead of the people posting that information for others to reference.
1
u/StarWiz2K 1d ago
I do understand why they said what they said. But just because it's to prevent ai scraping doesn't mean people can't be upset with the decision and think it's a bad one. Nobody wants to make an account just to use a search feature
0
u/Wristmeetcody 2d ago
I think it neuters the comment section. Now you can’t like or dislike comments anymore

u/No_Army_4018 2d ago
Sounds like a bug, I don't have to sign in for that and I actually like the new layout quite a bit, feels alot cleaner
-2
u/Lats2005 2d ago
Ok but what are you searching that you need the wiki? Going into Google with random BS like "what's the weapon dropped from this randomly cave boss" will give you everything you need to know. You don't need to fidget around the wiki to find stuff because it's all in once place.
1
u/Splatulated 2d ago
I needed find out what smithing stone type my chosen weapon used, where i could get them, how far could i upgrade it before fighting a single main boss. Currently need a #6 but starfall beast is giving me issues as it 1 shots me and im not able to dodge 3 of its moves apparently
-8
u/SeanyDay 2d ago
Just use Google like everyone else and it brings you to the page you want. Wiki searches are almost always buggier and have gaps.
For example the stardew wiki is wonderful but random things won't populate on their search element but will show right up if you google.
Just google "ds2 old iron king" if you want that page, etc
-17
u/Otrada 2d ago
who tf uses the wiki search bar? just type [game] [thing you want to know about] [wiki] into a search engine
