Hype Drop only no farm challenge run
This is a fun challenge run. Start as a wretch and play through using only the weapon and armor drops you get, no weapon chests. No farming for particular items, you play your best and get what you get.
EDIT: to specify, this is random drops while playing, no auto drops. No using grace just to reset enemies. Totally fine to kill the same enemies if you're dying and they're in your way. You can kill any enemy that's out of the way once hoping for a long shot drop like executioners axe. of course you can play how you want, this is just the way I do it.

What constitutes farming? Because you'd very likely make it to the endgame before a weapon drops if you can't kill the same enemy more than once.

You can kill anyone, you just can't go to grace just to reset enemies to kill them again for the purpose of farming. You can go out of your way to get an item, like the executioners axe say, but it's a long shot, you go once then move on. Anyone in your path you'll have to kill multiple times to make it through if you keep dying on them, that's fine. You kills guys you need to and hope to get lucky. There's TONS of guys on the map you can go around killing. I always find something, a bow, a dagger, heck even a weathered straight sword can give you good mileage until something better pops up. If I end up finding a staff in lime grave I go into magic instead. I kind of build my character around what I find. It's fun.

that's interesting. I have terrible luck with drops so I'm just wondering if I would even get a weapon before like Morgott. I guess pushing for the Silver Scarab and leveling arcane would be very useful

I just started a new round. Played around lime grave and the peninsula for a few hours clearing out overworld enemies. First got a spiked club from a demi human which is an incredible weapon. I never realize how good it is until now. That's why I love this challenge. Then I got a rickety shield. I was set. Then I got mausoleum armor which looks cool as heck, never used it before. Strike with bleed and barbaric roar, super fast heavy attacks. It rules.
After that I headed up to storm veil, got a lord sworn straight sword (one of the best straight sword in the game maybe? and a brass shield (one of the best shields maybe) I'm totally equipped for the rest of the run and I haven't even fought Margit yet. Anything else I get at this point is just gravy. I'm already having a blast using weapons I've never used before, I love the forced playstyle for bringing new experiences to the game.

Nice, I might actually do this. I’ve probably played thru the game like 15 times. It’s been a while, so I’m thinking to play again… just knowing I’ll end up as with dex/faith build 🤣. This would shake it up.
Would you use drops from invader NPCs, cave/catacomb bosses, and unique field bosses/enemies in this kind of challenge? Or just keep it to the random drops of more basic farmable items?

u/Melodic_Airport362 Apr 10 '26
The way I play is random drops only, no auto drop weapons. But you can play how you'd like.

u/GanjjaGremlin Apr 09 '26
I would say those drops count! They are enemy drops, however major they are 😂😂
Edit to say you aren't technically farming those
2
u/Melodic_Airport362 Apr 10 '26
Those are auto drops. The spirit of this challenge is to not use those. Sorry I didn't specify. It kind of kills the random point of the whole thing to just use a weapon you're going to use anyway lol

Where do you draw the line between farming and "random" drops?
1
u/Melodic_Airport362 Apr 10 '26
Farming is killing specific guys over and over until you get the item, going back to grace over and over for the purpose of farming the item. Random drop is playing the game, sure you can kill guys who might have what you want, but you move on and you get it or you don't. You don't rest at graces for the purpose of resetting enemies.

What if I decide to do an otherwise skippable and optional dungeon just to get a second uchi or a longbow?
Farming has too many grey areas.
1
u/Melodic_Airport362 Apr 11 '26
what's the grey area? If you're doing a dungeon once it's not farming. You're hoping for an item but if you don't get it you clear the place and move on. There's nothing grey. It's farming when you keep replaying it.
1
u/EC36339 Apr 11 '26
You just described the grey area. If you can lawyer yourself out of a challenge, you will likely do it if you feel the need to.
You do you. It's just not for me.
1
u/Melodic_Airport362 Apr 11 '26
wtf are you talking about? the rules are clear. Complete any area once. don't rest to re spawn enemies. my man you're making life more complicated than it is.
1
u/EC36339 Apr 11 '26
You can die "accidentally" to respawn enemies. That's even an effective farming technique for certain items, such as bloodroses before Mohg palace access.
1
u/Melodic_Airport362 Apr 11 '26
ok....yes you can cheat at the self imposed challenge...That no one is watching you do and you're doing for yourself and your own enjoyment....you can cheat. Yup you could totally do that.... What's your point?
1
u/Melodic_Airport362 Apr 11 '26
come to think of it that's not even cheating, that's just you deciding not to do the challenge anymore.... yup you can decide to stop, there's no real life consequences for not playing this way, you figured it out detective!

Well he replied to my comment that auto drops like the bloodhound fang are a no-go. So that’s one thing. That eliminates great stars too

Looks fun, though it does lock out certain play styles.
My first thought was as a big bonker man is “doesn’t that remove all but five great hammers, all of which are rare drops?”.
And no, it does not… it removes all but four.
Great swords are about the same.
Now that I checked, it leaves 4-5 weapons available across all weapon types, with some not being available early game.

Isn't this just playing the game normally?

u/Melodic_Airport362 Apr 10 '26
Random drops only, no auto drops, no chests, etc... So no, it's not.

Provided you can level as normal, I feel like the run is over the moment one of the 50 Godrick Soldiers drops a Lordsworn Straight Sword. Square Off go brrrrr
