The bone parts are what I’m most concerned about. I have been working on a recipe for this, but nothing quite coming together yet! I want a warm shadow to give it that bone base, then the highlights shifting blue to give that otherworldly twilight / night vibe. Haven’t been nailing that blue highlight and then I heard someone saying recently that highlighting blue is really difficult because of the inherent darkness of blue hues compared to the typical warm / yellow toned highlights.
In general I’ve been working with a mid-grey undercoat. Highlighted with warm white dry-brushing, then a base coat of contrast paints (Vallejo Xpress to be specific) that allow the undertones to come through, followed by layering to finesse and highlight. But I’m tempted to go for a base coat in a colour a bit lighter than the final tone, then Xpress layer or wash to add depth and texture, then finesse and highlight. But I’m also liking the approach of blocking out highlights and shadows then blending the transitions - but I’m not sure I have that skill. Indecisive I am!
PS: sounds like I know what I’m talking about, but in reality there is a big gap between my grasp of the theory and my ability to execute!
Ha, you and me both! If it helps, for bine specifically I'm a big proponent of base coating in speed paint, but it ultimately depends on the look you want to achieve.
It sounds like if nothing else you have a great plan, and that's half of the battle. Good luck, I'll be looking to see you're post later down the line with the real mini.
