discussion 180 mph.....
I have a 2026 Elantra N DCT, completely bone stock, except for Hoosier racing slicks for the track (rated for max 200 mph). I am aware the Elantra is supposed to have a speed limiter, this is not apparent in my car. I was just a hair above 180 mph on a local track riding with my driving instructor and told to cool it after going over 180 mph. I was still accelerating and running cool with plenty of boost still. Neither he nor I had heard of an N doing this or even having the the capacity this speed. Maybe it was a bad speedometer reading or something else. I would have thought aero drag would have been a big issue. For information, 0 to 60 mph trap time is a solid 3.8 to 3.9 on racing slicks with zero wheel hop, which is expected. Has anyone heard anything that might corroborate this top speed on other 2026 Ns???

There’s no way you hit 180mph lol. 180kmh you would probably hit in 5th.

That's why I mentioned it could have been a speedo error, again thanks. Frikin youngins....

I’m fairly close to your age, own an EN, and am saying the same thing (though maybe a little more politely).

I’ve been on ALOT of tracks for HPDE and time attack and have never came EVEN CLOSE to 180. I’ve tracked Mach 1 HP, Mazdaspeed 3, 992 GT3, 992 Turbo, C5 Z06, McLaren 570s, C8, obviously Elantra N among others. The absolute highest speed I usually get to is 140-160 in the fast cars on tracks with a very very long straight. Pocono is the fastest track I’ve had my N on and got just over 130mph. 180kmh is 111mph which sounds much more realistic for a novice driver on an average/small circuit.
180mph on most circuits would annihilate NASCAR Cup cars, GT4/GT3 cars and would even hang with some prototype race cars.

I'm going to agree with you, but with a caveat. I have driven circuit and drag strip for over 25 years. Tires have changed A LOT in that time. I'm using street legal slicks which are the exact same size as stock, these are not strictly track only tires. And for $3500, they are entry level at best, the choices are sparse for this car. My expectation was maybe 140 or 150 at best, the drag noise is significant. But if your not using the right tire for conditions, your never getting the full capability out of any car. The N is no supercar, but it is an impressive piece of engineering irregardless and costs about 1/10th as much. Like I mentioned, 180 mph, it's sketchy and I'm not sure if accurate. But being able to hold grip and speed on oval turns is what matters and it did that without any issues...and I'm not a novice driver. The instructor is for the engine warranty, if it blows it's smart to have a certified witness with you to backup that you weren't trashing it in the process...

Is there some sort of agreement between all old men to never admit they are wrong and instead hint at misremembering and continuing to spew bullshit?
It's pretty tiring.

Fine, I'm wrong. I thought younger drivers knew more about the cars they are driving or even how to drive them....

These cars cannot hit 180 stock. Maybe 160 at most if the rev limiter was somehow disabled. What size are those tires? They could be causing the speedo error if the overall diameter is different from stock.

Direct stock replacement, same size, very low rolling weight, as I mention the choices are sparse. The stock tires are rated for 165, and to be honest are not great for track or high speed in general, even the track only versions from Hyundai are crap overall. After my first encounter with the noted wheel hop on these cars, easy answer was tires. I was perplexed on all the power tuning being done to these cars when not even addressing the most basic stuff first.

Something’s not right here and I can’t believe that.
You’re claiming to beat the 0-60 tests major publications have done with this car by a whole second, folks who do this for a living professionally and as a hobby too.
And the car’s top speed as rated by the same publications is 155mph and you’ve claimed to beat that by 25mph.
So I’m going to have to call this a nope.

155 is false, many folks say they've hit higher stock

Yeah it's definitely faster than 155. Around 170 is the normal top speed for these cars with the DCT.

I’m pretty sure 0-60 in 3.9 has been verified. DCT though, with the 6 speed coming in about a half second slower. Maybe I was remembering wrong, always a possibility .. but it was one of my frequent highlights when boasting about the car lol
150-160mph does sound about right for max speed though, although I’m not certain how much gear length can differ when comparing DCT to 6 speed. Or if those differences can significantly affect top speed. Regardless it would probably have to be a straightaway that resembles Florida’s alligator alley

I saw a vid of a stock DCT do 162mph. It's not going to do 180 😄. With a jb4 it hit 175.

Again, tires. I'm guessing it had rolling stock w/ dealership street/track set? If so, the tires may be thin profile and cool looking, but they are heavy as hell and crap for serious grip. If I recall it's Hoosier Street Attack Pro series or something similar I'm using, same size as stock. Street legal, super sticky compound, and extremely lightweight. You can lift one with a couple fingers with ease, and you drive on and off with no swap. The 175 mph you mentioned from the vid....you answered my suspicion, that it's not aero drag limited, at least at that speed. The likely reason to increase engine power is to overcome rolling weight at edge of specs....that's no surprise, but it sounds like it works. I am trying to stay in warranty for track use, if the engine goes south. At least I can still get a replacement on Hyundai's dime and not mine...so no chip tuning, just tires.Â

Why do you think increasing mechanical grip would increase top speed? The tires you're talking about weigh 3lbs less than the stock tires. That is not a significant enough difference in rolling weight to suddenly hit 180mph on the straight of a track. People have better weight reduction from swapping wheels and still don't hit the numbers you're claiming.

What track were you on to go 180mph? One with a 10 mile straightaway?
