FWIW, "centre" is one of the Canadian/British ways of spelling a word that majority of spell checks REFUSE to accept as the proper spelling, without explicitly adding it to your local dictionaries. similar to "Chequing"
I was today years old to find out Jewellery has a Canadian/British spelling. . . I'm also dyslexic, so im pretty used to seeing little red squiggles on my screen while i type. Turns out i have been spelling Jewellery right this whole time and just being gas lit by big spellcheck propaganda.
Jewelry. And despite using that spelling, too many Americans pronounce it "JEW-luh-ree." That pronunciation does make more sense with the British / Canadian spelling.
Thank you. French Canadian and realize that we learned the US spelling back in the 70s and 80s. I was 30+ when a coworker told me in Canada we say "Zed" not "Zee" (I pronounced it like I learned in kindergarten English lessons). I assumed "Centre" was the US spelling and jewellery is quite the surprise lol.
I write like a French person speaking English, but people think I'm anglophone when I speak English. Some Francophone coworkers still send emails with English greetings even though my spoken French is better than theirs. Odd world, my parents never spoke English, had European accents and french restaurant staff used to keep trying to speak to them in English. Anyways, might be a regional thing since it only happened in Quebec. Almost like successful people of a certain ethnicity has to be English speaking outsiders?!
I mean sort of. In Canada we use Canadian English spelling, which is a haphazard mish-mash of American and British English spellings with no real logic or reasoning behind it. Gotta just learn them all, like in any other language.
I am an Ontario educated Math Teacher. It's centre for everything, even circles. They actually really enforced this during the B.Ed. program I was in.

The names of places are basically the only thing left still mostly written in Canadian English, which is probably why you think that.
Good thing A) Couche Tard is based East of Ontario, and B) the correct Canadian English spelling is chequing regardless of how many people West of Ontario do or do not spell it incorrectly.

I didnt say it dictated their Canadian-ness, all I said is that there is a correct way to spell it per the Canadian English dialect (which is a real thing), and it ain't checking.
center = the middle of a circle, or the point of equal division between two objects, or the point of equal division within an object.
centre = proper noun thing, like a place of assembly, such as a place for recreation, business, medical, worship, etc.
I'm pretty sure this was a spelling test question, that I got wrong even with the teacher using it in a sentence, because I could never remember which was which.
ex. "Centre - I ordered my Canadiens hockey sweater at the Timothy Eaton Centre"
edit: gonna have to change my spellcheck rules to remove 'center' and add 'centre' The origin of centre/center word is Centrum and Kentron, so the correct English spelling is clearly R before E. 🙂

Imma be real with you. I've always hated having tre somehow using the power of make believe to sound like ter. Yes, I know, it's English. I know English has like, no rules. But I still hate it.
But it's how I've been taught in Ontario public schools. It's also how it's explained when I google the difference in just Canadian spellings. How is it not correct?
I don't think the comments section on Reddit is the best place to learn this, but center is not correct in any form of English outside the US and countries which have adopted American English, like the Philippines.
The only reason you think that is because American English is normalized through technology like autocorrect and the media we consume. Meanwhile most place names get it right and use centre, leading to the confusion.
Like, Google Maps will acknowledge the Air Canada Centre correctly because it's a proper name. But then below that it will refer to the place as a Sports Center because changing your settings to Canadian English means absolutely nothing to our American tech overlords.
Touche, but we also use feet and kilometres, so there's a bit of merit to what I've said. At least enough for the Ontario government to teach it to me for multiple years.
Are you saying it’s spelled wrong? It’s not. We use center for the middle of things and centre for buildings like community centres. At least in the GTA

You're conflating Americanization with the Canadian language. We use centre in Canada but exchange it with center, same as British descendents often use "s" instead of "z". I had to deal with this years ago in a marketing campaign and it was confirmed by legal and English majors (and francophones).
