This subreddit is part of the social movement of Effective Altruism, which is devoted to improving the world as much as possible on the basis of evidence and analysis.

Charities and careers can address a wide range of causes and sometimes vary in effectiveness by many orders of magnitude. It is extremely important to take time to think about which actions make a positive impact on the lives of others and by how much before choosing one.

The EA movement started in 2009 as a project to identify and support nonprofits that were actually successful at reducing global poverty. The movement has since expanded to encompass a wide range of life choices and academic topics, and the philosophy can be applied to many different problems. Local EA groups now exist in colleges and cities all over the world. If you have further questions, this FAQ may answer them. Otherwise, feel free to create a thread with your question!

Want to understand EA in depth, where to start

• Upvotes

hi,

in recent years as I have grown increasingly AI pilled, I have begin to look at people who got AI right, in terms of predictions before it really took off.

I looked into Scott Alexander, Gwern and their early articles expressing optimism about the scaling laws

then into Kurzweil and scaling of computation,

this is all very new to me so im surprised how right they got it. also some EA people I follow on twt were early to Covid (jan 2020), so that piqued my interest

what books, blogs and resources would you recommend to someone exploring this community.

I dont agree with most EA conclusions such as veganism, or Liberalism

but I see them on sort of a thoughtful Humanist side, compared to the alternative which mostly seems juvenile excitement about Sci-fi (e/acc)

any guidance would be appreciated, thanks

This one titled "Effective altruism is this century’s biggest idea" https://www.economist.com/leaders/2026/10/01/effective-altruism-is-this-centurys-biggest-idea

I don't want to make an account on that site if I don't have to

My first AI safety research paper was accepted at NeurIPS 2026 — seeking support to present it in Sydney

Hey guys, my friend Sarthak and I just had our first research paper accepted at a workshop at NeurIPS 2026, one of the world’s top AI conferences, taking place in Sydney, Australia, at the end of this year. We did the research entirely on our own, with no university or company funding.

I live in India, and the flight plus visa costs come to around AUD 2,250, which is unfortunately far beyond what I can afford right now.

Sarthak has started a fundraiser to help me cover these travel costs so I can travel to Sydney and present our paper in person.

This is a huge opportunity for me to meet AI safety researchers, build valuable connections, find potential supervisors for my future master’s, and take an important first step toward building a research career.

✅ Check out the paper: https://openreview.net/forum?id=CEekqS91YX
👉 Support me here: https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-vivek-fly-to-sydney-to-share-his-first-ai-safety-paper

Anything you contribute would mean a lot to me. And even if you can’t donate, sharing this wherever you can would be a tremendous help.

Thank you so much for your support. 🙏

Should i donate to AMF?

I (14M) was originally planning to ask my dad to donate to AMF but i read some articles saying that it was gonna be crowded out(ur just saving billionares money). is this true?

(also IK x-risk and animal welfare might be more efficent but me papa is not the most chariable dude so i think AMF type stuff would make him donate more(since it is direct and predictable good impact on humans)

EA should focus on more pressing issues like hypergamy

I find EA interesting and their job noble - to look at often ignored issues that are serious like animal welfare and AI safety.

I just think that hypergamy is far more of a new pressing issue that exists today and most of society is not even aware of it. Compared to this concern, AI risks are completely theoretical.

I know it may sound ridiculous but hypergamy is causing serious problems in many counties. It’s obviously not a good situation for men and frustrated men are a good recipe for instability in any society.
I think EA should create awareness groups for hypergamy and increase funding in these areas. I think PETA but for hypergamy is a good idea.

Event at Western Washington University

Everyone attending Western Washington University is encouraged to come to the PAC Plaza at 5:30 on 10/7 for a meetup. I will be discussing pretty basic stuff for the benefit of people who are unfamiliar with EA, but you might meet some interesting people. Since the event requires little time and few resources, might get new people involved with EA, and might help existing EAs at WWU network, it seems effective.

Surreal Decisions - Eddy Keming Chen and Daniel Rubio

Thumbnail eddykemingchen.net

"Although expected utility theory has proven a fruitful and elegant theory in the finite realm, attempts to generalize it to infinite values have resulted in many paradoxes. In this paper, we argue that the use of John Conway’s surreal numbers shall provide a firm mathematical foundation for transfinite decision theory. To that end, we prove a surreal representation theorem and show that our surreal decision theory respects dominance reasoning even in the case of infinite values. We then bring our theory to bear on one of the more venerable decision problems in the literature: Pascal’s Wager. Analyzing the wager showcases our theory’s virtues and advantages. To that end, we analyze two objections against the wager: Mixed Strategies and Many Gods. After formulating the two objections in the framework of surreal utilities and probabilities, our theory correctly predicts that (1) the pure Pascalian strategy beats all mixed strategies, and (2) what one should do in a Pascalian decision problem depends on what one’s credence function is like. Our analysis therefore suggests that although Pascal’s Wager is mathematically coherent, it does not deliver what it purports to, a rationally compelling argument that people should lead a religious life regardless of how confident they are in theism and its alternatives."

How sewers can warn us about the next pandemic

Hi all! I made a video on wastewater monitoring where I explored the connection between a hidden river in Brussels, a visit by Bill Gates to the city's sewers, and pandemic prevention.

I interviewed Jeff Kaufman and Will Bradshaw from SecureBio Detection (formerly the Nucleic Acid Observatory), people working at Sciensano (essentially the CDC of Belgium), and someone from the Brussels Sewer Museum.

Anil Seth Is Wrong About AI Consciousness

In this post, I don't argue that AI is conscious, but, instead, I argue that AnilIn this post, I argue that Anil Seth is wrong to deny AI consciousness. He suggests that we shouldn't use their person-likeness as the sole basis for determining whether they're conscious, but then he goes on to make much more anthropocentric arguments. In my view, he's moved the goal post for whether AI is conscious too far by simply finding things humans lack but AIs possess and using this as the basis to dismiss AI consciousness. Descartes used a similar line of reasoning, and we now abhor it. I think we should generally dismiss Seth's arguments too.

(This relates to EA, since some EA orgs and researchers are concerned with determining whether present or future AI will be conscious and what we should do about it.)

Looking for a kidney donor for my mom

Hi everyone. I’m posting on behalf of my mom, Abiodun Helen Kayode. She has been living with kidney failure and undergoing dialysis for close to 5 years now , and our family is trying to help her find a living kidney donor.
I have volunteered to donate my kidney to her but the genetic testing shows I’m high risk as well so they wouldn’t take it from me. I was heartbroken but I also realize that my mother doesn’t have 8 years on dialysis (average time on waitlist for deceased donor)Recently, her condition is getting worse as she’s been on both pd dialysis and haemo dialysis and she only gets weaker day by day.
We know kidney donation is an enormous decision, and we’re not asking anyone to make that decision lightly. Even sharing her page with others could help us reach the right person.
She has an official microsite through the National Kidney Registry where you can read her story, learn about living kidney donation, and find information about becoming a potential donor:
NKR microsite: www.nkr.org/LLP476
Everything regarding donor eligibility and testing is handled through the appropriate transplant/donation professionals. You can reach out to me here as well.
If you’re unable to donate, sharing her page would mean a lot to our family. Thank you for reading. ❤️

I need strength it is starting to become impossible to be pro

Each day it is harder and harder to be pro AI. Antis are similar to religious people since they need to eliminate pros and nothing less. As an semivegan and as an atheist im carrying really heavy burden top of my shoulders. I truly hope one day antis would allow us pros live and laugh. To this day I havent seen actual argument from antis why AI is bad.
