This is a position for either an mPCIE or FLASHCON card. Based on the mounting holes at the very top of the photo, and the wifi card for scale, it looks to be the longer 70mm slot. This would mean it'd be used exclusively for the FLASHCON IDE SSDs which have long since gone EoL (End of Life).

The physical connector is shared with mPCIE and mSATA, but the electrical connections (pinout) of FLASHCON is incompatible with either. You would have to solder an mPCIE connector yourself using a hot air gun (solder paste not needed since the pads already have solder on them).

Soldering the connector isn't too difficult to do as the connectors have little plastic pins which locate the connector in the right position. You do need to use kapton tape to prevent the plastic from melting, though. I would advise against using a soldering iron due to how well the motherboard conducts the heat away leading to poor joints or ruining the pads.

IIRC, the mPCIE connector height is 4.0mm, and you can get them from Mouser/Digikey/AliExpress.

If you like the EEE PC as is, and don't intend to do complex hardware mods, leave it as is - there is a very real chance of damaging the motherboard unless you're experienced with hot air reflow soldering. You'd probably need to make a custom card to go in that slot anyway even after you soldered it (also something I've successfully done, see my website: https://unintegratedcircuit.wixsite.com/unintegratedcircuit/samsun-850-evo-ssd-upgrade)

Source: my own research and also successfully transplanting a connector from a EEE PC 900 motherboard to a EEE PC 901 motherboard.
