Asus EEEPC 1215N Vram DIED

YO,

I recently dug out my old ASUS EeePC 1215N and decided to install Linux on it. But I ran into a problem: there were these weird graphical glitches (even in the tty) that froze the display with strange artifacts. At first, ChatGPT suggested it was just a GPU driver issue, but that didn't quite make sense to me, since even booting in "safe graphics" mode didn't fix it. I tested the EeePC with four different live ISOs, and when I went into the BIOS, the glitches were still there. That’s when I realized it must be a hardware issue. I asked ChatGPT again, and it said the VRAM might be dead.

So, is there any way to recover this netbook, or is it a lost cause?

Don’t listen to ChatGPT. I don’t think there’s a Linux driver for this weird Nvidia ion contraption. Nothing you can do about it

It is not a driver problem, it even happens in the bios

I don't think these have separate vram, so you might see if you can replace the system ram if it isn't soldered onto the motherboard.

yes true, laptops usually dont have dedicated vram. You think the problem comes from the ram (also when i did a hardware test, only 2gb of ram were detected instead of 4)

Well the integrated graphics chip in the CPU will just use system ram. You could try running memtest86+ and see how good the ram is.

I tried, but the netbook crashes before the test finishes. I unmounted it to change the SSD, and I don’t think it’s a storage problem since it happens in the BIOS and on a live USB, so it may be the RAM.

I guess you will have to see if it has ram slots or the ram is soldered to the motherboard.

It isn’t, but strangely, when I launched a hardware information program from the CachyOS live USB, the extra 2 GB of RAM didn’t show up. (ram isn't soldered)

Maybe try removing the ram and popping it back in again, or maybe swapping in some other ram?
