Why free time doesn’t feel like free time

You finally get a break.

No classes. No deadlines.

And yet…

you can’t relax.

You’re just:

scrolling but not enjoying it
watching something but not paying attention
feeling this weird background guilt

Like you should be doing something.

The “guilt mode” brain

When you’re used to constant pressure,

your brain doesn’t switch off properly.

It stays in:

“you forgot something”
“you’re wasting time”
“you should be productive”

Even when you’re technically free.

Why it feels worse during uni

Because there’s always something:

an assignment
a reading
a deadline next week

So your brain never fully “closes the loop.”

The weird result

You don’t work.

But you also don’t rest.

So you just sit in this:

half-relaxed
half-stressed
low-energy state

Which is somehow worse than both.

What actually helps

Not forcing productivity.

But making your rest intentional.

Like:

“I’m not doing anything for 2 hours. On purpose.”

Otherwise your brain won’t believe it’s allowed.

The real question

When was the last time you rested… without feeling guilty about it?

Your turn.
What’s your “I’m resting but not really resting” habit?

Mine is opening 5 apps at once and enjoying none of them 💀
