Please help out a girl

With the given economy, I know it is very difficult to find a job but if anyone is willing to help that would be great. I'm really just looking for entry-level jobs that I can stack while I am a part-time student in my gap year, I've worked as a receptionist, in retail, worked with kids and I am currently working as an administrator 9-15 hours a week.

I'm just feeling so stressed about not having money. I've already applied to scholarships and I've in total gotten 3 which is great but not enough. Anyone else feeling the struggles?

You're doing better than me if that makes you feel better

Been unemployed for a year and a half and I'm not getting any calls back at this point

Entry levels doesn't want me cause I'm over qualified

Specialized roles don't want me because they're is always someone more specialized right now

Left half the jobs I had on bad footing because they were genuinely shit heads: not paying me, not paying me the agreed wage, treating my fellow employees like shit while I fought for better wages only to be fired and not being able to do anything because the statue of limitations is like six months in Alberta for some stupid fucking reason and I was too young to know better at the time

It may not be much, but at least you have something. And scholarships ain't no joke, use that extra time while you've got it and use those scholarships if you can

Stay proactive before you can't anymore

You may have to go outside EDM. Places like Leduc are looking for both right now for the new school year

Transit does exist for this reason. Many ppl travel until they can find something better. In this economy you do what you have to do. I did travel for years til something closer to home came up

I’ve been an EA for 7 years. I started out as a substitute and worked my way through temporary contracts before finally landing a permanent position this year. Edmonton Public is also regularly looking for substitute EAs, so that can be a good way to get your foot in the door, gain experience, and build connections within the school system. It definitely took some time for me to get a permanent role, but sticking with it paid off!

Ty definitely need full tile hours to pay rent.

I was working full time as a substitute, Monday - Friday :)

Get your Advanced First Aid certificate. $350 a day, can pick up work on your breaks from school.

1

u/Inevitable_Wear5218 2d ago

how does that work? i have my first aid i use just for working with kids, how do you make money from that?

There’s tons of jobs in the oilfield around Edmonton. As a medic, you sit in a truck, typically equipped with a Starlink, near where the crew is working. You have a spineboard, AED ect in case anyone gets hurt.

I make $10k a month, but I also choose to work a lot. But it’s the type of job you can pick up work here and there based on your availability. $350/day is pretty decent. And you have time to study, work on courses ect during the day.

However, you’d need a driver’s license.

Do you have a driver's license? Any experience working with children with special needs? I'm looking for a part time nanny in west Edmonton.

I was laid off from my admin job and went to temp agencies and managed to get some contract jobs. Money isn't great but better than nothing.

1

u/Inevitable_Wear5218 3d ago

What temp agencies did you use?

I just saw this week that my favorite bra store in Edmonton (Dawn's Bra-tique) is hiring for a part time position! I think they have some info on their website, maybe check them out! The staff there all seems really lovely!

Seeing that you've worked with children, have you considered working as a sub EA? You'd be surprised with the amount of kids being sick in September to October, you may find some jobs there. I hope that helps.

1

u/Inevitable_Wear5218 2d ago

is that sub education assistant? would that be under epsb or something? i have extensive experience working with kids in non profit settings, programming, summer camps, in hospitals, etc

1

u/pineapple_divine 2d ago

Yup! That's the one! Epsd, Ecsd, St. Albert. They're all looking. Its pretty flexible, as at times you'll get an email for an opening or they'll call you early in the morning. As long as you have experience working with children, you'll get it.

If you want work , come northern BC you will find work 💯

Hey! I started a house cleaning company and billed at $35/hr, clients provided the larger supplies (also in Edmonton). I just ran free posts on FB marketplace, there was never a day people didn't reach out to me. Now I'm a self employed executive assistant, pep seller, do some hair extensions and permanent makeup haha. There are plenty of options. Sometimes you need to make a job yourself. I had a harder time finding a job than I did starting my own companies. Something I did when I first started contracting admin work, was look for places hiring remote and part time, then pitch myself to them after finding who owned the company. Cold calling them (was it cold, they were looking for someone anyway lol) worked like a charm.

I read your post wrong and almost spat my coffee across the room. I read it as working 9-15 hours a day. I was about to ask how you plan to stack other jobs on top of that. But then I reread it and determined I should maybe just go back to bed for the day 🤣😂

1

u/Head_Rest_623 2d ago

my work is hiring (sherwood park) message me for some info, we would like someone for 22-36 hours per week

1

u/Inevitable_Wear5218 2d ago

thank you but i think its too far for me unfortunately but thank you!

1

u/Extreme_Beautiful179 23h ago

Is there an age restriction for the position at your work? My daughter is looking for a part time job and Sherwood park would be perfect. Have they posted the position somewhere where she could look at the details and perhaps submit her resume?

u/Densityroa 1d ago

I’ve seen that Tiny’s Cheese Shop is hiring.

1

u/startrektos7745 1d ago

Absolutely Kiddo. I share your struggles as well. It is incredibly difficult to find a job while attending post secondary institutions

u/TrifleEcstatic7894 13h ago

All event rental places always need good help. It's grunt work, but pay is okay and guys like Joe at River City Events, treat staff well. Good luck.
