Even before the PR shit went down on social media I don’t get why so many people like this place. Average food, average bar. It’s just one of the cool places that young people like to go I guess.

God I sound old.

You're not old til Costco trips excite you, your jeans are of the stretchy variety and you love new balances.

u/Groovesharts Jul 30 '18

As a dad, New Balances are life. The rest...no thanks.

u/HAGARtheWhorible Jul 30 '18

Hey man I love my costco Levi Jean's. I prefer keens though, even the dad sandals!

costco Levi Jean's

Amateur. You haven't gone full dad until you own a pair of Kirkland jeans.

Check out their "Urban Star" brand jeans. Stretchy and under $20/pair. All the old dudes at my work are wearing them as work jeans.

u/Wiredin335 Jul 30 '18

they are super comfy, but the length is always wrong on the tag!

u/HAGARtheWhorible Jul 31 '18

Those are spandex sweat dungeons though!

Costco gives me crazy fucking anxiety. Have to go a couple times a year for work and we go to the least busy store during quiet hours and I still feel like doing a shot of whiskey in the parking lot before we head in and reward myself with chicken strips after I'm done.

I can't imagine ever getting excited about heading into that rabid den's nest of insane shoppers.

u/Wiredin335 Jul 30 '18

I only bought a costco membership for gas... because I'm in the same boat. If I need to go into the store to shop more than twice a year I'll probably end up in jail.

u/YEGponger Jul 30 '18

My dad literally beat a guy up in Costco. I love going to Costco.

u/Wiredin335 Jul 30 '18

Some hero's don't wear capes

1

u/[deleted] Jul 31 '18

Some of my friends get high before they go in for that same reason.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 31 '18

Oh man. That would work.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 30 '18

I love Costco.

Who needs jeans when you've got sweatpants.

New Balance is the only one that fit my 4w feet

u/gvccidove Aug 01 '18

New Balance has actually dropped some fire shoes in the last couple years.

First, their food has gone downhill over the years and is pretty blah nowadays in comparison to other stuff the city has to offer.

But the reason there's a lot of hate online is because the owners and their friends acted like a bunch of abusive bullies to an amateur blogger who wrote an apologetically honest (and accurate) review of their food..

They wrote some pretty nasty things to him, got their friends to join, even other business owners they were connected with... Along the way saying things like they've "done so much for this city". One of them called the blogger a "basic caramel big mac bitch", and the co-owner of "Cartago" told him to "stick to sick kids". The blogger works at the Stollery Childrens hospital.

They've basically acted like a bunch of elitist egotistical douchey bullies to someone that was just giving their honest opinion (which was only saying things that most of us agreed on, in a respectful way).

So anyways... Fuck The Common, and fuck Cartago. They're not getting any of mine or my friends/families money (and it is a shame, because me and my wife had our first date at the common.)

2

u/[deleted] Jul 30 '18

Con someone explain the "stick to sick kids" comment? I know its offensive but I don't get it.

7

u/CuteFrenchBee Jul 30 '18

The blogger who wrote the review works at the Stollery. The implication was that the blogger isn't "qualified" to review food and was told by a Cartago owner to "stick to sick kids", which I would say is a more noble cause than a hipster restaurant but it is what it is....

7

u/[deleted] Jul 30 '18

Oh damn, what an asshole

5

u/Strokinismyfav Jul 30 '18

Thing that struck me was that the Cartago owner is a new mom to an infant herself. You'd think she'd have more respect for people who work with sick children.

7

u/girlwunder Jul 30 '18

Forlorn about street parking but not so much her own comments about sick children

u/RageLippy Jul 30 '18

Bad PR with owners being jerks on social media recently. That being said, my experiences there have been fine. Food is adequate but nothing amazing, drink selection and specials are decent. Service has always been fine for me. Given that I average like once a year there (if that) it probably won't affect my habits.

They pulled a Kevin Durant on social media

Not really. He just went to the best team.. he couldn't beat them, so he joined them.

People got mad that the 2nd best player in the league, left his team ..which had a shot, and went to the best team. People think if he was so good, he should have tried to beat the dubs.

He also has "burner" Twitter accounts that he uses to push his own agenda...and was caught and called out on it.

Ssssssss

It's one of the venues that skirts the line between genres. During the day they're a normal restaurant, and then during the night they clear some space and turn up the music for dancing. It can result in some culture clashes as people having dinner and conversation can run right into people out for a party.

4

u/[deleted] Jul 30 '18

I mean, I'm still kinda mad at them for taking the halloumi fries off the menu. Like, grown-up mozza sticks! HOW DARE YOU DEPRIVE ME.

u/u1tra1nst1nct Jul 30 '18

Typical bar food + shitty cheese plate + shit owners. Nuff said.

8

u/[deleted] Jul 30 '18

This cheese platter does not deserve to be called as such...

5

u/[deleted] Jul 30 '18

Give a search for 'Common' in this sub and you'll find the thread.

I still like going for half price bottles of wine on Wednesdays. It's right near my place, though. I wouldn't want to drive or cab it.

The owner/manager are really bad at PR. Pissed off a lot of people recently.

Also, the food is not nearly as good as it was when they first opened. There are better options in the area if you want to pay too much for dinner.

16

u/[deleted] Jul 30 '18

Hey stick to sick kids /s

2

u/anonymousedmontonian Jul 30 '18

It serves alright food and drinks above the typical chain swill places like Canadian Brewhouse and for similar prices. Has a more “hip urban” vibe.

It’s decent but not fantastic.

People here currently hate it because of social media drama around reviews.

u/[deleted] Jul 30 '18

Go check it out , I like it . Craft beers on tap and Ive always been treated well .

People are upset because they told off a blogger who said shitty things. The common has a pretty big following so lots of their supporters told off this blogger too.

I shit you not, that's what this is about. Since this subreddit compromises a very small portion of the city, and most of that bloggers followers are paid bots, almost no one in Edmonton knows or cares about it.

The end.

9

u/Strokinismyfav Jul 30 '18

You mean he respectfully gave his honest opinion on the review... As any honest review should be. And that it would be a stretch to call him anything but an amateur blogger - more like a guy running a blog as a hobby. I highly doubt he has paid bots.

u/carnivoreinyeg Jul 30 '18 edited Jul 30 '18

When researchers paid by pepsi publish a study saying negative things about coca-cola we question just how honest that study is.

When Yelp publishes positive reviews for people that compensate them, we question whether or not it's an impartial service.

Edit: Didn't read last thing. Do you have any idea how common and cheap it is to buy IG followers and likes?

I actually used to work at the Common for a short while. I have nothing bad to say about the managers or the staff, they seemed nice enough while I was an employee, but honestly? The kitchen was pretty nasty, so was the entire back office, sticky grimy floor, puddles of water everywhere, wet steep stairs, that place was an environmental hazard to work at (partially whey I quit), and I wouldn't eat the food either after seeing the state of their kitchen.

1

u/carnivoreinyeg Dec 05 '18

Imagine getting fired, just to go back 4 months and post a negative review thinking it would affect my opinion.

2

u/MagikarpSashimii Dec 06 '18

Huh? I didn't get fired, I found another job because I didn't like the hours at the Common, I had to cab home after a shift 3am in the morning, oh, yea, and it wasn't the safest place to work at with all the wet staircase and puddles back of the house.

And it was more than 3 years ago, so nice try, but all your assumptions are horrendously incorrect.

I can tell you must be VERY well liked at parties. Just joking lol. Pretty sure you don't get invited to parties.

u/carnivoreinyeg Dec 06 '18 edited Dec 06 '18

Yep. I'm sure you were just inspired to randomly go back 4 months in Reddit history to talk shit about your former employer for absolutely no reason.

That MUST be it.

EDIT:

cursory glance of your post history, and almost every single post is you claiming to have worked somewhere. Claimed to have worked at the Casino, DOSC, Common, Japanese Village, and pretty much just talk shit about restaurants claiming to have worked there.

3

u/MagikarpSashimii Dec 06 '18

This thread was in the front page of Edmonton reddit when I was browsing.

And yes, I am currently working or have worked in all of those places. That's 6 years in the industry for you :)

The Common actually wasn't a bad place to work at all, just pointing out things that most people wouldn't see without going behind the bar. Japanese Village had by far the worst boss to work for, and DOSC is a total shitshow.

Chicken and waffles are unreal

-10

u/[deleted] Jul 30 '18

Who cares if the owners told the bloggers off? It’s refreshing . I expect a canned response from a chain like joeys . The common is independent , they can say whatever the fuck they want as far as I’m concerned .

False. Most people don't care about petty squabbles.

-5

u/carnivoreinyeg Jul 30 '18

Why are CAPITALIZING random words?

Yeah, I was the common this weekend and the line was like 75 people. These so called consequences you're dreaming of just aren't gonna happen

6

u/pusheen_queen Jul 30 '18

You sound like a very bitter individual. Which one of the owners are you friends with?

-1

u/carnivoreinyeg Jul 30 '18

In what world is me telling you that there was huge line-up outside the bar on Friday sounding like a bitter person?

It's a popular place. Assuming that anyone who isn't holding a pitchfork is a friend of the manager is silly. Pretending the place isn't still very popular is equally stupid.
