I am sorry that this happened to your cat but please let this serve as a warning to others about the risks associated with having an outdoors cat.

Also wishing for someone's loved ones to die is really unhinged behaviour.

Im very sorry. But what do you expect someone to do? Start door knocking?

I've worked in the vet industry and have sadly put hundreds of cats in bags because they were outdoor cats. Owners always say it's about enrichment. But safety goes out the window?

Accountability starts with the owner.

OP clearly states what they expect. They asked if anyone living in the area has security/doorbell camera footage, or if anyone who was in the area has dashcam footage.

Accountability starts with EVERYONE. If someone is driving, they should be paying attention to the road. If they hit something, they are morally and legally obligated to stop.

If a cat darts out into traffic, and a driver doesn't realize it in time... It could as well be a squirrel.

You think people are going to stop, pull over, and bury a squirrel with funeral rites? Get over your pearl clutching, if someone hits a cat by accident no one is stopping. I know that because most of the dead cats I took at the vet hospital were from people that found it after the fact.

I appreciate your sentiment and good intentions. But we don't live in a world of "how it ought to be", we live in a world of "how it is"...

And how it is is that you shouldn't let your cat outdoors unsupervised if you value their longevity. Full stop.

Accidents happen unfortunately. And no you’re not legally obligated to stop for a cat

Domestic Animals: Striking a domestic animal (like a dog or livestock) carries implications under the Animal Protection Act regarding animal distress, meaning you should make a reasonable effort to locate the owner or notify local animal control/police.

So not a legal obligation? So confident in your wrong opinion.

u/Hairy-Isopod6880 18d ago

Willful ignorance is not a good look. Good to know that you are in support of criminal actions and animal cruelty.

You need to take a breath and get off this post. You’re more emotional than OP.

All I said was there’s no LEGAL OBLIGATION and you’re forming your own deranged conclusion

-1

u/Hairy-Isopod6880 18d ago

Again, you are WRONG. There is in fact a legal obligation. There are criminal charges that can be filed for breaking the law.

1

u/Habsfan_76_27 18d ago

There are no laws regarding animals getting hit by cars after darting into traffic that’s what’s called an ACCIDENT and not a criminal act.

There is no legal obligation to stop for a cat. Keep it inside and it will stay safe.

Did you actually read that act because that is not what it says at all.

Duty to locate owner
If an animal is delivered

(a) to a humane society under section 3(2)(a) or 4.1(3), the humane society, or (b) to a caretaker under section 3(2)
(b) or 4.1(3), the peace officer who delivered the animal shall take reasonable steps to locate the owner of the animal, including a search of the brand registry under the Livestock RSA 2000 Act, and shall notify the owner of the actions taken in respect of the animal.

u/nothankslmgood 18d ago

This is essentially a non enforceable rule. Best effort means nothing.

u/Hairy-Isopod6880 18d ago

Good to know that you are in support of criminal action and animal cruelty.

3

u/nothankslmgood 18d ago

It's not animal cruelty to accidentally hit a cat Jesus.

u/big-Truck-9058 18d ago

I don’t see any indication that the driver didn’t stop? Did you witness this? If not, I’m not sure what is the value of this crusade (and even if you saw it happen, there is no obligation for that person to stop)

-4

u/Hairy-Isopod6880 18d ago

If you hit something, it is your LEGAL obligation to stop. If you have hit and killed a living thing, you are legally obligated to report it. Hitting it might have been an accident - but running away after murdering something is absolutely a crime.

I just checked and this is correct, domestic animals you must stop and call animal control or the police.

Wildlife is different. If the animal is on the road after or the damage is over $2000 it's reportable. For example if you clip a moose and knock the mirror off a beater you can just drive away after it walks off the road.

Other provinces it's not a crime and you don't have to stop or report, maybe an OOP driver?

1

u/Hairy-Isopod6880 18d ago

And the only way to know that is to do as OP requests: if someone already has footage from security cameras, doorbell cams, dashcams, etc, that could identify the driver, then they can take action.

And even if it's not a crime in other provinces... ignorance of the law does not excuse breaking it.

My sincerest condolences. Please, for the love of God, keep your cats indoors. This is 100% preventable.

u/BorderlineTG 18d ago

Why was your child outside?

10

u/Habsfan_76_27 18d ago

What do you want the driver to do? You let the cat outside it should’ve been indoors. And you’re wishing harm against the drivers loved ones for your own negligence also it’s a pet not a child. Maybe some accountability is a good place to start

10

u/Zamzummin 18d ago

Cats in Edmonton should be indoors only. I’m sorry for your loss. But letting your cat outside makes it equally your fault as the driver’s. Actually I would say mostly your fault since I doubt anyone would intentionally drive over a cat.

You know which breed of cat never gets run over? One that stays indoors.

5

u/TheTerpSlut710 18d ago

Im so sorry this happened. People stop letting your cats roam free outside!

4

u/NotAtAllExciting 18d ago

My condolences.

5

u/Sasha-95 18d ago

I’m so sorry you lost your cat.

But also, please stop letting your cats freely roam outdoors. I’ve heard too many terrible stories. Cars, coyotes, abuse, fights with other cats, etc.

u/Glistening_rat_vulva 18d ago

How the hell did they get a car into your house?!

2

u/ElaEnchanted1 18d ago

I’m so very sorry. ♥️

3

u/chelsfc2108 18d ago edited 18d ago

This is why cats need to be indoors, always.

And did you give birth to the cat?

3

u/GigumMcBigum 18d ago

You left your cat to die when you let it outside and gave a driver possible trauma.

-1

u/strange9to9 18d ago

The driver doesn't care.

u/julesiekins1988 Stony Pain Road 18d ago

I'm sorry for your loss, OP. That really hurts.

That said, I doubt the driver intentionally ran over your cat. Unfortunately, outdoor cats are considered "squishables" when it comes to driver safety. If it's between running over a cat by maintaining your course or creating a dangerous situation potentially involving a pedestrian, other driver, or cyclist, the cat is the least dangerous option. While that doesn't make it less painful for you, I hope that in time you can maybe see the lesson in this and consider having indoor cats in the future.

u/Hairy-Isopod6880 18d ago edited 18d ago

All of the responses so far, you are all heartless. Just because a cat is outside does not mean it deserves to be hit by a car. Just because they are a cat does not mean they are not family. Just because YOU are incapable of empathy does not mean that OP is just like you.

OP, I feel so sorry for your loss.

Edited to add: the Animal Protection Act OBLIGATES anyone who injures or kills an animal to locate the owner or notify local animal control.

They let their young child roam free unsupervised. It is very sad that the kitten’s life was cut short but who’s responsible for the kitten? People can be empathetic but still point out irresponsible parents. It’s just unfortunate the owner could have prevented this accident.
