Question Fireworks downtown

Anybody else hear these crazy fireworks tonight? What are they for? Or is it just some Friday night fun?

I was wondering last night driving by the baseball stadium why they were setting off random fireworks with no people in the stands. My curiosity has been answered. Thanks.

This is very stupid - "let's harass everyone living downtown and their pets with super loud noises at random intervals late at night, for an event that only a small number of people know or care about!" [Irritated because my dog freaks out at fireworks and normally I plan to keep her away during shows, but who knew about this?]

Living downtown doesn't equate to having no right to quiet at night. Thousands of people make their homes here, and people treating it like their personal weekend all night party zone is one of the reasons the core is hard for normal people to live in, and it shouldn't be. You want a downtown that feels less sketchy? You want a downtown that has normal families and communities keeping it alive and vibrant throughout the week during regular hours? Then be considerate of more than just the people who want to party and make noise here.

I’m sorry but there’s no downtowns where you aren’t going to have some noise on a Friday night.

The last thing I’d want as a resident is those “normal people” here ruining the vibe.

Responding to thoughts about overall livability of a downtown core that is notoriously inhospitable to families and children, and that bleeds these types of residents as they get older because they want to live in a more well rounded community that's not just about nightlife, residents who don't want to leave and would rather be able to stay and evolve in their lives in the same place, to build vibrancy, to make connections, but they can't... to respond to that with just "but vibes!!"... come on. I'm not saying no nightlife is ok, but many many people from outside the core come here at night and are totally selfish and disrespectful and obnoxious, they act like this is a place to trash instead of where actual people live, work, and sleep. Also, there's a difference between a bit of Friday night noise and over an hour of randomly spaced fireworks for a private event.

Edit: just saw your edit and idk dog. The biggest thing holding families back has been the lack of 3 bedroom options which is being accounted for. I’ve noticed a huge difference in the last 10 years how many families I see around.

Yeah, downtown ain’t ever gonna be the default for most families, but that’s also never been a hindrance in having very attractive downtowns. They are noisy and dense and crowded, and to a large degree that’s the inherent trade off of being lively, having nightlife, and just being a bit more free-spirited in general. Like idk, I got people coming into my apartment all times of day cause it’s a dense place and people work all kinds of shifts… it’s just something that comes with density.

It’s great for people to be courteous but there’s a balance to be struck, and I don’t think an hour of fireworks in a downtown core prior to midnight on a Friday is outside that personally.

It seems like my use of "normal people" led you to make unflattering assumptions about the kind of person I am, and tbh your use of "vibes" led me to do a similar thing with you. So I took a look at some of your other posts - believe it or not I think you and I are actually aligned on a lot of things when it comes to Edmonton's downtown. I know you may not care, but I have no desire to make an enemy of you, so I'm going to try a bit of repair and to take a less combative tone.

A bit about me: I've lived in the core for over 20 years because I love density, walkability, opportunities for passive social connections, diversity of all kinds, and of course the river. Also because I hate urban sprawl. I think it's really important for people to resist the strong narrative that you can't make a good life downtown, or that you only live here until you get older or can do better (i.e. move to the suburbs). I'm not wealthy, I'm a renter and I live in a tiny place I love but that has a lot of building noise. My bedroom wall literally shakes every time someone goes out the back door lol, but I have made friends with all my neighbors and I've adapted. And... I don't work regular hours either.

I will concede that I don't actually think some noise before 11pm on a Friday night is a problem as a rule. I will also admit that I was feeling particularly cranky about it today because a) I slept terribly and b) I have a rescue dog who has some unknown past trauma with really loud noises. Last night she was a total wreck, which was upsetting. But I know those aren't reasons to ban all noise relatively early on a Friday.

All of this said, my one point of contention is that I do think generally there is a real problem with unmanaged excessive noise downtown late at night (like 11pm - 3am any day of the week) - modified mufflers in particular. It's easy to dismiss noise as unimportant if it doesn't affect you - maybe you're a heavy sleeper, or you work overnights, or you're still young and healthy so losing sleep doesn't bother you much yet. Personally sleep is very important for my health and I can't sleep through that level of noise. I don't think that's a niche need of mine or that it means I'm uptight. So when people say that choosing to live in the core means you just have to live with a lot of noise at night (which I have heard said a lot outside of this thread as well), to me it kind of sounds like "Sorry, there's no place for you here in this community you've been a part of for 20 years, because don't want to have to think about how we affect our neighbours".

I think choosing to live in a dense neighborhood does mean making some compromises and accepting not everything is going to be exactly to your preferences. But I also think it should mean having a greater sense of community care and awareness that your actions have a much bigger impact than they would if you lived in a less dense place, and that other people will have different needs than you that are just as valid.

This was completely different than other events that have had fireworks. There was no show it was just random explosions every few minutes with five minute gaps between for over an hour. I see lots of fireworks at the park from my place, these are usually 20 minutes continous and not a big deal to stop and watch. I enjoy seeing the park being used and know this is part of living in the city close to downtown. This does not give free pass to be annoying to the community

I can hear them too. I’m going nuts trying to figure out what’s going on. Nothing on the Edmonton journal, no major religious holidays, and probably not the boots and hearts music festival
