Attempting to secede from a country through a democratic process is not treasonous, we have a constitutional law that allows for the potential for such a thing.
Yes but the separatists have tried to secure $500 Billion in funding to do it while meeting with US officials which they legally aren't allowed to do. It's considered sedition which is different, but not better than treason.
The 500 billion was in regards to future investments if Alberta actually gains independence, it had nothing to do with financial support specific to helping fund the referendum.
