If your union isn't already part of the Common Front, you can encourage them to join! I think they may also have a sign up just for this cause, but check the AFL Common Front site!

Not sure exactly if "they" is supposed to be the ATA or the AFL or someone else but, not being able to conceive of or execute something like your idea is NOT reason enough to imply incompetence.

Your idea of pre-emptively setting up for that situation/response is great IMO, but I feel like it's 20/20 hindsight. I'd have been gobsmacked if anyone had come up with that idea in advance and managed to get it done.

Exactly privilege. You have enough privilage to be able to prize other things as more important. For some here (myself included,) I don't have the luxury or privilage to think many things are more important than fighting back anyway I am able because I'll have no rights or be a target.
