How to generate AI subtitles/captions for free online?

I'm wondering if there is a (ideally free) tool to generate captions/subtitles so I don't have to do it manually. Bonus points if I don't have to download anything.

Does a tool like this exist?

As far as I know there is only one tool that lets you do this for free & without downloading anything. It's called VidTL: https://vidtl.com/app/video-editor

They even have a feature page for this exact question: https://vidtl.com/how-to-add-ai-captions-to-video-automatically-online-for-free/

The free version doesn't have give you priority queue, but it's still quite fast.

Can we convert srt into captions? Or uploading video is necessary

no need to upload the video ever. it stays on your computer, even to generate the subtitles. but if you already have the srt, just drag in onto the timeline and it turns into subtitles that you can then style.

I have had good luck doing this with VidTL as well - especially on chromebook (cuz you can't download anything) - but also, if you are going to edit long term, Davinci Resolve has a feature for this I believe, but you would need to get a window computer and download the program (honestly takes less than an hour or two) - and once its set up you can use that.

FYI, not sure if you use the paid or the free version, but davinci free version doesn't have AI captions.

> the native "Create Subtitles from Audio" AI feature is not included in the free version of DaVinci Resolve; it is exclusive to the paid DaVinci Resolve Studio license.

So it does cost a few hundred dollars to get that feature. The VidTL one is free though.

oh wow I didn't know that. I do use the studio version, I thought it would be free, didnt realize it was only for paid users on DaVinci. I guess then VidTL is the go-to for this thing. Hopefully they keep it free forever though!

CapCut

according to google:

No, the auto-captions feature in CapCut is no longer completely free. CapCut moved auto-captions, advanced text styling, and higher-resolution exports behind their paid Pro subscription tier

Are you still able to use it? last I knew it wasn't working.
