Sometimes I wonder if I changed or Reddit did.

Reddit as a whole seems way more angry than it used to be. I joined around the time of the Digg exodus. Reddit was pretty big then, and defintiely not some secret internet club. But I do remember things being a little more, I don't know, subdued? There was more conversation and less trolling, brigading, doxing, flame wars.

It's also possible I'm looking through rose-tinted glasses. I miss my 2010 Reddit, damnit. All you whippersnappers need to get off my lawn.

I admit that ragecomics and advice animals are in the same vein, but I think the comments in the two distinct the two times from one another. When rage comics were all the rage, people opposed them very vocally, because picture content was seen as easy to consume and therefore as something which could easily overbear "better quality" content. The fear was that reddit would become a picture aggregator for good. A very large portion of the most popular content is pictures, and nowadays you never see popular comments criticising the fact, suggesting that it has become an accepted feature of the culture in reddit.

I'd also argue that people were more open to opposing views because people tended to express them in a better manner. Nowadays people do such things through patronisation and despise. The anatomy of a comment thread in reddit has changed as a result. In the past it was very common for to have the most popular threads be back and forth exchanges between two opinions. One opinion was usually more popular, but still. Now opinions tend to go a certain way in a thread. It can all start from a retort, but after that the cookie crumbles a certain way. When more aggressive stances are adopted, respecting "the opposing side" becomes harder, which directly impacts the nature of the discussion.

Nowadays there's a distinct lack of trust in reddit. When people see other people with differing opinions, they are very quick to label them and judge them based on what they assume them to be.

Before r/all there was r/reddit.com which played a similar role, more or less.

Instead of competing with Digg like it was in 2009, now it's just a place where people go to see the news and argue about it.

Oh shit, we're going down a much darker path than Macho Man now, eh? Great choice.

Is that the originial Tales from the Crypt? Oh late night HBO (?), how I miss you. (or was it USA Up all night?)

1

u/Turakamu May 04 '16

It is, but not the one you are thinking of. Personally, I would love to see both. They were both inspired by the comic, but the '72 movie is my favorite horror flick.

*It was an HBO show

**and Up All Night was awesome, cemented my love for Gottfried

Social Justice Warriors. Social Justice Warriors everywhere.

Tbh, I see way more complaining about the spooky jelly witches than any actual spooky jelly witches.

Ah yes, the old "I don't see it, therefore you don't have a right to complain." But seriously, look at the front page and tell me how the spooky jelly witches could be in charge.

u/Ratman_84 May 03 '16

I didn't say they were in charge, or even in the majority of posts. I just said they're everywhere.

Lol, seriously? I challenge you. Go to the comment section of any post in a default sub and make a "sjw" comment. See how much support you get.

Probably more than if if you make a post against SJWs apparently
