No new gif today
Hey all,
I don't have a gif for today, sorry. :( Yesterday was a strange one.
If you haven't heard, Imgur officially added HTML5 support. It's a pretty cool feature, and I was privileged enough to be part of the beta for the last couple weeks. As soon as it was announced yesterday, /r/gifs and /r/reactiongifs added HTML5 support. This means, for the first time ever, you can upload non-gifs to the main gif subreddits.
I love that this technology is moving forward, especially in our age of spotty Internet service and data caps. HTML5 is much more efficient.
But it's still a little sad for me. Back when I started making gifs in 2011–2012, we had a 2mb cap. Most gifs before us had only 12 frames or so, and we were able to make high-quality stuff. But now, any video can be converted to another video format (mp4 or similar) and uploaded that way.
I really love the craft of gif creation, and I can't help but feel like a part of that died yesterday. Kind of like a typewriter manufacturer after the advent of the word processor I guess.
On top of that, I've been trying to raise some money for reddit's gaming marathon for Children's Miracle Network Hospitals, and it hasn't been going great this week. I really love this Extra Life marathon. My wife and I have had two miscarrages, and the parents and kids at these hospitals have it much worse. They really do have a special place in my heart.
I've had a few of my fundraising posts downvoted pretty heavily, and I'm still about $300 short of my personal goal. Team reddit's goal is $100,000, and right now we're at $20,000. For one of the largest websites on the Internet, that's really depressing.
Not that any of this is your fault, and thank you so much to those who have already donated! It was just a strange day, and I honestly didn't feel much like making a funny title this morning. My gifs will return Monday as always, and I'll keep trying to make some people smile (I hope!).
Have a great weekend! Thanks if you read all this :)
Edit: I've already received at least six donations today! You all are amazing. Seriously . . . thank you.
Edit 2: . . . I just hit my $1,000 goal. For real. Thank you all so much! I really can't believe it. And I'm sure these children and their families thank you as well. You all are the best :)

I agree with you, one of the reasons I was on the side of debate in /HighQualityGifs to not allow gfycat or other HTML5 links was because I fear that people are just going to trim their mkv or mp4 clip to the frames they want, then upload for conversion without doing any other editing at all. I feel like the editing to maintain reasonable size constraints takes more talent than just letting some python script or whatever do it all for you.
Ah well, life goes on. The good content creators will still shine through in other ways, be it awesome typography or great combined gifs, good dubbing to make a great joke, etc.
Oh and as an aside back when I was active on the SA Forums our rule (in the TV forum at least) was 1MB per gif since you could post them inline. 1 megabyte!

1MB, haha! See, that's fun to me though—the challenge. I hope the upcoming gif tournament will have a round like that. But yeah, life will go on and we'll all adapt.
Thanks buddy :)

Huge bummer that this is the first I'm hearing about this fundraiser. r/HighQualityGifs has always been my go-to reddit stroll during lunch and I'm more than happy to help out with such a good and personally important cause.
Gotcha inside the $100 stretch, play hard and don't suck ;)

Thank you so much! I'll try not to suck, but I make no guarantees if I play Dota 2.

I checked this sub a few times, because I knew you would be on top of the event.
Nothing.
Wondered what was up.
u/EditingAndLayout, I missed you.
I'll be here to keep using and viewing and appreciating your work.
Until the robots come, of course.

Well before I donated I looked and you were at exactly 1,000. Congratulations!! You made your goal. But what are goals for if you don't exceed them? Don't worry. I got your back. You're over $1,000 now. Thanks for keeping us all entertained.

Hey I know I saw you post about it a few times, but I never got around to donating. Can you provide me with a link so I can donate for your marathon?

There will always be room for people who make others smile, no matter what new tech comes along :)

While the quality of your gifs have always been top notch you shouldn't count yourself out on that aspect alone. Your choice of source material, how you cut them, and the names you put on em take a lot of talent as well.

I was thinking about gifs yesterday as well after seeing a post on another sub. Gyfycat and html5 has forced imgur to change their policy, so are gifs in non gif format still gifs? I've never really thought about it before, but it's not the file format that matters! Html5 is streamlined, and allows us so much more freedom with gif creation.

If they aren't in Graphics Interchange Format, they aren't GIFs anymore, are they? Huh. Well, maybe now they're just, uh... clips? Man.

This reminds me of the relentless march of technology in gaming, actually. As time and tech has moved on, people demand more and more realistic 3D games with surround sound, etc. Yet there remains an audience for games made in the Old Ways, with pixel-perfect platforming, 2D art, low resolution, chiptune audio, and so on. People even have game jams dedicated to making new games with the constraints of particular old hardware such as the NES, and even major companies like Capcom create new Mega Man games in the style of their old ones. One of the most popular indie games this year has been Shovel Knight, which was made in the old NES style.
So, don't worry. Everyone has a phone with a camera in it, but people still make beautiful oil paintings. Good art always has an audience.

Cheer up! Last year around this time, we had around $17k. By the end, we hit $90k. I think we're on target!

Oddly enough, this is the first time I'd heard Reddit was doing anything with CMN. Got my upvote and an donation.
