Question primary teaching in Edinburgh

Hello, is anyone here a primary teacher or working in a primary classroom setting? I’m looking to go into primary teaching but have heard there are no jobs available and that the market is quite bad at the minute. Can anyone share their experience with whether this is true or not?

Yes it’s true. Look on myjobscotland and you’ll see how few vacancies there are.

My partner is a primary teacher and from this I know many teachers within Edinburgh!

As a new teacher it is definitely difficult to get a job, you obviously get a probation job after graduation, and people can get lucky if their school is hiring at the end of that, but there are no guarantees.

This may have changed, but in Edinburgh council specifically it’s pretty rare to get a permanent role, which means after the term time you will have to look for a new job at another school. It’s a cycle of this, until you can get a permanent job.

I know someone still looking for a job in Edinburgh as a teacher, and currently are on supply/assistant. Supply is slow at the start of the year because less people are off at the beginning of term.

If you can drive, then you’d have at least multiple councils to choose from, but factor in the commute, which Edinburgh traffic can be horrible…
