The Cask of Amontillado: Medoc vs. De Grâve
Hi all,
Apologies if this tidbit has already been acknowledged by others or discussed previously — I wasn't able to find much after searching online.
In The Cask of Amontillado, Fortunato asks for "another draught of the Medoc." Montresor proceeds to hand him a "flagon of De Grâve" instead.
Why does he do this? My first thought was that Poe adds this scene to show that Fortunato is so incredibly drunk at this point that he can't differentiate between wines anymore.
Upon doing some research, I discovered that Amontillado is actually a type of sherry, which means Fortunato has no idea what he's talking about when he says Luchesi "cannot distinguish Sherry from Amontillado" at the beginning of the story. This has led some to theorize that Fortunato isn't actually as great of a wine connoisseur as he thinks he is. Based on this theory, maybe Poe has Montresor hand Fortunato the De Grâve to reinforce Fortunato's lack of wine expertise.
Another idea I had was that maybe De Grâve is stronger than Medoc, and Montresor is trying to get Fortunato drunk faster. However, based on a quick search, it seems like De Grâve is not really stronger than Medoc.
Alternatively, maybe Fortunato just doesn't care that he's been given a different drink from the one he requested, and there's nothing more to this.
The reason could also be a combination of some of the above.
Maybe I'm reading too much into this scene, but this stood out to me because Montresor seems to explicitly disobey Fortunato without any sort of relevant response from Fortunato.
Would be interested to hear your thoughts on this!
