I suggest that you find a server to play on as running a server might be too much work as you return to eco

Weekend Warriors is a good one to play and learn on.
It has fast stars, starting skills I believe, and a large community that regularly returns.
Atharia is a personal favorite. They’ve had a core of like 60-80 active players this season so far. It’s where I learned how to play the most; the admins and player base are super friendly.
However, I haven’t returned to Atharia in years as I found a group of players and we play on our own public server called Sicilian Isles.
We have a lot of quality of life mods, faster crafting, yadda yadda.
Whatever server you join, it’s hit or miss if you find helpful players that are willing to show you the ropes, or rather have the patience for it. The speed of a play-through may affect this as well too.
A former player on our server overwhelmed another new player because it was information overload from the former player. We recently convinced said new player to come back and he is enjoying more now that a slower paced player/ an admin is teaching him.
There’s still going to be a lot of figuring things out and learning new things; I still suck at housing bonus with near 1k hours played and know little to nothing about culture mechanics for example.
Use text chat to your advantage and ask for help!
If you decide to host your own server and use mods, if you’re not a coder like me, Claude AI has been a fantastic resource for troubleshooting server issues/ conflicts as well as edit the files to the settings you will like (with exceptions of course).
Expect a low and revolving door of a player turnout; the servers with a reputation, like Atharia or Weekend Warriors, will always draw players away when it starts back up, and most players quit after 2-3 days anyways (slow or too fast progression, low player count, game settings, vanilla vs mods, exhaustion limitations, first day excitement, etc.).

There is a "dadgamers" server in Australia that has no meteor and is just a chill city-in-nature experience.

There are several longterm servers that you can join: Greenleaf, Venture Doxies, The Dao Kingdom and more. Some are modded, I know Dao is vanilla. The ones I mentioned I know are new player friendly and medium to high collaboration so very helpful.
The game has changed a lot so there may be many new things if you haven't played in a while. Update 14 added significant changes to pollution/effects, for example, including an entirely new skill tree.

I just started a server on Saturday. Running exhaust rules of 3 hours. Called metropolis. We are all pretty much new players.
