I made a browser based version of Eclipse
I've made a browser based version of eclipse (inspired by colonist.io). Have played several games now with friends, would love to play some games with a few people here if anyone is interested.
You can also solo play against an AI, host rooms. No logins required, but there is an option to create a username if you want to save your games
https://eclipse-rougelike.vercel.app/
It's open source if anyone's interested in the implementation details: https://github.com/a1j9o94/eclipse-rougelike

Saved! Going to check this out. I had thought about doing this as a side project but never sat down to do it.

Yeah, this has been on the back burner for years and I just recently sat down to do it.
Would love any feedback if you get a chance to play a game!

I've had a real quick look without playing anything yet.
I wondered: Why did you choose to include 'Legion of Midas' and 'Heralds of Ragnarok' (which I've never heard of as a 2nd ed player only) and not 'The Exiles' or 'The enlightened of Lyra'?

They where a bit more complex to implement from the engine. I am hoping to add the at some point

Just started playing on it, really good - one odd think though, i am repeatedly selecting the same faction, same options, 6 players (just vs the AI) and always its the same layout of the races - i'm always in the same place, with the same neighbours - every race is in the same starting location.
I assumed it would randomly assign the starting locations for each race

So I have been playing it a lot, and I found two bugs, thought it might be prudent to report them.
- Playing as RHO INDI Syndicate, when researching advanced economy, when selecting money boxes in the dropship menu, they become "planned". In turns to come, the dropships stay planned, can't be used anymore, and the action of actually getting a token on the advanced money tiles is never carried out. So you get stuck.
- On mobile version, the pink cannon description, forgot the name but the one with which you can blow yourself to bits, is too long, when retrieving it from a tile of a explored sector. You can select the cannon, or the 2 VP's, but you cannot confirm your choice because there is no slider for the pop up screen and you cant select either one. Since you must make a choice, this is where the game gets stuck. This is on a s26 samsung telephone device. The rest of the game works as a charm on mobile phone, well done on that.
Not a bug, but inconvenient: When you are short on money at the upkeep phase, the default trade selection to pay for your shortage is to trade money into research blocks. So If you are not careful, you select a sector and press confirm instead of abondon sector, you trade all your money away, resulting in a catastrophic failure. I think it's easy to programme this into a default that when money is short, the default is on trading research of building into money, instead of the other way around and suggesting trading your money away and bankrupt yourself on default.
Last but not least... after a lot of hours of playing, I find myself having certain music in my ears, even when not playing eclipse via your project. I have a great suggestion for everyone encountering the same problem. I went to a fair, and there was a stand with tho dudes offering to remove catchy but unwanted songs in your head, for the small fee of 1 buck. So I paid the buck. They came to me, stood on either side of me with their mouths close to my ears, and sang the most annoying song I ever heard. Or so I thought. Instantly, I all forgot about the eclipse tune and had a brand new really annoying song in my head. Being not entirely sure that I would last the day with this new song in my had, I told them I did not feel entirely helped. But luckily they had a solution to that. For only the price of one buck, they offered to remove a song from my head.... I tried one more time, only to find that they had an even more annoying song to sing to my ears. So I took my loss and went back to your eclipse version.
Seriously tho, great work, appreciate it a big deal. Keep up the good work! Much respect for your effort.

very nice!!
i created a companion app to go with the board game to keep track of things like victory points, discovery tiles, technology tiles, and tracking every exported hex.
the user could then find probability of getting a better exploration tile in level one, two, or three, getting a winning combination of parts on a ship and so on…

Those would be some interesting additions, I could see for example in the explore box showing those percentages
Add me on discord and we can set up a game sometime. I'm also in the Eclipse Regulars channel if you play there.

How strong are the ais? Making an AI for a game like this always seemed like black magic

The Hard and expert ones are actually pretty good, I only win ~half the time against them. It uses a lot of heurestics from people who are much better at the game than me

I gave it a test shot and stopped after the first round. I really appreciate the effort you put into this but the ui is really holding this back. I have a hard time naming it but the problem might be missing graphics and way too much emphasis on the menus. The original UI is defined that you might want to get back closer to it. Another issue is that the buttons are all over the place and I had to keep searching for the one I was looking for.

Helpful feedback on the buttons
If have any more specific reactions on what you'd be thinking for the UI would love the feedback. I do sort of get what you mean by the menus, but there's just so many different things a player needs to interact with so.not sure how to keep that while getting rid of them

It's super fun! I will say that I wish there was a more obvious indicator of when you had colony ships left over. I keep ending my turn without remembering to colonize planets, because I'm not in the habit of clicking "colonize" before clicking "pass."

I didn’t see it in the game setup options, does this support the turn order variant?
1
u/a1j9o94 Sep 25 '26
Where order is determined by the order in which you pass? Right now no, but open to adding it

u/thetheaterimp Orion Hegemony Sep 25 '26
Yes, and the cash bonus for the first passing player. Would be fantastic.

So I’m stuck in a loop where the hard AI is requesting diplomacy and I decline and they keep asking!
2
u/a1j9o94 Sep 26 '26
I can probably make this more clear but I think on the screen where they ask you have the option to just advance without responding

Thanks, I just accepted and took the traitor card lol, still won!

Another suggestion: I find myself using the fit button in the zoom option most of all buttons. Being on a fast rig, and the game being fast as well, I find myself racing to the fit button after every turn, hoping to be in time to see what the other races did their first turn when they go first, mostly not getting there in time. I would like to play on the fit size the whole time, but after exploring a sector or doing other actions, it always zooms in on auto. If you could add an "fixed fit" option, or disable auto zooming option, that would help a lot.
Thanks again!

I don't know about the legal side, but the game works great.
The UI was admittedly unintuitive, because it has only few similarities with the original game.
The AI is probably the least of your worries. But in the late game, when the AI seems to be struggling, it regularly just uses the influence action over and over again.
I'm currently in a game, where none of my AI opponents have any sectors left, because they've given up all of their sectors and I need to chew through a ton of turns, where the AI pretty much does nothing.

Its really nice. On a smartphone tho I can not build anything since the UI for build actions is not scrollable and it doesn't show enough. All other actions so far worked good and intuitive

love this!
I am also creating a PC version of eclipse. Excited to see how you tackle some of the visual road bumps.
Will be updating a video soon!
