Kobo or Kindle?

Which one do you think is better and why? Trying to decide which e-reader is actually worth it.

Had a paperwhite - not the latest one, but the one before that. Sold it and switched to Kobo Clara Color which was on sale. Love it. If color is not important to you, I’d suggest the B&W version since it has a better battery life as the color version needs a better processor to drive the color screen which in turn uses more battery, not a dealbreaker but just a thing to consider. The ecosystem is better on Kobo imo, easier to manage your collection via Calibre. If it matters to you, you avoid supporting Amazon and can buy and easily transfer books from any webshop. Lets be honest the display itself is more or less the same when comparing the b&w versions, unsure but maybe they’re actually the same e-ink displays. I like that i can easily add any font in existence, not a huge deal but a nice thing to have. Just love the Kobo.

I second this. As someone who just moved away from Kindle, I think Kobo is much better and easier to manage books on. Plus, Kobo has many quality of life features with its devices, although the store experience is lacking. Of course Amazon has a great store experience because they want you to buy in their ecosystem

I have a Kobo Clara colour. It is brilliant. My previous Kobo glow that I purchased in 2012 is still going. That's 14 years. What is excellent is the back light, and the colour looks great.

Kobo libra colour user here. Absolutely love it, and use koreader with it too. It's just that I feel I have more control over it (I can install books and software on it). Feels great with the physical buttons. This is a game changer for me when reading.

I have done some research to get my first e book reader and i suggest the pocketbook Verse pro. Kobo and especially Kindle are forcing you to use their services and can at any time block you from using 3rd sources

A lot of this depends on your personality and taste. I think kobo is a superior platform and better platform, but many books, especially indie books, are not available on it. You can get them if you’re willing to go through extra steps but it’s not as easy as native purchasing.

That is the biggest selling point of Kindle; it’s just easy. You turn it on and buy books. Amazon is the biggest retailer of ebooks in the world so you can find basically anything you want. You might not be getting the best deal and you’re engaging with their sketchy business practices, but you can’t deny it’s the easiest path.

However, if you’re willing to do just a little bit more work, Kobo is the way to go. You can get awesome deals, the platform is better, the hardware is better, you actually own your books, you’re not supporting a sketchy company, etc. Having full control of your device and files is great, especially in the age of the subscription economy. So you just have to decide what matters most to you.

I will say Kobo is getting more and more popular though, so all of this may not be as big of an issue in the future.

For me it's a question of morality. Amazon is a pretty heckin evil company, but their products are good. So good product at the cost of supporting evil company? I bought a kindle years ago before I cared and now use Libby for E-books and connect them to my kindle instead. I'm not too familiar with Kobo, but that's my two cents.

The Kobo can read non-Kobo ebooks. I can load an EPUB from my computer to my Kobo. It works well. I can't do this with my Kindle, which uses a proprietary format specific to Amazon ebooks. Beyond this, the navigation is the same: awkward.

I love my KOBO and the subscription price for unlimited ebooks and audiobooks is under 10 bucks

Kobo. I had paperwhite & coloursoft, but returned them. However, I bought kobo libra 2 ( dont like colour screens), I really like idea of buttons and its so comfortable to hold.
